Shoda was once wild and untamed. Her harsh beauty only matched by the cruel and ferocious storms that were swept in when the Kami were not sated. And they had not been sated in a long, long time.
It was the Snake tribe, not the Lion or the Bear, that claimed the temples for themselves. Pitting the others against each other, they robbed Shoda of the Sun Goddess? blessing. In her most sacred temple of Ise, they lay waste to the balance of the world.
The others now fight eachother, small skirmishes at first. They suspected everyone else, the strong and the brave, the wise and the keen. All except the deceitful. There is no more order, no more peace. Just war, war, war.
Aire sighed, a sombre sound accompanied by the mist of warm breath in the morning. Winter?s chill had set in early, and the rain had dashed any hope of a fire.
He placed the book back down on the table, and turned. The small encampment was pitched low in the forest, rain beginning to pool in the centre. People were already starting to pack up what food and shelter they had left. Boards of canvas gave respite from the rain, a sack of rice could last you the month. But this is not how they used to live. Not how they should live.
The raid had come the night earlier. These were the only survivors. Saidi was one of the last villages left standing. The temple in the middle was carved of a beautiful wood, from a tree that would only grow in the far North. Aire suspected it had been razed along with the homes. Now he was greeted with only a handful of people, from all six tribes.
Hear me.
The low, thundering sound swept through the camp. No words were spoken, and the sound simply faded into the woods. But each person turned, weary eyed and drenched.
I am Aire. If you have nowhere else, follow.
Tucking the book under the table, Aire strode off.
Anyway, as I said. Let me know if you have an idea!

So I've been working on this idea for a while, finally put pen to paper. Figuratively. This is loosely based off the state of pre-imperial Japan, what with Shinto and everything. However, trust in this post and not the internet. Obviously there will be some minor [and major] changes, and so I would love for you to adhere to the set rules and lore.
Looking for interest, feedback, criticism, character sheets, dates, and pen pals.

It is the 7th Cycle (year) since the Consolidation. Shoda is split into two long, large islands. Look to Korea for a general idea. The two islands are split by a wide river. The Northern Island, Yosu, is dense in alpine forests. The Eastern part is home to a series of mountains, atop of which rests Ise, home of the Sun Godess. These mountains are To, Ra, and Kai. It is here that the Snake tribe now reside. The western forest thins out to rolling hills and farming villages, beset further by the sea. The Lion tribe were originally from here, and many of them still retain their homes.
The far North is extremely cold, the woods covered in snow and ice. The Owl tribe have built their community in the trees, safely away from the permafrost that lies on the ground. Small fires in nooks and crannies of branches provide minmal lighting, and heavy furs shield them from the frost.
The south of Yosu is low and flat rock. This inhospitable landscape provides home to no tribe, though traders, and therefore raiders, must pass through here to reach the south Island. This expanse of grey is known as Minso.
The southern Island somewhat more temperate and diverse than the north, and is known as Nota. Minso extends slightly after the river into the North tip of Nota, before giving way to rugged bushland. This small, warm area is home to the Fox tribe. To the East lies thick, dark rainforest. Hundreds of varieties of fruits hang here, invaluable to traders as currency. What is left of the Bear tribe roams here. The South and the West are covered in green, thick grass, with small rivers winding to and fro. It is here that the Wolf tribe have centralised power, hoping to push back the others from their homeland.
As far as any of the tribes know, the World ends when you go out to sea.

You are a survivor of the raid in Saidi, a small village bordering the northern foot of To. The camp is further North into the frost, though the rain has melted snow somewhat, and carries the chill into the forest. All you have are your possessions.
All tribes are human, though the Kami they are named after give them a certain?edge. There are specific physical and mental traits given to all tribes. However, deviations occur, and individuality must not be overlooked.
Lion - Able to rally others to their cause, they are fiercely noble and proud. The men are known to be short of temper, and the women equally spiteful. Their society is built around two things. Reverence of the Lion spirit, and fighting ability.Since the Consolidation, the Lion tribe has been split between both Islands, though the majority remain in the west of Yosu. People of the Lion tribe tend to be of average height, strong build and brown haired.
Owl - Wise and observant, these people tend not to fight so much as divert. The men are neutral and content, and the women friendly and cultured. Their society revolves around worship of the Owl spirit, and the pursuit of knowledge. They have advanced further than the other tribes in all but weaponry, their tree-houses fitted with steam and water systems. These people are tall, slim, with jet black hair, and have expert night vision. All people of the Owl tribe have pale skin.
Snake -Cunning and deceptive, the Snake tribe hold Ise hostage to the Kami. Though there are a few who have not submitted to their tribe, they are far and few. The men are known to be charismatic, sly, and incredibly quick thinking. The women are unmatched in beauty, and use this to achieve their goals. Their society is one of individuality. Nobody supports another. These people are tall, fit, and have a range of hair and skin colours. Their eyes are notoriously green.
Fox - Perhaps the most curious of all tribes, the Fox tribe are nomadic and inquisitive. They rarely speak, but are incredibly quick and agile, and are expert hunters of the game that lives in the woods. They tend to live isolated away from the affairs of other tribes, though they sell their goods to traders as they pass through. The men are friendly, quiet, and expert hunters. The women are quiet, but expert marksman, and can turn pelts into finery. All Fox tribe have deep, chestnut skin. They are rather short in comparison to other tribes, and have fiery red hair. Their society simply revolves around hunter-gatherer, which appeases the fox spirit.
Wolf - The largest of all tribes, the Wolf tribe are notoriously hateful of all other. Though not aggressive, they perceive any trespassing of another tribe as an attack, and will deal with accordingly. The Wolf is the largest perceivable threat to the Snake tribe, but is to pre-occupied with fighting other tribes to care. These people are vicious, untrusting, and terrifying. A wolf howl has scared off the best of every clan but the Lion. Their society revolves around family, strict worship of the Wolf spirit, and patrolling their border. The men are silent and brooding, and the women are vicious and protective. They have a deep sense of family and loyalty. These people are short, fit, olive skinned and black haired.
Bear -The smallest of all tribes, the Bear tribe are not exactly a tribe. Rather, wandering individuals who all pay respect to the great Bear spirit. These people are humble, moody and passive. A poked bear, however, will kill everything around them until they are literally spent. Thus, they wander alone. The men and women have no differences in personality, and all are tall, of average build, and deep set features. Their hair is never cut, and is mottled brown.

Just keep it to the time period. Nobody is wearing metal armour mind you. These are tribes, think leather and fur. Owls may have some finery though.
