Once they brought in the Captchas, I thought 'Oh, this is odd, but I'll play along'. And it was good (or at least alright). I understand that they have to make money somehow, but these new ones are Captchas that double as advertisements. Maybe it's me, but mixing advertising and Captchas seems a little gauche, as now you have to type in some slogan or text about an exciting new offer or what have you.

Is anyone else getting these, or am I just going insane? Also, what are your thoughts on them, if you've shared my experience?

The captchas have nothing to do with making money. It's because the site was becoming a target for spambots.

These ones are annoying though, they're barely readable 90% of the time.

I've seen some people getting them, though I've not yet myself. As far as I know the Escapist isn't actually making money on those, they just happen to be ads. Though I'm not sure, I am sure hat the moderation staff will be around to clarify what's going on soon enough though.

Yeah apparently its to cut down on "spam"

I have never seen spam in my year on the escapist.

"The capatabb"

i dont know exactly how they work, but they do make money off them.

my friend ran a blog for a while with one, and he would receive 20 cents per.
there are also people who have jobs to just enter them, to allow spambots to continue..spamming.
again, no idea how they actually work, someone explained it once on 4chan, but i don't remember.

isn't the whole reason we register to post on the site, to combat spam? why make us do Captchas too? i admit, its a minor inconvenience but after every other post it's annoying.

do what youtube does, if you post like 5 times in a certain amount of time, they hit you with them.

Everyone's getting them. PubClub people are getting less, but they're still getting them.

Its to help curb bot-spam. That being said, I believe a simple captcha at signup would adequately serve that purpose. Although perhaps the current way is to help block bots that hack accounts or something.

Well, it was only a matter of time before the spambots got here. It only takes 5 seconds for me to complete the captchas.

After reading comments now I get to decide if my thoughts are worth the effort of trying to decode the smushed up letters. Usually they're not. It appears I will become more of a lurker.

I preferred the regular Re-Captcha's. They at least had purpose.

I have to say that i'm ok with it using Captchas (only if they are 4 numbers or letters) but putting advertisements in them now that is a little dauche

Really? I though PubClubbers didn't get them because the subscription basically overrides whether you're a spambot. :/

OT: I still have only a vauge idea what the hell is going on and had to Google 'Captchas' to find out what everyone is complaining about.
Safe to say, I haven't come across them yet.

Looks like they fixed the captchas. We can read them without bleeding from the eyes now. Thanks, Escapist!

From the way Virgil described it, it seems you'd get it very rarely if your a pubclub member. Although he may have been using sarcasm. So hard to tell over the internet.
