Fist of the north star It is a ultra violent action anime. The old series has not aged well at all. It can be drawn very well then very crappy.{Mainly the first arc.] If you like action anime and are open minded you should like it.] Just remember the anime has been made in the mid 80's. The 86 movie on the other hand has aged very well.
You wa Shock!
Actually, it's become quite fun to watch because it ages badly.
I recommend Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star as well.

I knew I was missing one show on my list and that was it.

You are already dead for forgetting to list hokuto no ken! Just kidding!

The original Dragon Ball is pretty awesome, plus it has heaps of episodes, around the 300 mark.

Okay, I've recommended this before on the Escapist, but it's worth it every time.

Monster.

Alright, it's not that light-hearted bit it is a decent length (74 ep.) and it has an absolutely brilliant continuous storyline. It's about this Japanese doctor living in Germany - he saves the life a little boy and years later discovers the boy was (and still is) a sociopathic serial killer. Feeling responsible for bringing this "monster" back to life, the doctor decides to hunt him down and kill him.

I really can't recommend this one enough. The plot takes so many twists and turns and the characters are all so compelling it's just......just...awesome. Really, check it out.
This. Monster is the greatest anime ever, in my opinion.

OK, this is what I have so far:

~~~Definitely~~~
Cowboy Bebop Movie
Full Metal Alchemist (& Movie)
Death Note
Bleach
Gundam Wing
Ghost in the Shell (& Movie)
~~~Almost definitely~~~
Soul Eater
Monster
Naruto
FLCL

~~~Maybe~~~
Ranma 1/2
Yu Yu Hakasho
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad
Tenchi Muyo
Haruhi
Did I miss anything big?
Remember, I can only watch so much, I only have a couple of months before school kciks in :p
Samurai Champloo. Only one season of about 26 episodes but if your considering FLCL (6 eps) which is also very good then I could not recommend Samurai Champloo high enough. Is my second fav anime.
I'm looking for an anime to watch, and I figured this was as good a place to ask as any. I just got finished with Cowboy Bebop and while it was very good, it wasn't really what I was looking for.
I'm looking for something that is a bit more long-running (As opposed to something I could watch in two days, like Bebop).
I'd also prefer something a bit more lighthearted (something in the vein of Dragonball would be nice) and with a little more focus on story and continuity than Bebop.
So, any recommendations?
Continuity in Dragonball? I m no expert but isnt Dragonball the series that has a planet exploding in 5 minutes and they take like 7 episodes for it?
Wow. Nobody's even mentioned the wonder that is
VALKYRIA CHRONICLES
The anime.
It's fun, funny, action-packed, and just plain enjoyable.
You'd be hard pressed to find a 200+ episode animé that retains it's quality. I'm not keen on Naruto or One Piece at all, and I felt Bleach rapidly decline after the first 50-60 episodes. Unlike most of the people here, I'd say don't watch Death Note. I thought the manga was brilliant, but felt the animé was a bit overdramatied and harder to take seriously.
If you want my opinion for good animé, I'd list FLCL, Gunslinger Girl, The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya (looks a lot more clichéd than it is!), Trigun, Ghost In The Shell: SAC. I'd definitely try all of those.
I'd recommend Gantz if you just want some "dumb fun". Lots of gore and stuff. But don't expect depth. If you don't mind romantic comedy, you could give Chobits a try. I detest romantic comedy, even in animé, but I found Chobits watchable, and it's probably as good as romantic comedy will get xD.
Lastly, if you don't mind being depressed, give Elfen Lied or She: The Ultimate Weapon a watch. Both I found extremely engaging and interesting, but ultimately very upsetting. I'd still highly recommend them as well.
TLDR;
Watch FLCL, Gunslinger Girl, The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya, Trigun, Ghost In The Shell, Gantz, Elfen Lied and She: The Ultimate Weapon
Anything but Naruto or Death Note. Eugh.
I'd suggest Outlaw Star. That was quite entertaining. FLCL is a must, too.
One Piece? I hadn't even considered that... I guess mentally I had just filed it along with card captors and yu gi oh. I'll definatly have to consider that!
Also, are there any anime where I should avoid the subbed version? I usually go for subs over dubs, but if there are any exceptions I should make, let me know.
Double also, is anyone else watching Dragonball Kai?
I would but I can't stand subs.
I'm watching the whole original series at the moment.
As for advice, the only 200ep plus one I can think of is DBZ, which is great. If you like guys with unnaturally large muscles shouting and spending 8 episodes charging up one attack only for them to realise that the universe has been destroyed.
But in all seriousness DBZ is great.
Bleach-cause it's amazing, funny and action packed
Slayers-if you want a funny, fantasy anime, it is an older one though
Planets-scifi, kind of funny
Ranma 1/2-it's older but still funny
Gurren Laugen-can be very funny,scifi
Lucky Star-FUNNY!!
