red dead - am i missing something?

i recently started playing red dead redemption, a game i was super excited about. i loved GTA4, and i love the old western flicks, and to some degree i love the story and atmosphere in red dead.

however, i just feel that after playing for a couple of days and getting about half-way through the story that the game still hasn't got a hold on me.

i hate the characters - they are all annoying and have about as much personality as the zillions of randomly generated bandits.

the game is far too easy. 'expert' aiming mode is basically standard manual aim, which doesn't make much sense. you also still have full use of deadeye which makes aiming a complete joke. at times it feels like the game is playing itself (almost every missions' structure seems to be 80% "hold A to follow the NPC on horseback and listen to the boring dialogue"). oh, and you can survive about 30 shots and it takes 1-2 shots to kill the enemies, and you only fight like 4-5 enemies at a time? i think the only way you can die in red dead redemption is accidentally running off a cliff in the dark.

the combat just feels too long range, playing on a 50 inch HDTV and i can barely see the enemies because they're too far away (of course you can sprint into their face like a lunatic and perform an instant execution). the enemies might as well be 2d models with 8bit textures... where are the missions where you can get up close and personal with the enemies?

the game is too dark. daytime is beautiful, but seems to last for about 10 minutes followed by an hour of darkness where you can't actually see anything. i think it must be the darkest game ever...?

i don't even care about the bugs - except the fistfighting bug which basically removes all of the fun from bare fist fighting due to being completely inable to KO an opponent.

GTA4 was a 9/10 for me, one of the most enjoyable games i've played. red dead is probably more a 6.5/10.

I don't really know what you mean by dark, looks fine to me. Also, plenty of missions have you fighting more than 4-5 guys at a time.

I play on expert mode, and Dead Eye runs out quick enough that I haven't really relied on it too much.

I don't know man, I just haven't had these same problems. I love this game.

So... is this a user review or what?
Its what we like to call an opinion. Their very common round here but no-one seems to realise none of them matter.

OT:Most of your problems can be easily fixed.

Change the brightness.
Get closer to enemies.
Dont use Dead-eye.

I'm maybe an hour or two into mexico... haven't touched the game in weeks. Same issues for me, except the darkness thing. You're probably fast travelling during the day which eats up all the daylight.

Just for the hell of it, enable the cheats for both invincibility and being drunk. Save first. Go stir up some trouble with invincibility on, then go into drunk mode and enjoy Euphoria. Bonus points if you manage to get shot off a balcony.

There, I done gone gave you a few minutes of fun.

I guess I didn't realize the characters are shallow and stupid. Thanks for correcting me, and pointing out that characters that develop and have actual personalities suck.

I've never experienced the invulnerability you've experienced, many a time I've gotten off of my horse at a robbery place because the stupid women FOOL ME EVERY TIME! and gotten filled with lead and died. Hell, I've died from a single shotgun shot or one person with a revolver since I wasn't paying attention.

Looks like you've played about an hour of the game and judged the entire thing off of that. But, hey, whatever. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and if their opinions are based off an experience not representative of the whole, no matter of mine.

which character has a personality? i found them all to be annoying c**ts who i would rather shoot in the face than tolerate (with the exception of the armadillo marshall), even john. compared to GTA4, the story and characters are just awful imo.

for example ***SPOILER***
john even decides to help the mexican army and the rebels simultaneously, any person with a brain knew instantly that the mexican army was corrupt and wouldn't help your ultimate goal of locating williamson. there wasn't even a choice.
where exactly is the sense in that?

the story/game cut scenes are also full of old cliche crap that you can see coming a mile away but can't do anything to prevent it, yet a grizzled badass gunslinger like john marston can't see it coming and is basically an inbred hillbilly half-wit.

yeah, the story is baaad imo, having said that, i think there's more 'replay' potential than GTA4 merely thanks to the epic western town shootouts. shootouts were impossible in GTA4, as soon after the shooting starts you're surrounded by 50 policemen who spawn out of nowhere, not to mention the annoying helicopter above... there's no immersion when you have to take a break every 10 seconds to use your rocket launcher against a helicopter.

i'd like to scratch my initial rating of 6.5/10 and make it an 8/10.

Finish the game before you criticise the plot. If you have then take a look at this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.213770-Redemption-In-Fire-A-look-at-the-plot-of-Red-Dead-Redemption-SPOILERS] it might convince you to think of the plot a little more - it's actually pretty good. (Apologies for the flagrant self-advertising, but saves me having to explain the merits of the plot again.)

Marston is a good character, and I actually enjoyed the support cast. He helps both the rebels and the government because both purport to have the information he needs. As he iterates in many conversations, Marston doesn't give a crap about politics - he just wants to get his family back.

I agree with you on the gameplay though. It's functional but nothing special. I think most the gaming media have overblown the merits of this game.
