Hi, I was cycling home in London the other day when I collided with a car. I won't go into the details but it was my fault so when the driver rung me today, we met up and he produced an invoice with the damage costs. I paid him the amount and we parted ways.

Now the only thing is that we both signed a letter saying what had been paid and received. However I only noticed on the way home that I had signed the 'I received this amount bit' and he had paid the 'I paid this amount bit'.

So long story short, I was just wondering if that could come back and bite me in the ass and also whether I was right to pay up because a lot of people are in my ear saying 'oh take him to court etc'?

If you have the letter and you both were responsible adults who handled it well (ei. not taking each other to court for extreme minor reasons that would get laughed out, even in my country's petty court system), don't think a simple mistake like that will bite you. The car taken to the repair shop was obviously his and the repair shop knows he was the one, whom on the date the repairs were done, was the one to drop it off. So unless you also own a car that he later crashes into, there shouldn't even be a legal mix up. And you have the letter proving money did change hands because of a collision.

If it really bothers you, call him back to explain. If you both agree to a new letter, just keep the old one until it's certain the new one is legitimate and accurate. Or, wait and see if he calls back asking what line he signed, and then see if he wants to make a new one.
