Hey all,

I'm really getting into electronica lately and want to know if you have any good suggestions for me. I'm really picky about it though, nothing too obnoxious or busy and I generally prefer it without lyrics cause singers always seem to fuck up electronic music. I like atmospheric kind of stuff that isn't boring or just something that sounds really awesome. I'll provide examples below.

Unfortunately I don't know how to embed videos, so you'll all just have to take an extra step. Anyway.

The great Trent Reznor - his soundtrack to The Social Network is the best electronic music I've ever heard:

Been really into Crystal Castles new album; love their dark and haunting take on rave music:

This guy, Mosh, I just discovered on Bandcamp, he's only got like 400-some likes on Facebook, but I love his debut album, it just sucks me right in. It's free too so you guys should take a look if you like it:

So yeah, there's a little of what I like. Recommend me some more, please!

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but try Chicane; pretty chilled out stuff, although it can be a little boring/samey after a while. Good driving music though :)

Pretty generic really, but that's about all I can offer, not too clued up on this kind of music :(

Is Drum & Bass electronica? I get confused with all this pigeon-holing of music sometimes...

edIT from The Glitch Mob is worth checking out. HIs 2004 solo album is a little more restrained and chill, and his 2007 album Certified Air Raid Material is more along the lines of something you'd hear at a club, not that that's a bad thing, I'd be more inclined to go out to clubs if they played music like that. I'd take Crying Over Prose For No Reasons over Certified Air Raid Material, glitch hop done in a way that isn't danceable is a pretty incredible feat considering the genre is great for big beats.

You'll also want to check out Ulver's 2000 album Perdition City which is an amazing blend of trip-hop, electronic, and ambient, and it's doubly impressive considering they started out as a black metal band.

Those two albums are good places to start.

Check out Mike Shinoda's soundtrack to "the Raid: Redemption. It's killer.

other than that: I don't know too much. Err... Early "Rammstein" (Herzleid and Sehnsucht) and "Eisbrecher" are Neue Deutsche Harte, which is electronic mixed with industrial metal.

Also, Early "Die Krupps" and "And One" are good. Sorry, all the electronic stuff I know is german.

Or Japanese.

I believe it is, but it's generally too busy for my liking. Thank you for your recommendations, I like the second.

Thanks a lot guys, these are all really helpful.

LoathsomePete, I like the Glitch Mob so I will take a look at some other songs from the album you mentioned. The second link you posted is ... interesting, I can see myself liking it but it will probably be an acquired taste.

Sextus, that song from The Raid was awesome, just the kind of stuff I like.

Fapper (lol), I really like Rotersand's sound, I just wish the songs weren't quite so long. And Assemblage 23 was great as well. The rest are a little too busy for my tastes.

Zykon, same deal. A little too busy.

This is good stuff though, keep them coming! :D

I figured that after I saw your other comments, refresh my post, there's a couple more less energetic ones in there.
Thank you sir. Aphex is a little TOO ambient, I generally like a steady beat to follow. Even though Hallucinogen was one of the faster, crazier ones, I quite like that creepy Halloween tone it has. The Future Sound of London is also interesting for ambient techno, I'll look at more of it to relax to. I think Little Fluffy Clouds was actually my favorite - I like the synth sounds they used.

Thanks again, I apologize for my pickiness, I'm just trying to make it easier to pinpoint my specific tastes.

I'd like to recommend Pendulum, Funker Vogt, and Innerpartysystem but I imagine that you wouldn't like any of them very much, OP. Sorry. D:

Bear in mind that most of the stuff I posted is very old (like me), mainly 1991 to 1996 ish. The older stuff tends to use analogue synths which sound...richer, somehow.

Maybe try FSOL's next 2 albums, ISDN and Dead Cities, they are way more creepy.

None of these are obscure in the slightest, and you probably know them already. Still, here's a few random recommendations.

Moby has some great songs

Underworld

and you probably already know this but it's a classic

Orbital

The xx are great, but might not be what you're looking for. They're amazing though so I thought I'd include them.

Firstly, call it electronic music cos you get people in the genre who will take the piss out of you for calling it "electronica"

Secondly, these

^^this guy is one of those artists where I could pick any song by him. Every fan of his has a different favourite song of his so it's hard to pick one. This one is quite progressive and long, signature of his more recent sound. His older stuff is much simpler and based around chopped up hooks. Both styles are amazing. Best dubstep artist ever. No artist has influenced a single genre so much since My Bloody Valentine for shoegaze
^^absolutely mindblowing. so chilled out, so perfectly composed. absolute must listen

I'm into my dark, ambient electronic music. Mostly dubstep but there's some techno and idm there too.
If you're not looking for particularly ambient stuff just listen to the Phaeleh and Swarms songs. Oh but you have to listen to Burial in some form or another. He was the guy who got me into ambient electronic music in the first place. Heck he probably got me into electronic music period.

^one of his earlier songs

Oh boy...
Lets see. You have Röyksopp for chill-out, but their tracks can also be quite uplifting. My favorite electronica band of all time.
Chill:

Upbeat:

Other great songs by this band:

Then there's Daft Punk and Justice, which you likely have heard of. Great bands.

Philter is an artist I recently discovered. It's a mix of classical and electronica. Sounds very unique, and quite good as well.

Ratatat is also a good electronica band. Reminds me mostly of Justice, but their tracks are more repetitive. Still have a very distinct sound.

I'm a DJ, so this sort of thread gets me excited. Love sharing music with people.
Let's start with some Glitch Hop which I've been producing a lot of lately just for the love of it. Funky and slow at 100bpm-ish, with all sorts of crazy synth sounds being tossed at you.
Pegboard Nerds are a good place to start.
This McMash Clan tune is an epic example of genre crossing Big Beat, Glitch Hop, Moombahton. Brilliant Work
Next up, some Moombahton which sits a little bit faster at around 112 and adds in Latin and Reggaton rhythms.
Dillon Francis, if you don't know the name prepare to be blown away:
If you don't know who Feed Me and Kill the Noise are... Well damn. That's just messed up. Let's fix that right now:

And I'm spent for now, good places to start for sure. The EDM scene has gotten amazing in the past few years, and the potential of synthesizers is MASSIVE, and only beginning to be tapped.
