A Hermit's Cave

Now, that pic was in a daily in the UK and I have to admit that when I turned over to that page I muttered 'how cute' with a rather silly grin, got stared at by the other commuters and realised the recoils/looks of mild to moderate revulsion upon turning to that page.

I am on record for liking insects and I think wetas are for all their bigness, rather endearing creatures. They're quite docile for the most part and while I've handled one before (not a giant weta, 'cos they're mostly in New Zealand), I'm tickled by the memory of it regarding me with sheer boredom!

Oh, and mind it doesn't bend its legs back...

Therefore, question: how skewed is your sense of 'cute'?!

I think I have a pretty vanilla sense of cuteness. Puppies, happy endings, Zooey Deschanel, all that jazz. I don't find babies cute though, but that's just because of my aversion to children.

As for the picture: Kill it with fire.

I tend to share a likeness for a lot of cute animals with other people. Then again, I think spiders are cute while everyone revolts at them.

When I saw this today I thought "WTF IS THAT THING!" I then proceeded to read the article and find out.

My sense of cuteness got pulverized when I read a strange manga a few days ago.
Now I don't know what's cute, what's a cute girl, what's an adorable boy, or why am I reading a manga about a cross-dresser. Which is surprisingly not bad.
Crap.
Back on topic - It doesn't look menacing, but I don't usually have that feeling when I look at puppies. I do however have that feeling when I look at gorgeous women, but I might be confusing it with something else.

after initial revulsion because i thought that carrot(?) was a human finger it was chowing down on, yeah i kind of have concede that it is a little cute. Still i imagine you would get some weird looks for thinking this is cute right off the bat.

That thing is disgusting, but then I am on record as saying I would end all insect life on the planet if I could: consequences to the ecosystem be damned!

I like normal cute things, kittens and such.

While I'm not repulsed by the sight of it, I don't think I'd want one as a pet.

That said, I find bees and snakes cute, even though they are often a lot more harmful.

Wasps and Spiders though... they can go die!

I'm sorry but I'm too distracted by all the people responding like that picture is of a real thing. I don't mind bugs but I'm finding it hard to believe one could get that big. Do they? I'm a little afraid to ask for proof. lol

I admit when I first click on the spoiler I was "WTH is that??!!".

However once that had died down I can see the cuteness to it but it still look abit creepy to me (you don't often see large insect like that).

The same can be said with that jumping spider face meme. I mean I have a fear of spider and was creep out by that image but over time I can see the cuteness apeal to it (the four large eyes) just as long it's in front view, not the side! Oh and please don't quote me with that jumping spider image! (I haven't fully got used to it).

Bees don't do any harm... except the occasional sting, and I find bees cute too... particularly drones, who are actually quite amusing... and oddly fluffy...!

That's an interesting picture there. I don't think you're weird for finding it cute.

My reaction to it is two-fold "aw... Cute", followed almost immediately by "Oh my god, what the hell is that freaky thing!"

But to me that tells me this picture blends cute features (the head of that insect is quite cute, as is the way it's eating that carrot), with somewhat disturbing features.
(It's body, and especially all the barbs and sharp points.)

Cute and scary.

I'd say there are certain features that are considered cute by most people, which you can find in all manner of places. Usually cuteness overwhelms anything else, but in some cases there's disturbing features counteracting this somewhat.

Since that's an actual insect of some sort, that combination is accidental. If it were a drawing, you could attribute it to the artist doing that deliberately.

Though I've seen drawings where something that was meant to be scary has had it's features altered into something that is just plain cute, despite what it's supposed to represent...

Well, people can be fatally allergic to bee stings, and even if they don't kill you they still sting like a *****.
