I only just discovered Resident Evil, never gave it much attention till now, but I caught one of the films a while back and now I can't get enough. Anyway, there are like 20 resident evil games, which can only mean that at least 65% of them are utter crap, so I need Escapee advice- which Resident Evil games are worth playing?!

IMO, pretty much the entire mainstream series is good. Even 5, which seems to be the whipping boy of the series.

Here is my recommendation which consoles to get the best experience for each game, if possible
Play 0(GC/WII), 1(GC/WII), 2(N64/DC), 3(DC), CV(PS3/360), 4/4HD(PS3/360), 5(PS3/360)

Revelations is also getting very positive reviews.

Going through all of those, you will pretty much have the entire story of the "main" RE series.

The fourth one and, um... the fourth one.

Just so long as you can ignore cringe-inducing dialogue.

DreamCast maybe? If that is the case than woah? I thought Resident Evil 3: Nemesis did get ported onto another console like the Gamecube?

DC is dreamcast indeed. The VMU integration and higher Resolution models made the DC version the best. For some bizarre reason, the GC version was a straight port from the PSOne Version.

Thats why i also said if you can. If you have access to a ps3, aside from RE0, you can get every single resident evil game in the main series.

2 and 3 are very good... in my memory. If I would replay them I probably wouldn't be able to suffer through the horrible controls any longer than 10 minutes.

Resident Evil 4 is the best in the series, along with being one of the best games ever.

in order that you should play and that are good
RE Zero for GameCube\Wii
REmake (remake of RE 1) for GameCube/Wii
RE 2 for PSX by far the best RE
RE 3 Nemesis for PSX my personal fav. it raises a lot of tension
RE 4 for PS2, GameCube, PSN, XBLA amazing new perspective for the series
RE 5 Gold for PS3, Xbox360 not really that good or of an improvement but for what it is its worth it

that's it all the others are good but not really necessary for the story, still if you want to try some spin offs I would say Revelations and Code Veronica X are your best bets

as a lot of people said the main series (RE 0, 1, 2, 3, CV, 4, and 5) are all worth playing.

I own and have beaten Survivor and Dead Aim. If you want a different perspective (quite literally) give them a try.

Now before people go on about how these 2 games suck.....yes, I know they suck and I completely agree with that general concept.....but they're like a guilty pleasure for me....

thats about it.

Unless you are into rail shooters.
Yeah 4,
If theyd remake them all(even 5)
with 4s mechanics theyd all be .....well 1 and 2 would be worth a revisit.
but you need to play 1 or at least watch it.

1-3 are the best. 4 is only considered good by people who do not like survival horror and instead prefer generic action games.

4 is my favorite. 5 is shit.

The ones before 4 just don't intimidate me because of the camera view. What I'd most like is an RE4-controlled game set in RE0-3, with a focus on survival and zomgscaryzombies.

Mostly all of them are good in their own way, but...

The remake of the first one for the Gamecube is incredible, probably the best one, and it's actually (dare I say it)... scary. Yeah, Resident Evil, and scary isn't really paired together all that much. It's graphics still look bloody gorgeous too, even though it came out ten years ago.

Resident Evil 3 is a great game also, I just love how the Nemesis pops up everywhere, even when you least expect him to. God I love the Nemesis! Best enemy ever.

The Dreamcast version of Resident Evil 3 is the definitive version, and has the instant unlockables and smoother graphics.

Most of the spinoff's are pretty rubbish, with the exception of Outbreak, which is pretty awesome, but has some of the longest load times I've ever experienced in a game.

Yeah, I think all numbered Resident Evil games ended up on GameCube, from 0-4 and Code Veronica X made it there too.

I would say that most of them are worth playing, but 4 and 5 are very different from the rest. 5 is great if you know someone who can join you in it, alone it's kinda painful with the herb wasting AI you get teamed up with. I have rarely had as much fun in any game as I had when I played through 5 with a friend of mine. I had to play through it twice because I had two friends who wanted to play with me. No complaints there. The railshooters are OK if that's your thing, but I haven't tried the outbreak games. If you're only going to play one Resident Evil game make it 4. That is my favourite, but it's not scary like the originals.

I'd say (as are pretty much everyone else on this thread) play RE:0 -> RE: 4.

4 changed up the series into a new path (behind the back camera, carry all items with you as opposed to in an item chest) but RE:0 - RE:3 remain my all time favorites. 4 is good, but GOD is it cheesy...

And 5....

Dear god 5...

Aside from Chris' roid rage, Wesker's angst, and the really horribly plot, I cannot STAND Sheeva as an co-op partner. I sadly dared Capcom to come up with someone more annoying than Rebecca Chambers...

Touche Capcom...Touche...

Anyways, I'd have to say if you have a Wii or a GC, just get them all for GC (for consistency's sake).

I know people hate the fixed camera angles, but honestly it lends itself to the scary atmosphere (as in "WHAT IN GODS NAME IS THAT AROUND THE CORNER? WHY CAN'T I CHECK WITHOUT GOING OVER THERE!!!! D:"

tl;dr

All of the main series = good

Off shoots = meh
