I just thought of something spontaneously, and that is that I haven't really read/watched any fictional works with evil protragonists in.

So Escapist, could you recommend any books/movies etc. that has am evil villain protragonist? Or at best, a really cruel antihero. Bonus points for face heel turns.

I'm looking forward to any recommendations.

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy is a great book about some of the most evil people I've ever seen in fiction.

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. The book was written in order for the author to explore why people do some of the horrible things they do.

Grendel by John Gardener
Tells the story of Beowulf, but from Grendel's perspective, and it's a lt more intellegant.

The Stranger (or The Outsider if you're not an American) by Albert Camus
Hard to describe this one, but Massault is like the OG existentialist.

The only two novels we've read in English last semester (also I actually read both of them)

Abraham:"Oh, so just kill my favorite son? Why?"
God:"I need to know that you are true beliver."
Abraham: "Kay, cool."
[About to Kill his son]
God: "Woah bud. We're cool. Nevermind. Just wanted to know."
Abraham:"Aww! Ya got me there, Lord! Ha! Good one."

Haha. Interesting take on the story indeed.

Thank you all for your suggestions. The ones that come to mind due to farmiliarity are death note and a clockwork orange. I will definately definitely look into them. Keep the suggestions going guys!

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. The main character actually declares himself evil.

Darth Bane Trilogy by Drew Karpshyn if your'e into Star Wars.
Forgotten Realms - War of the Spider Queen series.
R.A. Salvatore's - The Sellswords
Dan Abnett's Darkblade series, Warhammer universe.

These are ones i've read and liked...
You might want to check here [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VillainProtagonist] for more, and tvtropes in general for books, either by genre or well, trope...

But be warned,

Sweeney Todd. A complex antihero and a good story. And blood...so much blood (which in the Tim Burton release is...orange?)

The Malus Darkblade novels from Black Library's Warhammer titles should count. The only thing that makes Malus slightly redeemable is that he's fighting jackasses even worse than himself.

The Count of Monte Cristo. Yah, sure its for revenge whatever.... but the asshole takes it waaaay too far. If he's not a villain protagonist he's atleast a very grey/black antihero.

The Horus Heresy book 'Fulgrim' by Graham McNeill.

Brilliant portrayal of Primarch Fulgrim's fall to Chaos. He spends two thirds of the book going batshit insane and loving it.

This, so many times this. Both the book and movie are great.

Lelouch was far from evil. I like code geass because it was not so black and white

I suppose that Lelouch from Code Geass could be considered evil, depending on your views.

I'd agree with the first 4 books of the Darkblade series, he turns into a common or garden hero by the end for no good reason.

I'd disagree with Fulgrim, Graham McNeill spent way too much of the book wanting to be congratulated for having read The Picutre of Dorian Gray.

Lord of the Night, though, is great, best Horus Heresy related book. It helps that it's not part of the HH series, which was pretty ordinary at best.
