As an American I had to read that headline 4 times to make sure I wasn't misreading it. As I read the article it was as though I was in bizarro-land. A sentiment like that makes me feel like Germany would be a great place to live.

Full story from BBC: Rich Germans demand higher taxes. [http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8321967.stm]

What is the point in being rich when you live in a shit hole? Public services are an essential part of a functioning society.

No it wasn't. I edited the post for clarification. I wasn't talking about Germany, but about the philosophy of wanting to contribute more to make your environment better and the people who live along side you more comfortable so that your own quality of life would improve as a result.

What's so strange about it? Being very rich can lead to a guilty feeling towards those who haven't been as lucky as you. Besides, if you have got plenty of money anyway you won't miss a few percent of it. If I were a rich German I'd probably sign this as well.

Well, it makes sense. People'll complain about a tax rise and then complain about awful public services. You can't have your cake and eat it.

Heh, it's called solidarity. I like this news.
Especially the education system needs serious improved/repair.
For one, get rid of tuition fees again!

Well, I guess it's good if someone wants higher taxes aslong as people who can't afford higher taxes don't have to pay higher...maybe if they raise the taxes for the rich they can lower the taxes of other people if there is a big problem in that area or something.

Yep.

If someone is earning 20000 a year I can see why them might want 40000.

If someone is earning 500000 a year is there really a point in having any more?

And then you get arse holes like Tracey Emin [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracey_Emin] saying she will leave Britain if tax is raised for the wealthy.

Good for the Germans.

Haven't they heard of charity? What a bunch of idiots. Surely they are clever enough to realise that private enterprise (invest or give money to charity) will always achieve far more than the beaurcratic meddlings of the government. Sigh, I dispair of the this economically retarted world.

ps. Yes, I am the only Libertarian in the whole of Scotland.

There are no charitable institutions that give money towards unemployed people, one parent families, general health services, law and order etc.

Ayn Rand would be very confused.
Let's add the republican party to the list of confused people.

Really, as an American, I find this very unexpected, but I have cuddly_tomato's feelings on the issue.

A nice reminder that not all rich people are self-centered greedy leeches. Bravo to them.
