Reboots you actually want?

It seems we, the gaming community, and indeed the nerd community in general, are often heard wailing and gnashing our teeth at the constant reboots and reimagining of our favourite games and other media... but occasionally I find that there are games that I actually want to see rebooted.

Oh I don't mean where they 'reimagine' a strategy game into a FPS, I mean like the recent XCOM reboot, where the core of the game is kept, but advanced to the modern day.

Take for example Sid Meier's Pirates! (the ! is important), one of the greatest games of all time, still fun after all these years, but just sitting there begging for a reboot.

Am I alone in my desire to see some older games reborn for a new era?

Pirates! already had a reboot.

Pirates! 1987

Pirates! 2004

I would love to see Blood redone, or a sequel even, something with it. Quarantine would also be nice to see again.

System Shock 2.

Or rather, I'd like a proper remake. One with current gen graphics (rather than just updated textures like the Halo remake) as well as better physics, but otherwise completely unchanged.

The game is still brilliant in terms of game-play, but the extremely dated graphics detract from the dark atmosphere of the title. Not to mention that it can be a pain to get working on a modern PC.

Homeworld - I would love this series reborn, SoSE does a decent job but nothing has filled this gap since HW2 back in 2003, hell I still fire it up now and play, personally feel its look still holds up well. Hell I had to go play HW2 after watching the anime Heroic Age recently just cos of the huge space battles.

This.

Wild Arms- one of the only series' where I would want the reboot to be darker and gritter than the original.

Burnout.
That franchise has completely crashed this gen. Paradise was lame for omitting the Crash Junctions (probably the most interesting part of the franchise) and then they made a game of just crash junctions but it's like something I would play on my phone.

Phantasy Star.
Not, PSO but Phantasy Star. It would be cool to see that rebooted into a modern rpg like Fallout 3 or something.
I always got the feeling that there was so much more detail to those worlds than what we didn't see in the 8-16bit game.

THIS! Although, do you think they would redesign characters in that case? Because I can not imagine redesigned Raziel.

Also Dino Crisis. I mean come on, we have so much Resident Evils, time to give us more Dino Crisis!

Zelda. All the lore is just piling up way too high and it's really confusing now. I just want a game where Zelda gets kidnapped by Ganon and Link has to go through a sequence of dungeons collecting nifty items en route to saving her.

I can't imagine a redesigned Raziel either. However, a re designed Kain that doesn't look like a cauliflower I'm totally on board for.

OT: Might and Magic! The first person party based RPG is seriously lacking these days. I mean, there was Grimrock, but tbh I'd rather just go back and play 2D sprite M&M games. Which I am doing, although I'm sad to report despite previous assertions, 'The Mandate of Heaven' only says 'The Mandate of Heaven' twice in the opening sequence, or 4 times if you count the name appearing in writing.

I had that as a little kid and couldn't figure out what to do. About a month ago I found a complete copy at an independent retailer and yes...I very much want more of this series.

---

Dino Crisis, Medieval, Legacy of Kain/ Soul Reaver/ Blood Omen, Road Rash, Comix Zone, Battle Toads, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (or just a third one), Zombies Ate My Neighbors!, Smash TV, Adventure Island, Colony Wars, Gambare Goemon! (Legend of the Mystic Ninja), Burnout...I'm sure there are others.

TIE FIGHTER

For goodness' sake, how is such a universally praised game not top of the list for getting some much needed next gen love? imagine coupling gameplay of that depth (hell, you could make it even deeper with advances in AI) with graphics that don't make your eyes bleed, voice acting that wasn't recorded on a broom and a truly branching story line. Imagine a custom character you can walk around the mission hub, like an beautiful cross of Wing Commander and Mass Effect.

And finally, imagine the thrill of being a badass Imperial death dealer all over again. Imagine the satisfaction of outmanoeuvring a couple of thousands of polygons of HD A-Wing in an equally beautiful TIE Defender, then watching in glee as your realistic light source laser cannons obliterate the Rebel scum in a dynamically lit explosion...

Heaven.

...Don't you do that anyway? You can ignore the lore of Zelda games for the most part.

OT: OGRE BATTLE. Let me say it again, OGRE BATTLE.

I've only made 1 exception to the "never preorder" rule...and that was for Xenoblade. I would break it again in a heartbeat for a new Ogre Battle game.

Tomb Raider, for real this time.
i doubt the style the original style will ever be done again to a mass market.

maybe as an indie title.

the original TR was made a maze and confusing puzzles to lengthen the game considerably as most games were in those days.
difficulty made the illusion of complexity and length.

there are still games from the NES era i have never beaten.
others using emulators they are far shorter when you have enabled cheats and hacks to become invincible or infinite lives or something.

the newest reboot. is what people want these days and as along term series fan i enjoyed the reboot.

Knights of the Old Republic (Single player, obviously). I wouldn't mind either a remake of the original with a new combat system, or just a part 3 or prequel or whatever, but with the same quality of story, characters and locales.

And Transport Tycoon. As much as I appreciate Open TTD, it'd be nice to bump this game 20 years into the future when it comes to graphical fidelity. Unless that would compromise the deepness of the game mechanics, in that case I'll keep playing OTTD, which I can seriously recommend to anyone, it's free :)
