Not games made by Japanese companies (though I expect most if not all will be), but games set in Japan, mainly of the feudal Japan type. I have Mystical Ninja music playing right now, and its making want to wander in historical Japan.

Not going to limit suggestions much beyond that, cause I'm curious what you guys might dig up for me. Action, RPG, Platformer, whatever.

Bonus points for any game that's essentially Elder Scrolls in Japan. Now that would be sweet. (But again, all suggestions welcome)

Elder Scrolls in feudal japan? I can't think of anything quite like that. You could try Okami, it's like Zelda in a japanese setting, and a pretty good game to boot.
Otherwise... Total War: Shogun is a strategy game where you play as a daimyo. There's also the Nobunaga's ambition series (there was a pokemon one) which is a turn based tactics IIRC. Maybe Samurai Warriors, though that's a brawler. And Way of The Samurai, but I know literally nothing about that game.
Modern day japan is somewhat easier; Persona would be the obvious choice but there's a lot of JRPG's and stuff with a modern setting.

But basically, Okami is the best one I can think of.

Edit: Oh, and Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines. It's like Darkest Dungeon, but you control a clan trying to regain their power. It's... strange, but worth a look if you're interested. I enjoyed what I played of it on my PSV.

Shogun Total war takes place in feadal Japan and even goes into early medieval and the time of modernization if you buy the expansions.

If you're willing to try something more complex than I'd suggest Nobunaga's ambition. Its a very historical accurate depiction of 16th century Japan.

how about way of the Samurai 4 on PC, you will need a controller to play as the I find the keyboard and mouse controls are a bit weird (its a console port) its not by anyways elders scrolls but its definitly one of the most Japanese games I have played, it takes plays during the final years of the Japanese shogunate where they are dealing with the influx of foreign powers, which is what the main plot is about, you can even side with the British (because there super cool) as well

Bizzarely despite having a good collection of JRPG's I don't know a game that's stricktly japanese, Okami is a good start, I also heard Tenchu is great.
Most JRPGs either go for something like Final Fantasy style or weirdly European, like Dragon Quest. Though Japan often does European fantasy better than Western RPGs, like Dragon's Dogma, Dragon's Crown, or Kingdom Under Fire.

Ive started Okami, but its been stuck on my list of games to go back to but I never do cause I'm so worried I will start it, get far, stop, go back, get lost, restart game...repeat. Suppose I need to get over that though, since I did enjoy what I played.

Havent played the others of the series, but Tenchu Z is the ONLY Ninja game I have ever played where you actually act like a Ninja. Ninja Gaiden, Mortal Kombat, even Mystical Ninja doesn't really do ninja stuff.

Way of the Samurai seems like...such a tease of what I want. It seems very unfinished, and off. If it goes on sale I will give it a try though, cause it seems the closest to anything I could hope for.

Kuon. It's set in the Heian Era. It's a PS2 suvival horror game by FromSoftware, before they did nothing but Dark Souls.

Jade Empire, a decent RPG made by Bioware that is loaded with Feudal Japan aesthetics.

Another lesser known one is called Throne of Darkness, it's actually set in Feudal Japan and is a Diablo-style action RPG hack'n'slasher where you control 4 out of 7 samurai. It's very dated but still fun I think.

Except Jade Empire is through and through fantasy counterpart of Feudal CHINA.

OT: "Shogun(2):Total War" if you're talking down-to-earth historical Japan. "Sengoku" is basicly Crusader Kings set in feudal Japan from what i've heard.

"Way of the Samurai" isn't a strategy, and is more tongue-in-cheek but it looks helluva fun.

"Onimusha" series maybe?

Remove everything from .com to before the = symbol, and but it all in brackets. So, youtube=therandomlettersanddnumbers, but inside [ ].

You really need a playstation to play anything the Japs make thats not nintendo.

Samurai warriors is good I think. It's a hack and slash set in Japan's warring states period.

Onimusha. A survival horror series set in feudal Japan.

Persona 3 or 4. You essentially take control of a high school anime with monsters and mystery.

Ive noticed a lot of PS2 games, but mine is still hooked up in my room, so I'm good there. Its actually getting the games that I have to deal with. But there have been a lot of cool suggestions that I'm interested in checking out.

honestly its a real shame SEGA never brought Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin over to the US and EU

this game has some of the coolest finishers in a game ever, and is pretty much a face lifted Yakuza title..... but SEGA says we dont want it, so we dont want it :(

people often complain that they want a game like shenmu for years and years, and they just dont get it, there is and has been there since the PS2 its just called Yakuza and is one of the best game series on playstation for a Japanophile.

Way of the Samurai 3. I'm seeing a lot of people mention 4, but I've played both, and Way of the Samurai 3 is the only game I've ever played that actually felt like I was playing as a Ronin of the period. Btw, I actually dislike #4. I tried to like it, I really did, but it just felt lacking compared to the previous title.

You might be interested in the upcoming Nioh, which is basically Onimusha mixed with Souls, set in 17th-century Japan. It had a demo as well, but I think it's no longer available for download.
