*Some information will hint at or even reveal parts of the game*

Upon reading many other user reviews, I was reluctant to write my own, it length not likely to match those of more experienced writers. Putting that aside here it goes.

Dead Space was made by Electronic Arts and released on October 14th. Now, I have only played 2 hours worth of this game, having beaten the first two chapters. From my experiences I will give an idea of what the game is like. Put in humorous terms, you are a space engineer wearing a space armor with space power tools (or space weaponry) in space on a space ship fighting space zombies. None of this should be news, as EA seemed to make it very clear what the game was about and what you did in it.

First off, the game looks very pretty, indeed as is was intended. The particle effects are absolutely beautiful, the sheer amount of gore in this game is awesome, that being meant in most usages of the word. Not only is the gore and blood well done, but the level and character design is fantastic. It really is something to look at when you feel like really exploring everything; the little details and objects here and there really make a difference.

That being covered in enough detail, lets move on to the controls. It seems to me that the makers of this game found it a good idea to test their controls before releasing it, or at least choosing a control scheme that worked well in past games. Camera control is as it should be, and melee is pretty easy to grasp. It is a bit difficult read the panels that describe how to use weapons when you begin the game, as it appears the game was meant for much bigger screens than my television (the old clunky vacuum tube behemoth that it is). Just playing for a few minutes though, getting a handle on the controls should be just as effective without the help of explanation.

The story. Well, the game has a reasonable story as in, you're just an average guy on a mission to investigate a distress call, and repair the communications relay. It is thought out too, little pieces of audio and video recording can be found that add some depth to it. It makes sense and that definitely is a plus.

Your character. You aren't some crazy combat veteran or Rambo or some psychotic institution escapee juiced on crazy stimulant packs, nor are you a man with every gun known to man in his pockets. No. You utilize repair tools (or maybe some military weapons for those who...well, there is just not a single reason why you should ever buy). And you are indeed human, you will get hurt.

The game, though fun, seems pretty easy. I played on medium difficulty. Sure, I died a few times, but I was just goofing around and not putting a strong effort into it. When I did though, it was quite easy to complete objectives and kills enemies.

The enemy intelligence is decent. If you stand there or just kind of swing now and again, they will get you. But by all means, if you just keep swinging your fist and stomping your foot, you will likely kill them before they get you.

Your array of weapons can easy remain your basics throughout the entire game. you can swing your gun for melee, or stop your foot, or shoot them. Smashing them in the face with your fist is definitely fun. The standard basic gun is good, fun to toy with.

I think by this point, enough information is given. I found the game to be really fun, but not scary. It's more of an action game. There are just not the right elements for horror. Still, really fun, not the best game ever made. I recommend renting it, it will be worth the five or so dollars. Buying, maybe not so much.

Yay! Inglis is back.

Great review, though a few points. I know it's only preferance to the reviewer, but I like it when there is no 'The Story/The Game' subtitles. It feels like it breaks the flow a little. Maybe a bit more expansion (though it may be hard after only completing two levels) but otherwise it was funny and pretty good.

I liked this line a bit:

Decent review of the overall game mechanic, but I feel as though some of the key points about this game were missed.

The first is the fact that the longer you spend playing through the game, the more interesting the storyline becomes. It feels a little simple at the beginning, the basic chain of fix a problem find another, but soon enough you start running into some twists and turns that keep the game going, and the audio logs only help to enhance this. There is a massive aura of paranoia onboard this ghost ship, and everything you find around the ship shows you how intense things got.

Regarding the games difficulty level, the beginning is like a training ground. The game throws one enemy at you at a time, and you get a chance to learn to take them down, but later on numerous enemies come at once, and of different varieties that are all of different threat levels and take a different technique to destroy. There are also mini-game type encounters that require quick reaction and a bit of skill. The game does a great job at mixing up how you are moving about the ship and the type of stuff you are dealing with, so things don't get too stale.

The review also left out the new features the game brings to the third person survival horror game. The first two are the stasis and kinesis abilities. The first gives you the ability to slow enemies and objects down, which is used to solve puzzles and in combat. The second allows you to use what is in a nutshell, the force. You can grab objects from afar, pull them towards yourself, and shoot them back at people. You can also catch projectiles that are shot at you if they are large enough.

The next two are Zero-G and "air". There are certain parts of the game where you will enter a Zero Gravity zone. While in this zone, monsters can fly through the air at you, and you can jump to, and walk on walls. The Zero-G instances are a great twist, and work flawlessly, making you really feel like there is no gravity. There are also times in the game when you will enter a vacuum, meaning there is no longer air to breathe, and you have to survive on the 70 seconds of air you have in your suit. This helps to intensify the sense of urgency during certain encounters and events.

The last, and most under appreciated aspect of this game is the sound. The sound in this game is absolutely amazing. When you are playing with the lights off and the volume pumped up on a nice set of speakers, you literally can hear the room around you being torn apart. Some people will say this game isn't scary, but in the right setting and with the right mindset, it can give you one hell of a spook, and the awesome sound recordings help bring this spook level through the roof.

In closing, being a person who is usually not a big fan of single player games, it means a lot when I say Dead Space is really really good...

Hmm, I'll certainly have to give this game a good looking at. I needed a new single player timekiller and it seems Dead Space will do the trick.

Nice review. Easy to read, but it would have been better if you completed more of the game.
You got me slightly interested in the game.(not interested enough to go out and buy it, I need ore information for that, and even then it'll have to wait a while until I want to buy a new game)

One question though, for anyone that's played the game. What game can you compare the controls to?(I'd ask this on Gaming Discussion, but it's not really worth creating a new thread/topic for)

the controls are very similar to RE4. you run around with your gun down, then pulling the left trigger pulls it up, and you even have a blue laser sight like in RE4.

Good Review and I agree, it's just not that scary compared to the White Knuckle Terror of RE4 or the more subtle scares of the Silent Hill or Fatal Frame series's, though I found there were some chilling moments and the enemies in some cases are TRULY disturbing in design.
