So, the other day I walked in and saw my little sister was watching iCarly (yes, I know the show sucks, but stick with me, this isn't a rant about that), when I noticed that I'd seen the plot for that episode somewhere before. Now, that's a bit hypocritical considering they did an episode against ripping off other peoples ideas, but that's not what got to me. What got to me was that iCarly took the plot of Misery by Stephen King and not only made it terrible, but gave no credit to King(being the fan of the terrifing genius that I am). And then I looked back and realized alot of things that I've seen or read are rip-offs of other things where the original is usually better than the rip-off.

Has anyone else ever had this happen to you before?

P.S. Everybody knows that Avatar did that with Dancing With Wolves so no need to bring that up.

Nothing has been original for several years. Most, if not all stories, follow a basic plot that has been done before. Same goes for every video game and book. It's really difficult to make an interesting story that has yet to be done before.

It's easier to recycle other ideas, than to be imaginative. People don't like things that are different, it would probably cause WWIII if a show did something completely out of this world.

My mum watches soap operas (British) and she said they just keep using old ideas from a time where the new fans won't remember.
Oh, a guy with the accent is a villain? Did that in 1989. A car crash right before a wedding? that happened 8 years ago, and so on.

I dont care if people rip-off other shows and whatnot..

If you dont like it, you dont need to watch it.. And there is also the possibility that they might actually make it better than the original so..

If people did not rip each other off at times, how many new shows and movies would come out every year?? Not many!

So what did the Human Centipede rip-off?
Centipedes, of course. They were there first, humanity!

*Ahem*

Originality was fairly much dead decades ago. Hollywood is just basically the same stories in their respective genre categories with slight narrative differences and a new title now, same with video gaming or really any media you see today. (And no, we do NOT acknowledge the existence of the poison to the societal mind of today in which is "Reality T.V.")

But of course, this hardly makes these avenues any less entertaining. Well, a decent majority of them are still such, at least..

Well, Rashomon has been ripped off so many times people don't even seem to know it's a rip-off anymore. (It's a Kurosawa movie about several people giving their version of a series of events.)

Well I do side with the 'there's no such thing as a totally original story' camp but I think that there's another level to it. The basics are important but more then that the devil really is in the details and telling an old story can be good if it's well... skilfully told.

Compare the opening of this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EooJU5UMXSg].

Compare the chorus of this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnUxeZvNwnM].

And I swear this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0GdDLcqM1E&feature=related]. I can barely notice the difference between the two.
