In specific, I'm looking for alternative rock, yet I'd like to avoid the mopey stuff like Nirvana as well the music that's transitioned completely into punk and ska. The sound I'm looking for is like "Debaser" by The Pixies or just about anything by The Pillows: upbeat, lots of open chords, etc.

Anything by Thrice. Their discography runs the gamut from post hardcore, metal, alt rock, to folk, etc. They've constantly evolved their sound, yet remained consistent.

If you like the Pixies then I'd definitely recommend Pavement.

Also, you can't go wrong with Fugazi. For any situation.

Lets see...*listens to the song*

My immediate thought is Cage the Elephant. They got some mopier songs too, but I think youd like them.

I think you'd like The Strokes:
Some of their songs are a little out there (almost all of the songs on Comedown Machine), but most of their music sounds a lot like the above.

The Strokes is certainly an energetic sounding Alt-Rock band. Even early Strokes (such as the song you posted) where the singer looks like he is going to pass out any second is quite fast-paced.

I'm going to get on listening to all of this; thanks all for the suggestions! "Last Night" is amazing by the way, so thanks for that! I need to listen to more of their stuff.

Happy to help. They're one of my favourite bands and out of all their albums, I think I've disliked only few of their songs.

My advice: go with Imagine Dragons. They've got some good tunes with a variety of sounds. That's the best one I can come up with...

"Alternative Rock" is a bit of a loose definition, but I can recommend some progressive rock? They do a lot of experimentation with melody and composition.

Yes and King Crimson are the immediate bands that come to mind.

The Smiths might also be a good avenue, but some of their songs are a little downbeat, but other songs of theirs are very upbeat, like This Charming Man.

There's also the Killers, who are rather similar to the Strokes and did the classic "Mr. Brightside".

Finally, I am always a fan of older 80s new wave/rock, like Joy Division or some of Tears for Fears
