If you're a shooter fan, I suggest Metal Gear Solid 4. Lots of drama, lots of action, and a good conclusion to a long-running story.
Like horror? The Fatal Frame series is wonderful. It deals with love, loss, fear, and strength through the eyes of three young women.

If you like RPGs, you may want to look into Faery: Legend of Avalon, on the XBLM. It's clearly only the first part of a series, but the story is interesting, the visuals nice (if a bit too dark to see clearly sometimes), and the world generally enjoyable.
Neither a shooter nor an RPG, but I recommend Bladestorm to everyone anyway. That game deserves a lot more credit than it is given.

Like as in a 360? Borderlands if your friends/siblings/significant others will want to play massive amounts of co-op with you, TF2/BFBC2 if you like multiplayer, Mass Effect 2 if you like single-player.
For one of the best RPGs to come out in quite a while, wait for the port of Witcher 2. Apparently it plays pretty well with a controller haha. Otherwise, ME2 again is a game you can't go wrong with. If you want a co-op RPG, there's a Tales game (I think Vesperia?) out for the 360.
