Hi as its the Christmas period I've got some money to spend and I'm looking for a anime box set to waste my money on.

However I can't really find anything that really appeals to me on the shelves in HMV and so I'm reaching out for suggestions.

Generally I don't like series that go on forever with lots of filler or ones that are overly kiddy (can't think of a better phrase for it). I do like sci-fi and fantasy. probably the Anime I've most gotten into is Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

Any ideas?

Stein's Gate, A guy and his friends invent a time machine and things spiral out of control from there as they start to change the past. Draws inspiration from the real life figure John Titor with some pretty soft science. It is amazing from beginning to end with a great cast of characters.

Claymore is a decent fantasy series with a few good fights and some interesting mythology. Also most of the villains are so damn tragic that you can't help but feel for them.

Magic Knights Rayearth and Visions of Escaflowne are both series that try to combine fantasy with mecha and are actually pretty dang good. The latter implementing it better the the former. Rayearth focuses on a trio of girls and their development as people while trying to save the land. Escaflowne mixes shojo and shonen elements together against the back drop of a large scale war.

Steins;Gate and Baccano! are really good as others have mentioned already.

I strongly recommend Shiki and Elfen Lied, both are quite short and quite dark so I think they'd fit your tastes rather well. Both are absolutely amazing.

I get the impression people scoff at Cowboy Bebop for getting so much exposure but fuck it, I saw it, I loved it, I'm doing a Let's Watch about it, why shouldn't I recommend it? It's sci-fi and only lasts 26 episodes, so it fills in your likes and do's to a T.

Gundam Wing would be my greatest recommendation, along with other Gundam series. Wing in particular does not overstay its welcome having about 50 episodes and a movie. Has a good English dub if you don't feel like reading subtitles. It's sci-fi which you say is one of your preferred genres too.

you can never go wrong with Cowboy Bebop. i would also recommend Trigun. both are only 26 episodes + 1 movie in length, so you arent getting into some massive saga.

Gunslinger Girl - Little girls with cybernetic implants trained in gun and hand-to-hand combat... (This is their character story...)

Excel Saga - Scifi comedy/parody that needs to be seen to believe... (Eat the dog!!)

Samurai Champloo - Two rival samurai (with vastly different sword styles) help a girl find a samurai "who smells of sunflowers... (Hilarity and swordplay ensure mixed with hip-hop undertones and overtones...)

Eden of the East - "Random" people are given the power to change the world... Not everyone can do it and only one can be "victorious"... (Movie sequels may be viewed afterwards, but warning may be needed...)

Cowboy Bebop - The tale of four space bounty hunters... (I don't need to explain why you should buy this series... JUST DO IT!! ...And then also buy it's movie, too!!)

I'd actually picked Eden of the East up a while ago and rather enjoyed it.

Cowboy Bebop does interest me and I was thinking of buying it, but I was concerned with the rip-off store prices. The Amazon UK prices however are much better.

Awesome!
...And yeah, I ended up spending over 50 dollars for just the complate series of Cowboy Bebop alone... and I'm temping to later buy it again when it's re-released on Blu-Ray alongside the re-releases of Code Geass, Witch Hunter Robin, Outlaw Star, and Escaflowne... (I was originally just listing the series that I usually recommend because I own them myself...)
