Rant time:
I fucking hate job hunting in the UK during this unemployment crisis. I came out of university in 2010 and after 7 months managed to get a shitty minimum wage part-time admin job.

Naturally I'm still trying to look for proper work but every job that isn't some soul destoying sales bullshit or cold calling wankery has requirements that are unattainable without a highly specialized degree or years of experience.

Even positions that advertise as "trainee" jobs say you need this, this and this highly fucking specialized skill. "Trainee IT twat: You must know this, this and this programming language, have 2 years web development experience". Well then that's not a fucking trainee position then is it?!

There's plenty of jobs and careers out there I'd be happy to do but I can't because I don't have a fucking peice of paper to say I can do it.

Specialization has gone to a ridiculous extreme now that employers relative barginning power has skyrocketed with the recession. Don't like it Mr.Un/Underemployed? Well you can go suck eggs because we have 1000 other jobless who are better qualified.

And looking at these online job sites really tells you how hopeless it is. Medicore jobs that went up just yesterday with 77 applications?! 76 of whom are probably better qualified than me. What a crock of shit.

Maybe I should role up to a City bank and ask them to compensate me for all the lost money and employment opportunities?

Is the same way here in the states. Can't even get an interview. Soon are going to need a college degree to work in fast food.

i'm having the same problem, my contract at where i work runs out soon and i don't know yet if they're going to keep me on (long story but i doubt they will) so i'm looking for jobs too yet they all seem to be for people with certain qualifications, registered with a certain group or have experience then say full training will be giving. it's kind of a *****

Here's a tip: apply even if you don't meet the requirements. If they're posting ridiculous requirements for "trainee" jobs then chances are they don't expect and won't get somebody who actually meets them applying. The worst they can do is not call you back.

Meanwhile, develop your skills on your own. That's the cool part about IT/computer science. You can learn programming languages in your spare time with just a computer and an internet connection.

And thats why I am going to Law School. After graduating with two degrees (Business Administration and Criminal Justice) I got a minimum wage job in the Electronics department of Wal-Mart. I ended up stocking the whole store because they refused to train me on the cash register (meaning I had nothing to do once my department was stocked). After a week of that crap I quit. I didn't go to college for five years to be a stockboy.

All the other "entry level" positions I've found require 3-4 year of experience in that field. That is not entry level...

Yeah, it's no good. Where I am (Essex) there's barely even any temporary work available for anyone not qualified in accountancy. So I look in London, but the only job I've managed to get there was, after travel, less profitable than benefits. At the moment employers can afford to ask for just about as much experience as they like, and I don't have a vocational degree (Philosophy) so I've got no way to gain a foothold in any industry and no way to fund a more useful qualification. My student debt isn't going anywhere for a while.

I can assure you, you're not the only one. Despite all the helps I had gotten (interview technique, updating my cv etc) I'm still unemployed to this day, well I did had a work experiences in the past but that about it (and several fails interviews).

I always find it strange they are looking for people with X amount of year under there belt, wouldn't it be better to know how many hours they got under there belt instead? ._.

Yeah its a real nightmare. I've been trying to get something in graphic design and the only people willing to actually 'hire' me are shady intern programs. I've gotten to the point that I'm just applying to anything that may give me 40 hours and still coming up empty handed. This is what you can get with a Bachelors these days I guess. 5 years and thousands of dollars down the toilet.

Yeah, the job market is horrible. I haven't had a job since 2008, and even then it was only for three months, and before that was 2006 (I had a job non-stop from 2004 to 2006 though. I guess it was before that was really bad).
I'm 26 and I've been unemployed more than employed during my "active" life. My roommate was unemployed for 2 years after she graduated her Masters, and they only thing she found was minimum wage job, that's reducing her hours to half time for next year (she's renewed by the year, has been doing that two years so far).

It's pretty horrible. I've been applying to anything I can think of, but with so many people looking, I guess I'm just not being lucky. I didn't even hear back from McDonald's. I don't know what's wrong with me that nobody will even call me for an interview :(

But you've got to keep trying I guess. Keep applying everywhere whether they're hiring or not, call them to ask about it, go back in and ask... At some point you can find something I'm sure.
In the meantime I'll contemplate how much easier it would be to get a sugar daddy or something >.>
