I've been thinking of getting a new board game and I am curious if there are any fun and relatively quick rpg like board games out there so I can get my family into it ( they don't like video games). Now it doesn't have to be a an rpg basically just state your favorite semi obscure( ie not monopoly)board game.

If you're up for a game guaranteed to rip friendships and families apart, nothing beats a four hour slog of Risk.

Settlers of Cataan.

Ninja Burger.

Battle of the Bands.

Two by Two.

All fun, all easy to learn.

... a little more advanced, Puerto Rico.

Before I'll recommend anything, just one question. How much experience do you and your family have with more modern board games? Just so I know what weight would be appropriate for your group. The more RPG-like games tend to be a bit heavier (not all of them though).

It's seriously fun and you get to really screw each other over.

I'm a huge fan of Betrayal at the House on the Hill

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/10547/betrayal-at-house-on-the-hill

Basically, you and the other players explore a haunted house (random board generation and stat boosting) and eventually one of you becomes the traitor and gets to control monsters in one of 50 different scenarios. It's very dynamic and never predictable. Up to 6 players can play.

Risk Legacy. Takes the basic formula to new heights of both depth and fun.

For a fuller idea, here is Rab Florences review from RPS:

Hmmm... only one recommendation is correct:

Mornington Crescent!

Cookie if you get it...
But does he get the 1832 edition, or the revised 1934 edition? It makes a difference around Paddington if you're in the spoo.

For other board games of a lesser quality:

Last Night On Earth

Arkham Horror

Pandemic: 2-4 play co-op

Munchkin

The Awful Green Things from Outer Space

Flux

Ticket To Ride

Give Me the Brain

Dominion

Bang!

All very good, have played them all.

Forbidden Island. [link]http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/65244/forbidden-island[/link]

The premise is to capture four ancient treasures off of an island and escape before it sinks into the sea. It's up to 4 player co-op, has class-related special abilities, it's relatively easy to pick-up for most people, and is playable in about an hour if everyone at the table is new. It's one of my non-gaming family's favorite games to play when they visit.

Oh, it's also pretty cheap. I got if for $15USD at my local game shop over a year ago.

Seconded. Once it gets past three in the morning you really just want to take everybody out.

Also, Escape from Colditz can be fun. You basically have to break out of a nazi prison by collecting equipment, rolling a high number and making a break for it. Someone has to play the part of nazis and catch you.

Talisman was once considered Holy Grail of Board Gaming. It aged terribly both in terms of graphics and outdated rules, but still it provides good fun. :)

I know, you asked about Board Game, but please, reconsider it and try...
