Just saw a video on IGN about pro mode Rockband 3 keyboard and I'm surprised. At last, someone has said this isn't going to help you learn piano and that in fact if anything it will hinder people really wanting to learn by installing bad habbits.

This probably wont rock Harmonix world much but it does mean if their end game is to try and aide people in learning real instruments they have some work to do on the keyboard side.

Short of supplying a larger number of keys and an expert-pro mode that actually uses the bass notes as well as full chords rather than 2 keys as displayed in that video and comes with all the exercises that those of us who can play piano do how can they help aspiring pianists though?

On a side note, what disturbs me though is that they keep saying 2 octaves is half size, that's 16 keys a piano is 88 keys and a keyboard around 60. Perhaps they're comparing it to children's keyboards.

I don't play the piano, but I'd like to. I was kind of hoping Rock Band might help with that, as I enjoy a more interactive environment to learn, so it's good to know it will actually hinder you but instilling bad habits.

I really don't know where I stand with this game (or Guitar Hero for that matter). I've always enjoyed playing a few of my favourite songs, even if I knew I wasn't playing them the same way I would in real life, but... I think I've grown rather tired of 'em.

Maybe it's just time for me to quit hoping, and just sit down and teach myself the damn guitar. Eventually, get some lessons for the piano.

Of course, it's entirely possible that these kinds of games are not made as educational tools, but rather so the layman can have fun in a completely different kind of way to the legions of cover based shooters and sandbox worlds the industry is saturated with these days...

Just a thought.
