My film major friend needs help writing an essay about recent big-name movies with bad special effects, and a great story. Any takers?

Silence of the Lambs. Dunno if that's recent enough, but it's the first thing that came to mind.

Alice in Wonderland, dunno about the special effects since most of the movie was CGI, but the editing was a hatchet job.

Thought about it for a bit, and WOW, good movies with bad special effects are surprisingly hard to come by these days, probably because:

a) "Special Effects Based" Movies either invest lots of money into CGI and/or have bad storys anyways

b) ESPECIALLY 2009 showed with District 9 and Moon that you can create good special effects even on a "low" budget these days.

c) If a movie does not focus on special effects, chances are you won't even notice

That said, if it's recent enough, Donnie Darko had pretty bad computer effects and a very good story.
V for Vendetta has a kinda good story if you don't know the original graphic novel, and doesn't really shine with good effects, however, one of many occasions where i would argue that it's definitely "good enough".
And while i wouldn't say for myself that these movies had good stories, some people liked the plots of "I Am Legend" (what a piece of shit) and the Ang Lee Version of "Hulk" (bored and confused), both of wich had pretty bad effects.

I don't know about bad SE, but how about non-existent?

For that you could pick any indie movie really - Once for example.

Or you could just pick any Uwe Bole movie.

I'm not sure it counts as big name but Powder Blue comes to mind. IMO it was one of Forest Whitakers best roles to date and special effects were.. included in some small way.

I won't mention the OTHER reason to watch it since you asked about special effects, heh.

Just came up with another arguable example:

Serenity has a GREAT story (even if you don't know Firefly), and the special effects are mostly good, but then there is the hovercraft chase, wich looks incredibly cheap and fake...

Define recent?

Anywho, I'm going with The Haunting of Winchester House. Of course, everything about that movie was an abomination against humanity.

That sounds like a pretty pointless argument your friend is trying to bolster. It seems to be based solely on opinion. You could tell me you think the effects in district 9 were bad I could think they looked good. I think your friend needs a new topic IMO. Regardless alice in the wonderland was definitely a good case of this.

Bad effects but good story... that's a tough question. Good effects but bad story, that's not too hard. I'm sure there's some straight-to-video crap out there that fits the bill of bad effects, but good story? Not sure. Send your friend down to the video store, ask a clerk.

I thought they were pretty good apart from Professor X's appearence at the end. He looked like a scary demon posing as the bald wonder ready to wisk everyone away to kill them.

I Am Legend was a great story with horrifically bad special effects.

Bald men with underbites and thyroid problems are scary? Yeah fail.
