I was just curious if any other escapist-poster would identify as a rebel and a loner. I feel this term has been romanticized and deflated in the modern era when social networking distills expression down to its base elements. I've never been one to derive a sense of pride out of what school I go to or what dumb subculture I've been shoehorned into. It could just be that I spent a long time struggling with my identity, and what it means to be true to oneself.

I would like to know what this personally trait looks like to anyone else, and not on a simply superficial level.

Aren't rebels and loners two completely different things? A rebel is someone who rebels (usually against authority of any kind), and a loner is just someone who doesn't make any friends. That's what those terms mean where I come from, anyway.

And no, I don't think I'm either of those things.

From your avatar, one would've thought you were a gentleman among sharks...

OT: I'm a loner, but not a rebel. But it depends on your definition of rebel/rebellious and what associated labels are applicable (societal conformity/literal/emotional etc.)

I'd probably say I'm a loner. I mistrust people, and I don't really make friends outside of the few I already have because as a general rule, people = shit.

Guess the term 'loner' could of been applied to my in high school. I mean I had friends but mostly in other schools so I spent my time in the school gym or library at lunch breaks and that. Funnily enough, it seemed to make people WANT to try and be my friend but I viewed most of them as popularity grabbing vampires looking for followers.

As for rebel, not really. I did stuff that would of gotten me into trouble sometimes but nothing extreme of often yet for those few things I was branded 'trouble-maker' to adults and teachers and a 'bad-boy hero- to others my age.

So in conclusion, aye, those terms are exteremly shallow and superficial.

I am a loner, though not really a rebel. While I have two friends, one of them my girlfriend, they are a grade below me, and thus, starting this year, in another building. Everyone in MY grade hates me because I used to be hyperannoying up 'till about last year and I got control of my aspergers syndrome. Not that I really care. Most of them are idiots and I'm glad I've been "cut off" from them, so to speak, so I wasn't made into an idiot....maybe I am a rebel.
You're a fellow Aspergers syndromer? I never knew that, interesting...

OT: I used to be loner, because like DED I annoyed most people in my year and so only had a few friends, however in the last couple of years I've learned to socialise properly and now I've had a fresh start at uni I have many friends! I've never really been the rebelious type though, it's in my nature to go along with rules as long as I feel they are just.

I've been known to stand against the occasional tyrannical dictatorship and lead a revolution with an army of rag tag peasants to the gates of the palace.

...

Anyway, More of a Loner than anything else. Prefer my own company and that of my PC / Xbox. They don't come with the disease of being human and thus no emotions or neediness.

Rebel:
You better have a good reason to behave that way, otherwise you're not just obnoxious, you're pretentious as well. It's a commendable thing to stand up against a gross injustice of any kind, but the 'rebel without a cause' thing makes me want to slap people silly.

Loner:
I certainly won't tell those folks how to live their lives, but I do judge being a loner as unwise (if consciously chosen). Like it or not, life is about connections, about interpersonal relationships of all stripes, and if you choose to abstain from having any kind of social life you're depriving yourself of an insane amount of opportunities.

As for me... I've successfully rebelled against unfair behaviour from authority figures (on behalf of others) a few times, but by and large I'm not a rebellious person and rather value rules and laws. Regarding the loner thing, that doesn't really apply either; I rarely ran with the popular crowd, but I do enjoy company and always actively sought out contact with others.

I've often found loners are just people who haven't found someone they like yet. I was pretty lonely in high school for a while until I met a chap who introduced me to Warhammer 40K. I mean I still like my own company, but I can't say I'm a loner anymore.

As for rebels... is it for the sake of being a rebel or for a real cause? If it's the latter then I'm all on board!

I'm a loner in the sense that I don't particularly like most people and don't engage in many social events and the ones I do engage in have a large degree of anonymity. Loners don't mind being alone and generally hate being the center of attention.

If you feel drained after you have to go to social events, more so than after work or something, you might be a loner. If you have few friends, and are completely fine with that, you might be a loner.

My definition of loner is someone who is isolated by choice, not because people forced them out. It's not just certain traits you have, it's why you seem to have them and how you react to the consequences. The difference between a loner and a loser is the loser desperately wants to be accepted. The loner couldn't care less about the thoughts of the community as a whole, though there are always a few peoples opinions you care about.

Of course, these are all just my own ideas, largely based off myself and I speak with no authority beyond that.

A mixture, a reboner if you will. A lone wolf. A king of lone wolves, because the wolves are lone thus making me the only member of the monarchy I've just associated myself with. I give up.

I have low level Asperger's syndrome, and up until very recently I had very few good friends, none of whom I trusted.
About six months ago, I decided I wasn't happy with this, and since then I've focused on learning to be more confident in social situations, with some effect.

Loner - yes, a little, but I'm getting better.
Rebel - depends on your definition of the word, I don't go around vandalizing stuff or making life difficult for others. On the other hand, I despise British culture, go to the occasional protest, and take my fair share of drugs.

I guess I'm a bit of both. I dislike most people, but have a few wonderful friends. I was a lonely kid too so, I guess I'm used to it.

Wouldn't call myself a rebel, but a loner, yea, sounds right. Have a couple friends that i hang out with at school, once in a while outside of it as well. But i don't feel the need to have lots of friends/know people/be known. I consider myself pretty anti-social in general.
