Reasons to get a Vita other than Soul Sacrifice?

So... I'm kind of poor at the moment, but have at least enough to consider getting at least one of the two Current-Gen handhelds... Soul Sacrifice has me seriously considering a Vita, but so far, I'm reeeeeally not seeing much else to play on the damn thing. I could download old PSP games on it as well, but my old PSP works just fine. Besides Soul Sacrifice the only games causing any significant want are Persona 4: The Golden and Gravity Rush... The 3DS on the other hand frequently sells for a 100 dollars on Craigslist around here, has an entire library of DS games I haven't had a chance to play (including 3 Shin Megami Tensei games!) a new-ish Monster Hunter, (and another on the way) Souls Hackers, and both Shin Megami Tensei 4 and Pokemon X and Y are upcoming.

Am I missing something? Is there a vast pile of awesome PSV games I just haven't heard of? Something to justify paying more than double what I would have to for a used 3DS? If you have some evidence to convince me with, feel free.

On the other hand, isn't the fact that I need a specific piece of technology to play this game kind of stupid? The idea of consoles and console-locked games is really starting to bug me... I already have multiple machines that could run this game. I kind of want to use those.

Well, I have both and as much as my sony fangirl heart hates to say it, I'd go with the 3DS if I were you. Now don't get me wrong, I love my vita, I love the potential it has... but as of this moment I have the following games for it: Uncharted (cause I loves me some Drake adventure time), Gravity Rush, Persona, and thanks to playstation plus free downloads of Disgaea 3 and plants vs zombies. I also have some download only titles on there (that I could also put on my PSP) being the corpse party games and Unchained Blades. It makes me sad that I have so little to look forward to release wise for my vita...

The 3DS, on the other hand, has a much stronger library and in comparison has a lot more coming out... and I'm basing this on the types of games you mentioned being excited for (which incidentally are my favorite types as well). There's always the option of waiting on the vita until it's more affordable and, hopefully, has a plethora of great games to choose from. That's what I did with the PSP. I got mine about two years ago and laughed maniacally as I raked in the RPGs at rock bottom prices.

The Vita is quite an investment, I have no idea what Soul Sacrifice is so I wont comment but I can give some general advice on the Vita. If you have a PS3 and do not mind a one off fee of £40 PS+ is amazing, it applies to the PS3 and the Vita and you get free games and not crap ones either. Many of the Vitas AAA titles have been on it and the same on the PS3, they have Hitman absolution up there along with others and Uncharted: Golden Abyss is on the Vita.

If you are on a budget that £40 will let you play hundreds of pounds worth of games, better still you get discounts on the PSN store too. If you do not have a PS3 you get much less value but it maybe worth considering for the Vita alone.

As for the Vita itself, the memory cards are overpriced and too small. No way around that unfortunately and it makes having loads of digital titles inconvenient, you have to keep backing the memory up and wiping and reinstalling over and over if you want to keep your games and the saves.

Battery life is OK but its not great, adequate is probably the best word. The screen is gorgeous, the 3DS screen is antiquated and you can see the difference in the Vitas screen. Games and movies look great and you have a modern capacitive full multi touch touch screen, no need for styluses (finger marks though -rage-). Its great for watching movies too with its largish screen, if you don't have a smartphone with a large screen and watch movies it might be the device for you as its slightly more portable than a tablet although the tablet has more uses. Apps are limited, the browser was horrible at launch buts its fixed, you have standard YouTube apps and so on but you don't have access to huge software libraries like a tablet would. Its limited to the PSN store only, there is a growing library of sub £10 indie games though.

Indie games on the Vita are great and there are some fun and creative titles around, AAA games are kinda slow at the moment hopefully that will change. Sony might be planning to make another push with the Vita when the PS4 launches because they are promising all kinds if integration and features.

As for the cost of the Vita, it costs more simply because it costs more to build. OLED screens and highish end quad core mobile CPUs and GPUs do not come cheap, it had the same kind of hardware as high end Smartphones and tablets and devices like the iPad 2 and Samsung Galaxy S3/S4 and you can see the price of those.

Still its an investment into a handheld that might be a footnote and another device crushed by Nintendo, depends how it pans out. If you want a mutli media device with a gaming focus it might be worth it for you, I don't know if the 3Ds is more suited to your needs though.

If you live in america i'd definitely go with the 3ds. In europe the decision would be closer thanks to us getting the games much later.

One of the Vita games i had the most fun with so far was Ragnarok Odyssey.
