So I've started watching a whole bunch of movies from the past that are just brilliant. None of that mediocre stuff that seems to litter the cinema every summer.
The best movies are the ones that stick around.

But I've run out of movies basically and as the title says I would like some suggestions :p
Preferably classics (but none of the obvious ones like Titanic or whatever, I'm more of a cult movie fan)
Here are some movies of the type I like I have recently watched and loved:

Scott Pilgrim VS The World
Love Exposure
High Fidelity
Being John Malkovich
From dusk till dawn
Machete

Much appreciated :)

I'd suggest The Evil dead Thrillogy but you've probably seen them so...

Any movie by Sergio Leone (He made some great western?s in his time)
Dead man (Another western but it's a weird one)
Apocalypse now
The Warriors

And for an obscure one a very dark Irish comedy called "A film with me in it."

You know in a movie from my list that I watched this morning one of the characters mentions how good Evil Dead is and I thought I might check them out :)
I'll have a look thanks.

2001 a space odyssey
blade runner
escape from new york

some of my favorite movies
Blade runner comes from a kind of imagined background in my mind which I'm not sure of so, so far, I haven't watched it but people keep recommending it so..
Escape from new york is something I want to see thanks for reminding me.
Not just as it's own movie but as the main inspiration for my favourite gaming character snake from MGS, cheers :)

Cult movies? The Big Lebowski. That's all you need.

And if you want literal classics, Vertigo is a great movie, too.

Once Were Warriors, a great movie about Maori domestic violence, not for faint hearted types
Falling Down, it's got Michale Douglas being a badass in it
And The Big Lebowski if you like cult films

The Maltese Falcon
The Thing is a great movie I saw it a few days ago for the second time, The day the earth stood still is unfortunately outside my range of movie age.
What I mean is that it's so old (black and white and such) that I would have trouble enjoying it despite the fact that I'd probably love it had I been born then. Everyone has their limits.

Which War of the worlds film are you referring to? because I've seen the latest one and it didn't really compare to even the audio book for me. Although still good as a light refreshment to deeper more complex movies.

The Royal Tenenbaums (in fact anything by Wes Anderson, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Bottle Rocket, The Darjeeling Limited)
O Brother Where Art Thou? (Coen brothers just like The Big Lebowski)
Garden State
Tombstone (Lots of people have already suggested the Serigo Leone westerns so there's something a bit different)
Dr. Strangelove (or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb)
The Seventh Seal
To Kill a Mockingbird
Rumblefish
Brick
La Cité des enfants perdus (The City of Lost Children)

All real cult classics in my opiniom, hopefully you'll find something that suits your tastes there. Oh and Clerks!
Man am I replying a lot in this thread..

Yeah I've read a little about Dr Strangelove and my parents have it on dvd I'll check it out sometime.

And clerks, would you say it's anything like the kind of American laid back culture from say "Dude where's my car" (except maybe less surreal and more intelligent)?

You're ignoring films just because they're black and white?! That sounds idiotic to me.

I refer to the '50s era War of the Worlds, the ONLY good one.

-epic snip-
Vertigo is indeed an Alfred Hitchcock movie. A master of the craft, even if he was a little bit on the crazy side.

EDIT: Epic typo is epic...and fixed.

It is idiotic, which is why for the most part I don't do it. But like I said everyone has their limits and I would have to be in a certain mood to enjoy them. Mind that it's not just the color, it's the uncertain acting and general lack of immersion which is kind of engrained into me from watching so many modern movies.
It's also not so much ignoring as having trouble finding a time to watch them.

Hmm.. interesting!

I'd recommend the following;

The Breakfast Club http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088847/
Pump Up the Volume! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100436/
And... hard to find, but well worth hunting down - "Rosencrantz And Gildernstern Are Dead" - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100519/

All three are cult classics from the late 80's / early 90's have plenty of rewatch value and the latter title, IMO, should be shown in English class! :)

Hope you enjoy them as much as I still do! :)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. (best movie you've never heard of)

Rocky Horror Picture show (amazing this has not been mentioned yet!)

Lost Boys

Emperor's New Groove (the best Disney movie ever and yet somehow obscure)

Harvey (an actual 'classic' black and white movie)

Spirited Away

Well, The Man With No Name Trilogy (or The Dollars trilogy) is pretty awesome if you like Spaghetti Westerns.

Commando. Because you can't beat a bit of Arnie.

And A Bridge Too Far. I love old war films.
