(I perused the forums and didn't see anything like this)

Alright this has been bugging me for quite a while. I've never noticed how few people actually read books for fun in my school (and, to an extant, my city.) So recently I was taken aback when I saw how many people just don't like to read. Books and stories have always been a big part of my life and family, so I just naturally assumed it was like that with everyone.

So my question to everyone out there is this: What are some reasons people don't like to read?

... what?

I love reading. I think people don't read as much anymore because it's quicker and easier to get your entertainment from other means.

I really enjoy reading but in my town it's because people can't appreceat how much better they can be over movies (I know plenty of people who would rather wait for the movie and never touch the novel even if the film is just hollywood trash (not the film by jhon travolta I mean in general))

I only read Douglas Adams as far as novels go.

I think the main reason kids don't read is they either find it uncool or find it difficult. If a slow reader has to read an entire book its like a chore.

I love to read - at all the places I've worked, I was usually the only one that could be found reading while on break. It's weird... I guess everybody else just likes to talk with others while on break.

Oh. Gotcha. I probably would have understood that if I knew who Adams was. What genre is he?

Is reading fun? Double-plus yes. (Wow, and I didn't even like that book)

My 2 cents is that people just haven't found the right book yet. The books that are part of the curriculum in public schools are almost exclusively classics more than twenty years old, and they are selected for impact and influence, not readability.

As a result, people don't realize that books can be every bit as engaging and relevant as other forms of media.

Any time I have a friend who's big into games, but not reading, I always try to sell them on some video game adaptation. Blizzard's pretty good about commissioning books based on their video games, and I love books like Aspho Point (Gears of War) and Fall of Reach (Halo).

Once they read those, they're usually more willing to branch out. Heinlein, Terry Pratchett, etc. It's sorta like gateway literature.

We don't like it because we're trained not to like it. Schools insist on holding back students in the classics and only the classics, while books that speak to today's youth much better should be thrown into the mix to let them know that not everything reads like Nathaniel Hawthorne.
