Needless to say, I've been looking forward to this game now for quite some time. As you should probably know by now, Red Faction: Guerilla takes place on Mars sometime in the distant future as a guerilla attempts to rid the planet of an opprsessive force: The Earth Defense Force. One outstanding factor of RF:G is that of destructable enviroments. Nearly everything in the game can be smashed into pile of rubble. The destructable enviroments and unique plot drive me to play this game to no end, though, we still have about two weeks until the full game is released. I don't know if it was simply to tease me or to make me want this game even harder, but THQ released a multiplayer demo onto XBox LIVE Marketplace this Thursday, and dare I say it (the Halo Gods will smite me) but it provided for some solid online multiplayer action. The enviroment, gameplay, and overall makeup of the game leave one with a satisfied, but yet, more incomplete feeling.
Enviroment
Right as I booted up this demo, I could tell that THQ and Volition were going for a great theme: Red. I understand that the game takes place on the Red Planet, but seriously... it was like the world was bleeding. Everything was red. Even the concrete was red. I was Red. It was extremely mind-bottling, but luckily, it was only a demo. The multiplayer demo only released one map, bleeding of red dust, but hinted towards more diverse enviroments.
The most impressive part of the multiplayer enviroment was the incredible destruction that was ensueing around me. If you thought that single-player was busy, wait until 15 others begin blowing up everything they see. While the destructable enviroments allowed for some unique gameplay, the map never drastically changed as was promised. Certain large stuctures stayed up and ultimately kept the map the same throughout the matches.
Gameplay
The gameplay is what really stood out about the multiplayer experience that is Red Faction: Guerilla. This demo only allowed one gametype, Damage Control, in which opposing teams attempt to control certain points in a level by destroying them while they are under rival control and then rebuilding them into your own structures. The game is fast paced and no points stay under one control for very long. The entire time, your rushing around the map attempting to take back what you've already lost, leading to a lack of any offense.
A stand out part of the multiplayer gameplay is that of power ups. Booths are set up around the map allowing one to attach a back-pack that adds a special ability to character. Some include the jet-pack, which creates some interesting aerial battles, and the rhino, wich propels you forward and makes you an unstoppable force. All of these power ups add a sense of energy to the gameplay.
Conclusion
Overall, the Red Faction: Guerilla Multiplayer demo plays just like any other multiplayer game. Though it has some unique aspects, these are often clouded by the idea that "We've done this before,"... even though we haven't. It has the Ghost Recond 2 feel where your glad you're playing it because its fun, but you know that the Master Chief staring out at you from the front of the Halo 3 is silently judging you. With this feeling of doubt also comes a feeling of summer fun. We all need a break from the same, so try out Red Faction: Guerilla when it comes out June 2.
