for the past couple of weeks, ive been playing 10-20 hours of each battlefield's multiplayer (besides console battlefield 2 since the online is dead) to see how they all compare to each other and which ones are the best with the Battlefield 3 Beta finally out. Probably gonna be a long read so get yourself a snack and a cup of coffee.
Battlefield 1942: I'll be completely honest, BF1942 is my favorite game of all time, so i wanted to see if it was just nostalgia or it really deserves it. And i found that jumping out of your plane to shoot down the enemy plane behind you and then getting back in your plane is as awesome as ever and 1942 deserves my favorite game spot. Graphics look alright, however i can easy see each pixel in the fog of war. Gameplay still feels like a mix of Counterstrike and unreal tournament with vehicles mixed in. Infantry vs infantry and vehicle vs vehicle is as tense and skillful as ever, however vehicles tend to overpower infantry quite a bit. The sniper rifle still feels like the hardest sniping to learn in any game, and figuring out how to use the bazooka makes it the hardest weapon to learn in any game ever. Glad I was able to revisit this game after not playing it for a couple years.
Battlefield Vietnam: This is hands down my least favorite game in the entire series. The vehicles are completely overpowered, especially the helicopters, all guns take 2-3 shots to somebody, and characters models stick out like they were made for desert areas but are put into a jungle environment. Each class can switch between 2 weapons, which is sort of nice, but usually 1 of them is more powerful than the other in all situations. This game feels like it was trying to build into Battlefield 2 with the original 1942, and feels completely awful. Glad i can uninstall this game for the last time ever hopefully.
Battlefield 2: I'm not as big of fan as BF2 mainly because I started playing it and BF2142 around the same time and I preferred the latter. It changes nearly everything from the original 1942 and feels like a completely different game that just has vehicles placed in the maps. Thats not to say its bad, its just i felt disappointed when I started playing it. Vehicle combat is still tense, however dogfighting doesn't feel as nice, mainly since your using jets instead of WW2 fighters. Infantry combat however is usually just crouching or going prone when you see an enemy and spraying all your bullets until they die. Sniping is interesting with the the bullet drop mechanic and feels nice. Medic feels boring since your less fighting and more heal everybody and revive them. This is the first game in the series to introduce squads and I have to say it feels nice, since it promotes teamwork among players since they get points for completing objectives. I dont like the leveling system because the more powerful guns are for later on and seems to be there only so people will continue playing.
Battlefield 2142: As I said before I preferred this to BF2 mainly because of 2 reasons:1.The squad system is completely polished here and is near perfect if you ask me, if not perfect 2. The titan mode allows players to go from a huge wide open battlefield to close quarters combat, both of which I like. Vehicles are once again overpowered, with the mech walkers pretty much destroying anything in their way, unless its another walker. The helicopter jets are interesting since its the combination of the 2 vehicles, but nothing special. Still the same gameplay, just 4 classes instead of 6 and it seems to work much better since the assualt class has the medic items. Gameplay is almost completely the same as BF2, just with some future technology thrown in. I still hate the leveling system since the later weapons are completely unbalanced and breaks the game for anyone who doesn't use them.
Battlefield Heroes: The first free Battlefield game that plays like a third person TF2 with 3 classes, and that I hate. The commando sniper rifle is useless unless you pay for the better ones, which reminds me that you have to pay for the better weapons in the game so its more of a pay 2 win system game instead of free 2 play. Heavy class has the most ammo, making it the most powerful, but the slowest to move so its really boring. The assualt moves faster but has less ammo, but contains explosive barrels which makes it the best overall. Game does not feel balanced, vehicles are lackluster, and map design is not that great.
Battlefield Bad Company: The first introduction of the frostbite engine, which is the destrocto engine DICE uses now. I dont hate the engine, I just find myself destroying whatever is infront of me instead of playing the actual game. It feels like it was made to compete with CoD4, just that it has vehicles and a destrocto engine. Personally I dont like it. It feels rushed and not polished, and the map design is nothing special. Was mainly just a building block for BFBC2.
Battlefield 1943: When I heard that 1942 was going to be remade I went giddy like a school girl for 5 minutes, then I remembered it was only the island maps and was the frostbite engine, which is like getting a complete CGI version of the tatooine scenes from Star Wars A New Hope. You can't recreate the original 1942 with a new engine unless you used the same old one with new updated graphics. The island maps are good dont get me wrong, but the specialness of 1942 came from the Russia, Western Europe and Africa maps as well. The game feels like BFBC just set in WW2 pacific battles. Also Coral Sea is so bad I started crying at how they ruined it.
Battlefield Bad Company 2: This game feels like its a mixture of BF2 maps with Bad company gameplay that got improved, and it works out quite well. Gunplay is more exciting, however vehicles are boring to use so i would much rather just walk to each destination than actually use them, however the maps are so big I'm forced to use them anyway. Leveling system is still here and annoying me, graphics look pretty, and map design is pretty good. Nothing Special if you ask me.
Battlefield Free to play: The second free to play game of the Battlefield series, or should I say pay 2 win since the best weapons you have to pay for. Its pretty much a toned down version of BF2, with some influence from BFBC2 here and their. Gameplay is decent, just that registration feels off. classes feel somewhat unbalanced, since assualts do everything every other class does, just a little worse. Like BFBC2 nothing special here either.
Battlefield 3 Beta: Yes I know this is the beta, but you can tell not much is going to get changed since this is a Battlefield beta and is usually done to fix balance issues and to find bugs and maybe a few more vehicles placed here or there in Metro and Caspian Border. Metro is split into 2 parts, and outside park area, and a subway tunnel area. I hate the park area, feels like if you try to move out, you'll die instantly, so the best thing to do is just camp where you are. The subway area I like since it reminds me of a CoD4 custom map that emphasizes infantry fighting and means you have to check each corner and make sure you don't mistake an enemy for a part of the darkness. Caspian Border feels like the traditional wide open Battlefield maps, and reminds me of the Titan gameplay from 2142 where your trying to capture the missile silos. Everything feels polished and well made, just nothing really feels new, besides the graphics which are utterly gorgeous. Overall it seems it was only made to win the most polished modern FPS award, which it will probably win. You'll probably see me playing this game, however I will always be wishing for a game like 1942.
Bonus- Wake Island the Map: With BF3, Wake island will makes its 7th appearance into the Battlefield series and all I have to say is "really?". Dont get me wrong Wake is a good map, its just that the original 1942 offered such gems Bocage, Kursk, and El Alamein, and yet we get Wake island mainly because it was the first map that came with the 1942 demo. It makes me said that so many good maps have been ignored by the DICE and they just stick with the ones they with with their demos.
