Hello,
I've ordered a cheap Wii U off eBay after my Wii broke so I could play Xenoblade Chronicles and my virtual console games, and I was thinking I might as well pick up a Wii U game or two before it arrives.
So, fellow Escapists, are there any good Wii U games one might recommend to me?

Best Games:

Super Mario 3D World - Possibly the best 3D Mario to date.

Bayonetta 2 - On release this would get you both Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2. Not sure if that is still true, but either way it is a great game.

Pikmin 3 - Best Pikmin and one of the most beautiful games I have ever played.

Wonderful 101 - Another game by Platinum. Ridiculous and fun.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - Best 2D platformer on the system in my opinion.

Good games:

Rayman Legends - Very good 2D platformer.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse - Shantae is a series of solid metroidvanias, well worth your time.

Hyrule Warriors - This is one of those games that if you like it you tend to really like it, but it is not everyone's thing. Take a look at some videos of it (don't worry about spoilers, the story is pants on head stupid.)

Wind Waker HD - A great update to a great game. Buy it if you want to play Wind Waker again but with significantly less time sailing.

Captain Toads Treasure Tracker - Not a game I would recommend to anyone. It is a fun, easy going game, the sort you play to relax instead of for a challenge. Get Mario 3D World first and see if you like the Toad Mini game a lot.

Multiplayer games:

Mario Kart 8
Smash Bros

Things to avoid:

New Super Mario Bros Wii U - Actually a good game, but if you like 2D platformers there are several better on the system. Get DKC Tropical Freeze first, Rayman second and then look into this if you are still looking for a 2D platformer.

Other notes:

Don't neglect the virtual console and eshop. You can great some great entertainment for really cheap, especially on the Virtual console. Pick up Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past if you have never played it, and Mighty switch force is good too.

Edit: I can give more details on any of these titles if you would like.

Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World.

That's all I got -- I'm struggling to find other games to play on the Wii-U myself. Maybe I'll pick up DKC: Tropical Freeze eventually.

If you're a horror fan, ZombieU is much better than it sounds. A good story with some innovative mechanics and a fun asymmetric multiplayer mode

Pick up Shovel Knight, Teslagrad and Nano Assault Neo on the eshop.

If you like fun you should try those.

Bayonetta 2 is seriously fantastic. Mario Kart 8 is a surprisingly great game and a big step forward for the series, even though at its core it doesn't feel like much has changed. Mario 3D world is no Galaxy but still worth it.

But seriously. Bayonetta 2. Do it.

Bayonetta 2 and Shantae and the pirates curse are ones that are well worth your time.

I also enjoyed Rayman Legends other than that I havent tried or enjoyed much else. Smash was ok and I havent tried Wonderful 101 but that looks good same with Super Mario 3D world. Lots also seem to like Mario Kart 8 I personally found it atrocious easily the worst MK game I have ever played which is all of them except for the 64 version.

Im personally waiting for Xenoblade X now.

I've been really curious about NFSMW, especially since the price started dropping. Doesn't it also play more like a Burnout than a NFS too?

---

Here are some of the games that I've really been enjoying on my Wii U!

physical discs
Bayonetta 1/2
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Hyrule Warriors
Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
New Super Mario Bros U (there is a bundle that includes Luigi U, I would recommend that one)
Super Mario 3D World
Super Smash Bros U
The Wonderful 101
Zombi U (it's survival horror, it's dirt cheap)

digital
Donkey Kong Country
Earthbound
Mega Man (S/NES, pick-your-poison)
Mega Man X
NES Remix 2 (although you may want to get the disc since both are on it, I prefer the second which is more challenging and has arguably better games)
Shovel Knight
Steamworld Dig
Super Mario Bros 3
Super Mario World
Super Metroid

Games that I admittedly haven't played yet though which look interesting to me

AVGN Adventures
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
Klonoa
Pushmo World
Shantae

Underlined my five favorites. Aside from these I'm really looking forward to Yoshi's Woolly World, Splatoon, Star Fox U and I'm really curious to see if Project Giant Robo will be re-branded as a reboot of Teleroboxer.

Until project cars comes out, its one of the few racing games for wii u. I never got the problem with it playing like Burnout since the Shift Series plays nothing like the old need for speed games.
