With grief I read top 10 OF ALL TIME-lists that don't include games older than 15 years. With sadness I browse through the forums, talking with people about gaming today. With my mind full of hope, I glance at my wall, filled with consoles and games.

The Escapist is known for it's wonderful community. You are all awesome! But for some reason, I haven't been seeing alot of collectors or retro-gamers around here. I want to talk retro for once! Are you for Blast Processing? Or does the 2600 create warm feelings in your pants- I mean chest? Please come out of your shelters and share your love towards old-school gaming on The Escapists! Let us form friendships and other social... Things...

Share us your views on retro-gaming and the most priced parts of your collection! I am eager to see the fanatics of the retro-side here on The Escapist!

Contra and Mario were off the hook, yo. As was Centipede (Atari 2600, my first game). I used to play Contra with my dad all the time. Good destructive family bonding time.

I just made a "best of" poll with 3-4 thirty year old series on it! I demand a personal apology, and a sponge cake.

My Wii has dozens of NES, SNES, Genesis and N64 games, and my 3DS has a bunch of old Gameboy and NES games. I love retro games. They're simple, easy to play, but hard to master. My all-time favorite game is and always will be Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars. My aunt also has an old N64 and during the holidays when I'm off campus, I stay over there and play through games from my childhood like Pokemon Stadium, Star Fox 64 and Bomberman The Second Attack.

I love retro gaming. And despite all the progress gaming has made, I still think there are lots of things developers really need to go back and re-learn from those days.

Is it strictly supposed to be console games? Because I was never much of a console gamer when I was younger. First game console I got was a playstation. Before that I played on my PC.

Freelancer, Fallout 2, Ultima VII, DOOM, Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall, Baldur's Gate, System Shock 2, Planescape: Torment, Command and Conquer...

Ah, good times. And thankfully most of those are available on GoG. So now I don't have to preform rituals to get technology from different periods to work together. Or, at least not preform as many rituals. Don't have to sacrifice as many goats and whatnot.

I was saddened to see in the most recent "What is your main console" there was no older/retro option. While some may not consider the PS2 retro that is my main console.

However I do love retro game. Most of the ones I play are old computer games. I have a laptop from '99 that I use to play all those old DOS games. I have no idea what I would do if it broke, since modern computers can't play my collection of awesome old games (and my most prized game being my copy of Duke Nukem 3D signed by John St. John). Though when friends come over I always force them to play my Sega Genesis. IMHO old multiplayer > current multiplayer (probably from my little sister syndrome where if I wanted to play I had to play with my bro since he never let the controller go). Not to mention since none of my friends are gamers they don't understand the controls of newer games but can easily get punch, kick, jump.

Ah my brother and I are big into retro gaming! We own (it's mainly him, to be honest), 3 SNES's, a NES, a Dreamcast, a Megadrive, a Game Gear, an Atari Lynx, a couple Gameboys, a couple Gameboy colours, a limited edition Famicom Gameboy Micro, a PS1, a PS2, 3 N64s. And a tonne of games, too.

Heck, I was playing A Link To The Past in bed only yesterday!

Retro gaming is the best! I'd still much rather break out my NES than sit around on a 360, most of the time. Not that modern games aren't good, there's just a certain charm to old-school gaming, with great controls and sometimes even fantastic story lines.

Gotta say, my top favorite is still Chrono Trigger. Got an original cartridge for the Super Nintendo with a fully in-tact box with all the original booklets and inserts and the like. It's the shining gem of my collection. I've got other good ones too, but I'm partial to Trigger.

I have a healthy balance between favourites of retro and newer games. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Looney Tunes (GB) Panel de Pon, Kirby Super Star, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, Battletoads, Duck Tales, Kirby's Dream Land 3, Donkey Kong Country, Ninja Gaiden, Mario Clash, Galactic Pinball, Kid Icarus, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Sonic the Hedgehog, Uniracers, Kirby's Dream Land 2, Mickey Mania, Toy Story... Good times.

On the other hand, there are plenty of modern games I hold in just as high regard, like Luigi's Mansion, Mario Sunshine, Prinny Can I Really Be the Hero?, Touch Detective, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, Super Mario Galaxy, LittleBigPlanet 2, Sonic Colours, Drill Dozer, Castlevania Aria of Sorrow, Pokemon Ranger, Tetris DS, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Mighty Flip Champs, Ghost Trick Phantom Detective, Golden Sun, Flower, and so on.

If the game is good, I'll play it. Doesn't really matter what year it's from. XD

The first console I ever had was a Vectrex. A friend of the family had bought it for his kids years ago, and when they grew older and lost interest he decided to give it to me. I spent many a joyous hour playing that machine. What's more, all the neighbor kids wanted to play it, even though they owned the "must-have" consoles of the day (Super NES and Sega Genesis). After finishing a circuit of Super Mario Kart or Donkey Kong Country, they'd practically beg to come over to my place and play some Minestorm or Armor Attack.

I also have many PC games that I used to play on my parents' old IBM 486 computer. I gravitated towards flight and space combat sims. I still contest that Tie Fighter is one of the best games ever made. Luckily I can play many of these games again on my laptop thanks to the wonders of DOSBox.

Having said that, I still enjoy more modern releases. I play Team Fortress 2 on an almost daily basis, and I've been doing marathon sessions of Skyrim the past few weeks. I don't particularly care what year a game was made as long as it's fun to play.

Still waiting for Legend of Dragoon to hit PSN...

It's almost been a full year.

=(

Anyways since my first console was the genesis i haven't played many games before that. But in the threads that have the "Your top 5..." 4 of mine usually consist of:

Shining Force 2
Phantasy Star 4
Ogre Battle 64. A Person of Lordly Caliber
Legend of Dragoon.
and Resident Evil 4.

4/5 of those are 10 years or older.

How old is retro nowadays? Sometimes I here people say that something from last year is retro, then I get confused and angry. Sometimes people die.

The oldest games I still routinely play are:

Pokemon Blue
FF VII
FF VIII
FF IX
TR II
TR III

Everything else (Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue, Bugs Bunny Lost in Time) are more occasional playings.

Oh, I know that feeling. Of course it's quite subjective, what you think is retro, and what not. My personal view is that a console turns retro at about 10 years of age. The 32/64 bit days are retro in my book. I would also count the Dreamcast there, due to it's technical level and short life-span.

Oh, of course not. I find old PC stuff great! Some of that awful FMV-stuff... Awww yeah! It was only last summer when I filmed a Let's Play of the original Fallout and finished Deus Ex... Some of my most priced posessions are original PC stuff. Original Heroes of Might and Magic 2 box with all the flip-flops... *Pride*

Sorry for the double-thread, guys! Let's make this one the one to be alive! ^_^

Unfortunately I am not a collector! I spend too much on new games to warrant spending it on retro's instead! I do have emulators though!
I only play retro RPG's. Unfortunately I do not have the skill or coordination for any of the fast paced shoot 'em ups, or side scrollers!

I have all the original Final Fantasies, as well as Chrono Trigger. I also have a NES with about 100 games on it, but most I played once, but didn't find them very fun! :(

I also download some of the old games released on the DS store to my 3DS. I have Zelda- Links Awakening, and Super Mario Land! Along with Rayman, they are my favourite Retro's! How old is considered Retro btw? I play Neverwinter Nights too, but does that count? I also play the PS1 at home, Jade Cacoon, and Spyro the Dragon and stuff like that! Its coming up 15 years soon! Do they count?

My earliest connection to gaming was a sears bought pong box. But even when we upgraded to the 2600 it wasn't quite good enough to hook me. That took a dark, smoke filled arcade and the vector graphics star wars game in the sit down cabinet. Gaming has never gotten better than that feeling.
