[Ive been keeping up on this thread where this guy got mugged and was torn on whether or not he was a coward. That got me thinking about muggings and inspired this thread. So theres that, before anybody just thinks the worlds gone to hell all at once.]

Well, it all started 2 years ago. I asked this lovely young lady out to a movie on the off chance that she'd be disoriented enough by my miasma of cologne to mistake me for an attractive man, and she responded positively. Now, this was my first date in highschool, so I was going nuts thinking of all the ways I could impress her. I quickly realized that she wouldnt be impressed by my Tekken skillz, so I settled on just trying to be a charming guy.

So later that night, after the movie, me and my lady friend are walking home [the theater was within walking distance of her house, and I took a bus] and the night was going great. She laughed at my jokes, blushed at my compliments and didnt mace me. All is well when she thinks it would be a grand idea to save time by cutting through the local park. At 12 am. In Michigan.

Me, being the slack jawed imbicile I am, agreed without protest. While we're enjoying our walk through the park, two black dudes in black hoodies [well, one was actually more of a dirty orange, but the point is that it was darkly colored] stepped out in front of me and demanded money. Now, I have always been a man who enjoys his bones unbroken, so I was prepared to hand over anything they wanted.

Now at this point, I feel the need to justify my decision by pointing out the fact that there was, in fact, TWO violent looking men in front of me who look like they could beat me within an inch of my life even if I didnt have any money. Plus, there was the possibility of them being armed, which later proved to be true.

Anyways, as Im reaching into my pocket, they look at my lady friend and also demand she turn out her pockets. Something inside of me clicked. Maybe it was chivelry, maybe it was bravery, maybe it was stupidity, but something said 'Nows your chance to totally impress this girl. Maybe I could try this heroism thing everybody has been going on about.' So I put my wallet in left hand and held it out infront of me.

I was terrified, of course. I'll even admidt to tearing up a little [it was an emotionally charged moment, okay?!?]. I knew that no good can come from this, but the thought that the entire neighborhood would know that I let my shiny new girlfriend get robbed on our first date and I just rolled over didnt feel right. So as he reaches out to take my wallet, I close my eyes real tight, and swing as hard as I could with my right fist.

It felt awesome. My first thought was 'FUCK YEAH! That was some Jet Lee shit right there! That wasnt so hard! In fact, I think Ill keep going! Im going to make it a combo and set this guy in his place! Im going to air juggle his ***** ass! Hell I bet that-'

That silence was the sound of my thoughts getting cut short by a fucking box cutter to the leg which the second hoodlum [who I had completely forgotten about whilst fantasizing] had supplied with the speed of a doped up UPS employee. This was followed immediately by several boots to my abdomin, and a few solid punches to the face. Girlfriend is no where to be found [she had ran home while I was valiantly attacking the muggers fist with my face], my wallet is gone, Im short exactly 1 ego and I was leaking fluids from my leg that I was pretty sure were important.

Oh and she didnt call the cops either. I walked to a nearby house and asked to use the phone to call for a ride home. Only after I got home and then to a hospital did I remember to call the police. There wasnt enough for them to go on, so the dudes were never caught, and I felt like a fucking moron for 3 weeks while my stitches healed [it was a little box cutter and, admittedly, didnt do much physical damage, but it still hurt like a *****], but thats not the point.

The question is, if your lover was being robbed and you were hopelessly out numbered, what would you do? Would you comply, and apologize later? or would you defend them?

If you are being mugged: give up everything you got without arguement. As soon as they are gone try and contact the police. They could just as easily have killed you. You got lucky. Don't be a hero. The girl will appreciate it that it was a dangerous situation and you got her out of it safely.

Seriously, if that happened to me, the second they asked for my money, I'd go into a bloodthirsty rage, regardless of what happened to me, I'd be swinging until either I fall, or the mugger falls, as long as my wallet or personal possessions are safe, I'll be happy.

There are a few things which make me angry beyond control. The idea of somebody mugging me is one of them, and it's one of those things that makes me eternally frustrated at the weapon carrying laws here - otherwise, I'd be carrying a brace of military knives around with me at all times, along with stab-proof armour for anywhere where I could fit it. I think in a circumstance where I was being mugged, whether or not there was anybody with me, I'd flip out and try everything I could do to kill the people attacking me. As far as I'm concerned, anybody who mugs anybody ever deserves the most painful death imaginable, and if I somehow got enough of the upper hand, I'd be gouging out their eyes, cutting their fingers and thumbs off one at a time and trying to break all of their limbs irreversibly.

This would be one of those reasons why I don't go out. It would also be a reason why I don't have a romantic partner. I'm also investigating the idea of booby-trapping my property when I get my own house, such that it would kill an invader.
wouldnt doing all that make you as bad if not worse than the mugger?

Everybody says they would go and fight but I doubt most would I know even with 14 years of fighting experiance I would certainly take a few moments to assess the situation determine my standing. I will likely still carry some peppy spray with me call it girly if you want its quick easy and perfectly legal not to mention its hard for sombody to attack you when there face is burning with pain. Honestly if I ever got held up by a bum I would prolly help them out just because they seriously need some help.

SHE DIDN'T CALL THE POLICE!?

WHAT THE SHIT IS WRONG WITH HER!? I AM SO ANGRY RIGHT NOW!

Stupid - useless - asshole - hate!

OT: I'm in no condition to fight a puppy, but if I was fit, healthy, and armed, I'd give it a go, provided there were less than five of them.

As things stand, not a chance.

The important thing is that you got HER out of there (or provided her an opportunity to run...and not call the cops). Consequences be damned if someone is trying to take away something you like (and I LOVE money). I probably would have fought the two as well. Look at it this way, had you not fought, would you have regretted it? Would it continue to be that nagging 'what if' that lingers in the back of your mind and causes you to second guess yourself at every future turn?
No. Because you fought.
Don't have regrets, not ever.

Of course I would just give it up. It's only money. They may be desperate enough to kill for money or mobile phones, but I'm certainly not stupid enough to get myself or my partner hurt by putting my life on the line for a few measly dollars.

They can have it.

Me having a lover? In all seriousness, no, I'm a selfish bastard, if she wants to die over some belongings she can bloody well do it herself.

Also, at OP, despite it looking like a wall of text to me, it was well written, amusing and enjoyable to read (not enjoying you getting owned of course, just... you know what I mean), though your GF not calling the police? Dick move, right there.

Wow, what a *****. She should have called at least someone to let them know.

It depends on the situation. If they're armed with something that is going to cause irreparable damage, I'd comply. Otherwise, the robber is fair game.

If my girlfriend and I (ignoring the fact that I don't have one) were being mugged, then I wouldn't hand anything over. There's no way I'd ever hold up in a fight, but I'd never allow them to mug me purely out of principle. I'd stand up for myself out of principle, even though I know that it wouldn't help.

With another person the issue becomes a bit more complicated for me though, because I might be putting them at risk through my own principles, so I'd either make sure that they could get away before the fight, or just do whatever I had to do to keep them safe if there was no way that he/she could escape.

We have insurance, give them everything on us and stand between her and them while they were robbing us.

It's not a big deal. If I was on my own I'd consider fighting back but it's not really worth it as, like I said, I have insurance.

I'd advice against going out to dark places then.
Unless you want to end up dead.

OT: I'd give them what they wanted.(as long as they don't hurt the girl)

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but what you did was actually stupid and selfish. That box cutter could have easily been a switchblade or a gun. The best thing to do in those situations is to give them what they want and keep the situation calm. At that point, it didn't look like they were going to hurt you. You just threw fuel on the fire, and drastically increased the possibility of you AND your girl getting hurt, killed, or worse.

In that situation, I'd do what is safest. Which means decking the person who is threatening me when it looks like things are going to be okay. Bravado and overconfidence are two things I do not plan on getting grievously injured or dying from.

Oh, and as everyone else has said, she should have called the cops. I mean, what the hell did she do? Run home and pray you weren't dead? Did she plan on going back after sunrise to look for your remains? I think you can get criminally charged for not reporting something like that.

Hahaha, guys, I know what I did was retarded and I was lucky that I left with my life. I was young, kind of arrogent and had never been in a fight before in my life. I know I had no business being there. My point that has been buried in that wall of text, is that I've been taught youre supposed to protect women and my reputation would have been damaged beyond repair otherwise. I want to know what YOU guys would do.

I think that by saying what you did was stupid, they are also implying that they would not do the same themselves. Otherwise they wouldn't be calling it stupid :p

I say screw the reputation. If the people you surround yourself with would judge you THAT harshly just for trying to stay alive, I say you need to get away from those assholes and find some better friends. You sure as hell can't improve your reputation if you're dead. The best way to have protected her was to have kept the situation calm. I'm sure you knew that, so that means you didn't do it to protect her. You did it to look like a man.

And again, she should have called the police. I mean, a thousand times over. What the fuck was wrong with her?
