With the definitive edition of Rome 2 being released, more fixes and additions are being made.

For people who've played Rome 2 and the Total war series in general, what do you think of this. Have you downloaded the beta? What are your final thoughts of the game as a whole in comparision to other total war games?

I quite like the "original", if you will, and while I haven't downloaded the beta I most certainly will return to the game once it is out. I have played Total War games since the first game way back when. As a whole, most have been really good and I think CA have done some sterling work (with a couple of hick ups along the way) throughout the years.

FOR THE EMPEROR!

I have played all the TW games and to be honest I'm little bored of them going over the same ground all the time. I wish they do something a little different. There are 1000s of years of history that idea of armies fighting on a single battlefield are suitable for but they just cycle round the same 3 settings.

That's it? A campaign pack? I thought they'd finally realized their colossal blunder and put back in all the RPG and character building elements they stripped out since Medieval 2.

Bleargh.

I think they mentioned in one of the rally points that civil war is no longer inevitable and that politics is now actually a thing that works in the game.

Seeing as this is Total War and not Europa Universalis, there's no way the politics system is going to actually be interesting. One of my main issues with Rome II is with the politics system; it feels like a tacked on afterthought and plays like a mod versus an actual gameplay feature (and not even a good mod at that).

Also, does anyone know if this DLC is going to be free? If it supposedly fixes big issues with the game it'll be pretty pathetic if you have to pay money to (partially) fix the game.

I'm most excited about the unit rebalances. I've seen a couple of lets plays with the beta and it looks like spearmen can survive a lot longer, skirmishers are more useful, and units aren't going to break as quick.

I definitely appreciate CAs attention to this game. I got it at launch and it almost feels like a different game at this point.

If you have the original game the new version will be free.

while it was a huge step back for the series and frankly the biggest screw up CA have ever made with the total war series they are keeping there word of constant patches and this free update is a worthy edition for us players who already have it.

*EDIT*
spent the last few hours trying out the beta patch of it.
- lots of brand new building chains, so your cities and towns no longer are identical.
- on map resources have a purpose at least as far as iron is concerned, its a requirement for a building
- rebalanced the temple of mars so you cant start with extra experienced legionaries
- small thing but hastati and principes (havent check legionaries yet) now throw pilum on the defence rather than just when attacking
- generals get extra gravitas when you choose traits for them

hard to properly describe but the game has a different feel to it now with this patch than it did before. so much so im actually starting to enjoy it now

Nothing short of moving to a new engine and completely overhauling the entire game will make it even remotely fun, so no, as a long time fan of the series I will not be taking the time to play this new version.
