I am really in the mood for a good RTS to play but i havent found one i have liked for years, although i admit i haven't been looking too hard, and would appritiate any recomendations.

My all time favorite RTS is Age of Mytholgy. I have lost count of the amount of times i have come back to this game, i just absolutely love it, so a game similar to this would be preferable. The reason i liked it so much was for its decent length campaign which was a nice story and wasan't just a collection of random missions and the gameplay was solid in my opinion so i could have plenty of fun with skirmishes and online play.

Games that i have also enjoyed includes Warcraft 3, rise of nations and the stronghold series.

Also games im thinking of trying are age of empires 3, stronghold 3 and starcraft 2, so if anyone could comment on these that would be great.

Thanks in advance :)

Another good RTS series is the Total War games. They differ a lot when compared to Age of Empires or Starcraft, but is goon none-the less. Supreme Commander 2 is nice for a console RTS and so is Command and conquer: red alert 3.

Civilization games are nice as well.

Yeah alot of my friends have said the total war games are good but i have heard they are more about controlling armies rather than base building, which im not sure what to think of as i enjoy building up my base. Is this true or am i completly imagining this? :L

Well, their isn't base building as you might think.

THEIRS CONTINENT BUILDING!

Ahem, what I mean is that you do build up your cities, towns, and income tiles. While its not as straightforward as base-building in Age of MYthology, but you get the general idea.

For Example:

A city without a Barracks, can only produce Militia units. When you build a barracks, you can recruit more professional types of units (Such as line-infantry, or hopolites) . Then if you upgrade that, you unlock even better units.

I know more about Empire: total war and napoleon total war than I do Rome, but from what I understand, Empire has more qualities that you are looking for.

No i haven't because i am put off RTS's set in modern(ish) eras but i don't know why. I guess im just afraid to try new things but saying that i really enjoyed rise of nations which goes though lots of time periods, from everyone throwing rocks at each other to launching nukes in the information age, so i should really be willing to give it a try! :L Thanks i will try looking it up.

Age of Empires 3 is alright. I've played through all the campaigns, including the expansions, and while I wasn't bored I probably won't be playing at again anytime soon.

Have you played Starcraft 1? Because SC2 has pretty much the same gameplay, so your level of enjoyment ought to be the same as well. The length of the campaign and variety of maps was great (first time I've seen a zombie level in an RTS), though the story tended to be a bit clichéd and there were a couple wince-inducingly cheesy lines. I personally rather liked the story anyway, but I can understand the criticism it's received.

I've heard good things about the Empire Earth games (the first two, at least), but I haven't spent much time playing them yet.

I haven't played SC 1 unfortunately. The only reason i thought i might like SC 2 is because i liked warcraft 3, but that may have been more for the story then the actual gameplay, as i used to play world of warcraft and it was fun to see how all the lore and characters in action. I think if SC 2 has a campaign like warcraft 3 then i will enjoy it.

I would tell you Starcraft games and at least CNC 1, 2, and 3.

My girlfriend would easily recommend you Total War games and Supreme Commander.

If you don't mind an older game check out Total Annihilation. It's the pre-cursor to Supreme commander, and an innovator in the genre. It was the first RTS to use point capture for resources as opposed to the finite ressources mechanic used by the rest of the field. This allows for much longer games that don't devolve into frantic resource rushes.

I'd also like to throw the original Dawn of War series on the recommendation pile. It uses the same resource mechanic as mentioned above, but with the added pleasure of the WH40K universe. Also, unit production and management is treated much differently. As opposed to creating a single unit each time it produces squads which can be reinforced and upgraded in the field. It also boasts one of the finest intro sequences to ever grace a video game.

Empires: Dawn of the Modern World is my favorite RTS. The only problem is that I can't find the blasted thing anywhere anymore. I couldn't find it on Steam. Still, I rather liked it. I found it to be engaging.

It depends on which type of RTS you enjoy. I can recommend you some that focus on different RTS aspects.

If you enjoy a straight up RTS with basebuilding, army building and want a great story and amazing cutscences with a bit of army customisation mixed in then Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty will sate your needs.

If you prefer a game where yo can build up a city and a civilisation and basically create your own paradise then Anno 2070 is a great choice. It looks beautiful, has interesting missions and will suck you in and take up a lot of your time. It's easy for beginners, but you do have to do a fair bit of reading to learn how the game works.

If you would like a combat based RTS where you only control a single sqaud, but you still want to able to customise their abilities and equipment without overloading you with customisation choices like Mass Effect 1, but also lets you play the story with different squads to keep things interesting then look no further than Dawn of War II: Retribution. It's way more refined than DoW II or DoW II: Chaos Rising and let's you play as Eldar, Orks, Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Tyranids or Chaos Marines with different characters and armies driving each race towards the same goal.

I was about to suggest Rise Of Nations, but it seems you've already played that. Maybe you could try the sorta-sequel Rise of Legends, I never played it myself but it looks almost as good, with a bit of magic and fantasy thrown in.

Or you could just go with Age of Empires, can't fail with that. AoE 2 and its expansion are probably the best. I played a demo of 3 and it didn't really impress me all that much, don't remember much empire building...
