The announcement of yet another Star Wars trilogy isn't a huge surprise, at least not for me. I figured this would be the case when Disney revealed they were going to crank out yearly Star Wars films until the heat death of the universe. I wasn't exactly thrilled with the prospect either...until I started reading the details.

A trilogy that's separate from the Skywalker saga, has entirely new characters and is set in a part of the galaxy that's never been explored in the lore? Well shit, that's pretty much what I've been wanting since day one of the Disney acquisition. I'm admittedly unfamiliar with Rian Johnson's work, but I know he's well-regarded by critics and the public alike. He must have impressed Lucasfilm a great deal indeed if they wanted him to head such a grand undertaking. especially when you consider that J.J. Abrams appeared to be their golden boy prior to this.

So yeah, a fourth Star Wars trilogy is on the way, and in spite of everything I find myself hopeful about its prospects.

Aside from Disney milking Star Wars, which, be honest, we all knew was going to happen deep down, I'm somewhat intrigued. I'm hoping for less space wizards and more big space battles. It's called Star Wars after all and not revolving around Force users was one of the things I like about Rogue One.

Also, please don't let everything be a thinly veiled expy of Original Trilogy stuff i.e. the adventures of Marc Ballfondler, Ham Salad, Lady Lay and Chewing Tobacco, a ragtag group of Freedom Fighter trying to bring down The Sovereignty, which has wedge-shaped space ships called Solar Annihilators and a big scary masked dude called Nacht Pater.

Come on Disney, you could at least pretend you're not going to milk Star Wars dry. I know, bantha milk is nice, tasty, and blue's my favorite colour,* but there comes a time when I want something other than milk. Kathleen Kennedy already indirectly confirmed that Rey and Finn survive post-Episode IX, so even if this is some separate trilogy, I'm already fatigued. Maybe if the films surpass Rogue One and TFA, but for me, I think Last Jedi is going to be make or break.

*Yes, blue is my favorite colour, and always has been. Even before I watched Monty Python.

Star Wars was being "milked" from the very beginning and I find it a bit silly to complain about it. Spaceballs was making fun of that since before the prequel trilogy was made.

Star Wars always was a franchise. It always was merchandise driven. It always was a brand. It's not like they're defiling some work of great artistic integrity. They aren't making a a Sunset Boulevard Expanded Universe. They aren't making a Seventh Seal Sequel trilogy. It makes very little difference if they pay someone to churn out Expanded Universe novels or if they just hand them a budget to make actual movies because they can afford it and still make a profit.

They're continuing a space adventure serial based on watered down samurai movies and 50s dime novels. Of all the utter bullshit that had the Star Wars name to it there are people who think this is disrespectful? Get real.

Disney and any Star Wars fan who openly admits to wanting to actually see a Boba Fett or Obi-Wan movie can suck my dick. All that does is send Disney the message: "Oh yes Disney! I'd quite like some more of those 40-year old characters and concepts, thank you! No new stuff please, I want to stay in my bubble of nostalgia for all eternity. No need to do anything fresh or interesting."

OT: If those film concepts hold true, then I'm fine with it. Ditch absolutely everything we've seen before. No more scrappy underdogs from desert planets, jedi, star destroyers, planet-sized superweapons, lightsabers, the Force or oppressive galaxy-spanning dictatorships. Give us space pirates, or a smuggler who actually smuggles shit. Show us the workings of the galactic high society through someone more exciting than a bucket of dried paint. Show space exploration on the far fringes. Give us genuinely alien aliens and worlds. Does the SW universe have any religions?

I heard this and I just sighed. It just made me tired. I used to love Star Wars, and back in the day, whenever a new book was announced, I went nuts. When Disney announced a new trilogy (the first one) I was excited, but I already had the nagging fear that I would burn out.
And hearing that they're already working on a new trilogy, when the current one isn't even finished and they're still struggling with the Han Solo movie--just makes me think of all the years in the future. It wears me out. How much am I going to have to keep current on, when the timeline that we're currently in isn't even fleshed out yet? It's just...too much.

Not sure about the new lore, but in the Expanded Universe there were a few. One that pops into my mind is the Yuuzhan Vong. They were religious fanatics.

So here's something for all you guys to ponder. The Star Wars EU has had SO many authors crank out title after title for it and I don't recall anyone ever saying, "Stop. We don't need anymore books in the EU." But when Disney starts giving the go ahead for a bunch of films for Star Wars, suddenly it's milking the franchise. And we're not even talking about all the Star Wars games that were made before Disney came along either.

So here's something for all you guys to ponder. The Star Wars EU has had SO many authors crank out title after title for it and I don't recall anyone ever saying, "Stop. We don't need anymore books in the EU." But when Disney starts giving the go ahead for a bunch of films for Star Wars, suddenly it's milking the franchise. And we're not even talking about all the Star Wars games that were made before Disney came along either.

It's a fair question. But speaking personally, here's my response:

1) There was a clear divide between the EU and films. The films, 3-6 of them (depending on how you felt) could stand on their own. There was no need to continue from Return of the Jedi. That said, if you did want post-Jedi stuff, the EU was there for you. My EU stuff was primarily prequel era (in that I found it the more interesting setting), but even that aside, Star Wars was in a good position to have it both ways.

2) The EU was nuked by Disney for its new films. That's a pretty bitter pill to swallow. It's not the only franchise that's had this kind of thing done to it, but, yeah. If the EU was 'milking' the old films, those films still existed. The new milking is predicated on taking the old cows round back and shooting them before presenting us with new cows and expecting us to love them just as much.

3) The new EU aside, I can't call either TFA or Rogue One good films. The EU, on the other hand, gave me plenty of stuff I would call good. Also, if they're both milking, there's something far more cynical about TFA than the EU, as TFA sets up a vague status quo (New Republic), but has effectively reverted to an old status quo by the film's end (Empire = First Order, Rebellion = Resistance). TFA is a giant reset button at the end of the day.

So, in answer, both the EU and Disney-era Star Wars 'milked' the franchise, but the milking Disney has been doing has so far been far more cynical, and of lower quality (at least for me personally).

The book is fantastic and we could use a little more 'everyman jedi'.

Sure, part of it would have to be reworked because...this version of Luke is a failure, but the bones to a great film are still there.

Given that they're planning to put out a movie every year, with "A Star Wars Story" every other year, there's clearly a gap. Wonder what it's going to be? Anyway, yeah, they're probably doing pre-production planning for a decade out, so that's not unrealistic at all.
