Recently my X-Box has been giving me the red ring of death, but with only the first and third player lights coming on and turning red. I was wondering if anyone else ran into this problem, and what exactly it is.

My theory is its overheating and if thats the case should i try buying this,

That's not the RRoD. Different ring patterns are basically different codes for system failures, you can look them all up on the Microsoft website. If it isn't three out of four ring segments turning (and staying) red, then it isn't the RRoD, in which case you need to check your warranty as it may not cover your particular fault.

DO NOT BUY THE INTERCOOLER!
Pardon the caps, but it's imperative that you heed that advice.
1) It voids your warranty
2) It increases the chance of ruining your Xbox
3) I used to work at Gamestop (EB Games) and we saw people try to bring it back when it was melting onto the back of their 360.

It's a shit product, it doesn't work. You want to keep it cool? Don't have the back of it right against a wall or the back of entertainment unit, and give it lots of breathing room. I knew a guy who laid it down, but set two block of wood underneath it (Not blocking the air vents) to keep it elevated to air could circulate all around it.

And that is if it's overheating.

But seriously, do not buy that product. It sucks. We discouraged people from buying it and we sold it. Don't do it.

From what I have seen, your code is an overheating issue. The best thing you can do first is check your fan's are all working properly.

I was looking stuff up the other week because my xbox had an error code (not this one though) and they said that they do not repair consoles if they think it has been used with a third party intercooler.

So if you're out of warantty then it doesn't matter so much.

Yes you console is over heated, you might want to put it in a place where it can get good air flow to the fans or get a cooler system to vent it better. Also if you get the error you need to let the system sit of several hours and completely cool before you use it again.

And to think, people complain the PCs are unreliable.

Pah.

Apparently, you should put a towel on it or something. That's what my mate did anyway, and he hasn't had any problems since.

I have one of those cooling systems on my 360. It makes it louder than my Desk top gaming Pc. But yeah from what I can gather it does its job well and keeps my 360 in a comfortable temperature.

Ok, the intercollers will void you warranty if it comes between the Xbox power supply and the console. As long as you get one that does not use the Xbox ac adapter then you will be just fine!

Thanks for calling me a jackass, douchebag.
It voids the warranty, Einstein, because it takes power from the power supply of the 360, something it wasn't designed for. It's only for use with the Xbox 360 console, not that useless Intercooler that does nothing. Which means Microsoft is totally free of any liability if it breaks. It's like trying to run it underwater. It's not made for that, you did it anyways, now it's broken and you want them to fix it? No, it was your own dumbass fault. Dumbass.

I've seen multiple systems where it was melted onto the back of the console. Multiple. Not just one. Not my cousin's Xbox. Strangers I've never met who came into my work. Why would I lie about this? I have no reason to.

And next time, try a response that doesn't start with a completely needless insult.

OK, no go on the Intercooler, a quick Google search said it can happen and that's enough to scare me away from it. I've recently had the xbox out on the carpet standing upright, but even after 10 minutes of being on after all night to cool down i get the error. Warranty is still valid till Xmas so I'll probably just send it in.

Mine got an overheating failure once, just leave it off and unplugged for a while (up to 24 hours) and it should be fine again (well, mine was) but yea don't by external coolers because all they do is suck power from the Xbox's fan, and the coolers themselves heat up more than the xbox does normally.
