Rose Reviews: Sailor Moon Crystal

Episodes 1 and 2

Okay, in case you don't already know, I am a huge fan of the original Sailor Moon. I own the Japanese language DVDs (the limited edition ones) and have been looking forward to the release of Sailor Moon Crystal - a remake of the original Sailor Moon based more heavily on the manga and with many returning voice actors - but I have also avoided following details concerning the production or information about the show to avoid spoilers (aside from voice actor info).

Anyway, yesterday, I saw that the first two episodes of Crystal were up on Hulu, so I had to watch.

Act 1: Usagi

I'm not going to do a point by point review for one very important reason - this episode follows the beats of the original episode 1 almost exactly, with only a few interesting deviations. It is those deviations that I will focus on.

First up, the show is making no pretensions about the audience not already knowing the plot. Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion embrace in the very first scene. Awesome.

We move from that into the normal "Usagi is late" bit - again, it is pretty much identical to the original episode 1 so I won't belabor it. One thing - Usagi's mom tells her to be more like Sailor V, who is in the news again. Neat!

I should probably take a moment to comment on the opening credits. The song is okay - I honestly wasn't paying much attention since the video had 100% of my brain cells locked in. There's a lot of focus on the inner senshi, of course, and Mamoru appears to wear glasses now. Also, the inners seem to have had some serious upgrades to their attacks.

Anyway, back to the episode, where in a very awesome scene, Jadeite summons up the Youma for the episode and tells it to go find the Legendary Silver Crystal. Interesting. Particularly since the Youma later talks about needing energy. Hm.

Usagi meets Luna, is late for school, stands in the hallway. We're introduced to Naru and Umino. We are not introduced to Usagi's two other friends who were pretty much forgotten after the first few episodes of the original series anyway. One difference - while one of the friends is the same as the original, the other one is very different. Hm.

On to the Jewelry store. There's no fight, but it is a bit of a feeding frenzy. Naru's mom is, of course, possessed, but less obvious about it this time. Usagi has a quiet, introspective moment - which is really different. She still throws her test -

- into Tuxedo Mask. Not Mamoru, fucking Tuxedo Mask walking around in broad daylight. She even comments on him being weird for wearing a Tuxedo.

I don't much care for the translation of "bump head" for odango atama. Dumpling head or meatball head make more sense than "bump".

Anyway, on to the Sailor V video game bit. Usagi lingers over the image of Sailor V as if she recognizes her, but can't remember from where - a very nice, subtle touch. Awesome!

Usagi introduces the arcade-worker guy whose name I still can never remember (he's just too damn dull in all versions for me to be bothered) and has a staring contest with Luna. Weird.

Yada yada, yelled at about test scores, yada. Shingo makes a brief appearance so we remember he exists.

Tuxedo Mask stalks the jewelry store while Naru's possessed mom takes a moment to explain that she is gathering energy while seeking the Legendary Silver Crystal - which isn't in Naru's Mom's jewelry store, so the day has been a bust. Okay, that explains my earlier confusion - she's doing both plotlines. Naru walks in on evil mom and - eye catch.

Back from the commercial break, Usagi has an unexpected dream! She's on the moon, being led around by Prince Endymion. A monster appears - and then Sailor V appears! ... and then we're in the Sailor V video game, where Usagi has to rescue Luna.

... wow. Usagi's subconscious is a weird place.

Anyway, on to the Luna revealing she can talk and providing exposition bit. So far so standard. And we get to the new transformation sequence.

It is... hard to describe.

It's awesome. The computer aided animation is weirdly realistic (while still anime) - almost pushing uncanny valley at a few points. It's a hair disturbing - one second I'm marveling at the most beautiful Sailor Moon transformation ever, and the other I'm shaken out of it by one of those uncanny valley moments.

So yeah. Three parts awesome, one part weird.

On the costume, she is wearing the usual season 1 broach with some minor modifications, and she has the Grail hair clips (retroactively, one assumes) that she doesn't gain in the original anime until season 3. Everything else looks pretty much like her normal season 1 outfit.

Anyway, back to the usual script - Usagi gets the Naru alarm (I wish I was kidding), Naru's mom threatens her. One interesting difference is that we get to see Tuxedo Mask hiding in the window awaiting his cue.

Usagi has a better time remembering her lines this time. The new "in the name of the moon, I will punish you" is pretty neat.

The battle goes exactly as it did in the original, except that the zombie women have to come in from elsewhere - all the way up to Sailor Moon stunning the enemies and Tuxedo Mask telling her to use her tiara. The new tiara looks pretty impressive.

Tuxedo Mask mention the Legendary Silver Crystal before departing this time, setting that up right from the start. Very nice.

Oh, and yes, Tuxedo Mask is wearing the EXACT SAME OUTFIT as earlier. Except now he has a hat and a very thin mask instead of glasses. The glasses covered MORE of his face than the mask does.

**shrugs in confusion**

Anyway, Jadeite talks to himself. The next day, Naru gushes about her run-in with a Sailor Senshi. Usagi has a quiet moment. And AMI walks by, foreshadowing the next episode.

End credits - once again, we're back to Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion. The song is okay - about as good as any Sailor Moon ending credits.

Final Thoughts: So far so standard. The first episode of the anime followed the first manga fairly closely, so that isn't really a surprise. We'll see how things go differently in Act 2...

But first, an add for the BluRay release of the original uncut Sailor Moon series. FUCK YEAH! Shut up and take my money already, etc.

Act 2: Sailor Mercury

We open on Ami doing her impression of Homura from the first episode of Madoka. Which is funny, since Homura was doing her impression of Ami - oh god, we've gone recursive!

AMI IS WEARING GLASSES AGAIN!!!!!

Yes, I find that very exciting. Ami looks awesome in glasses. Also, Ami has her much more attractive longer hair-do. Have I said "fuck yeah" lately? No? Well, fuck yeah! I always hated that super-short cut that the original anime gave her until later seasons.

Ami spends a little time being lonely and watching Usagi with her friends. And opening credits.

Ah, we finally meet Queen Beryl. Neat. Apparently they're combining the Legendary Silver Crystal plot and the Energy Gathering plot into the same thing. Also, the Dark Kingdom looks WAY MORE AWESOME now - it has cloisters. As any Doctor Who fans knows, Cloisters make anything better. Jadeite gets yelled at and then summons up another Youma in the neat way he did the first episode. Cool.

Back to standard - Luna has moved in and tells Usagi that this Sailor Moon gig is long term. Also the "find the Princess" plotline gets its start. Luna says she already has her eye on someone as a possible senshi, then looks away in... sadness? Interesting.

Also interesting is that the arcade no longer contains the Cat Computers. Instead, Luna appears to be... using a Tardis. Or, at least, an extra-dimensional space that looks kind of like the Tardis console room.

Actually, the Sailor Senshi being Time Lords would kind of explain a few things....

Ahem.

Anyway... back to the episode. We get back to the usual "introduce Ami" bit here she has the best test scores and attends Crystal Seminar, a fancy (and evil) cram school. Not to be confused with Mugen Academy, the evil school from season 3. Apparently the cram school is near the arcade and very expensive. Ami overhears people talking about her being a stone cold ***** and leaves in a huff.

-- and then pets Luna, which instantly convinces Usagi that Ami is nice. Which she, of course, is. Cute awkwardness ensues until Ami hands Luna back to Usagi - when Ami has a flashback to the Moon Kingdom! Ami looks confused and a little frightened... Usagi, meanwhile, tries to befriend her in an attempt to get help studying. And thus, on to the arcade (because that's how Usagi's brain works).

Motoki. That's arcade guy's name. I'm sure I'll forget again soon enough.

Ami is good at the Sailor V game... for some reason. **shrug** That bit never made sense to me in any version. Anyway, the game spits out Ami's transformation pen - and then Usagi's disguise pen. Again, so far, so standard. However, rather than rushing off late, Ami and Usagi actually talk a bit and develop their friendship in a comparatively realistic fashion. Awesome! I like the greater attention to characterization and relationships in this version.

Oh, and the brain-washing floppy disk has been upgraded to a brain-washing CD rom. ^^;;

Eye catch.

Kuri-chan is the new friend. She is randomly muttering numbers when we return from commercial (while Usagi, Naru, and long-haired friend from the original series hang out). Usagi bumps into Ami in the library and invites her out for ice-cream.

OH! And UNLIKE the original, we actually see the result of the brain-washing! When Usagi invites Ami out, Ami starts to accept, but then she has a sudden flash of the Youma teacher telling her that she has to study more. She goes glass-eyed and turns Usagi down, saying she needs to leave. Fortunately, she forgets her evil CD rom.

Later, Usagi walks past the Crystal Seminar and is handed a flyer (by the Youma teacher) advertising discounts for the program and featuring a photo of Ami and the evil disk. Usagi throws the flyer over her shoulder - and hits Mamoru again. AND HE'S STILL WEARING HIS TUXEDO! Again, the glasses cover more of his face than his mask. How is she not recognizing the fact that he's wearing the exact same Tuxedo as Tuxedo Mask?

Oh, never mind. Usagi tries using Ami's CD rom and it turns out to be evil, just like in the original version. Usagi heads out to investigate.

And we get our first use of the disguise pen. She transforms into a... nurse, I guess? She then gets past the guards by claiming that she's there responding to a medical emergency. Without an ambulance? Ah well, this is better than the original version where she disguises herself to get past an unguarded door. This time, at least, she needs to bullshit past guards.

This time, instead of leading a class, Ami has been taken to a special room where she has been given a new, special disk. Apparently the Dark Kingdom wants to tap her awesome brain, so they're stepping up her brain washing. While Ami is working, the Youma picks up her transformation pen and wonders what it is.

Cue a mental flashback (audio only) to that friendship-developing conversation I mentioned earlier. Ami resists the brain washing due to her friendship - particularly when the Youma throws away her pen.

And, just then, Usagi bursts into the room. Luna provides a distraction while Ami recovers her pen. Usagi then tells the Youma how they know all about her evil plans. Cue Sailor Moon transformation.

... I like it better the second time. The weird uncanny valley is still there, but it isn't as distracting once I expect it.

The battle begins pretty much as it did before, except with better special effects - the papers the Youma throws actually look like a threat rather than a bad Read or Die rip-off (which is odd since Sailor Moon came first).

Which brings us to Ami's transformation.

... which gave me literal chills. Ami's transformation is almost identical to her transformation in the original series, except with a massive graphical upgrade. It has none of the weird uncanny valley moments, and thus is pure awesome.

I think the problem with Usagi's transformation is that she occasionally bends in unlikely fashions that make her obviously CG, whereas Ami follows the motions of her original animated version more closely, and thus she never seems to be made of CG rubber.

Anyway, this brings us to Ami's part in the battle. And... Mercury Aqua Mist. ... which is just Shabon Spray again. Damn. The opening credits made me think she had a real attack, like in Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. But no, we're stuck with mist.

At least the mist seems to actually work in this version (ie, the Senshi can see perfectly, but the enemies are blinded). That's... something. **sigh**

Once Sailor Moon kills the Youma, we get a cute moment between Ami and Usagi where Ami insists on a meeting so she can get filled in on all the details. Which is nice - no one ever asked for one of those in the original anime.

Also, we get a teaser clip of Rei meditating in her temple.

And roll end credits.

Final Thoughts: Yup, this is following the manga much more closely. All the filler episodes just got tossed out a window. That means that, next episode, we not only meet Rei but we should have our first battle with one of the Dark Kingdom Generals.

Overall? I like it. I like it a lot. As much as I like the original Sailor Moon, one criticism of it that I have is that it rarely took the time for slow moments or character development. In just the first two episodes, the new series has done just that, cutting down battles and comedy in favor of character development.

I am fondly reminded of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (the live-action remake of season 1 which, while it had its flaws, was far more character driven than any other version of Sailor Moon I've seen). If Sailor Moon Crystal can take the lessons of Pretty Guardian and the awesomeness of the original series and give the whole thing a graphical upgrade... then hell yeah, sign me up for that.

I only have two overall criticisms:

1) The slight uncanny valley issue with the CG aided animation (mostly during Sailor Moon's transformation).

2) WHY IS MAMORU WEARING A TUXEDO EVERYWHERE?!

I've heard people don't like the new opening credits. I'm not sure why - it seemed fine to me. It isn't Moonlight Densetsu, but then nothing ever was. Sailor Moon had other songs, and none of them were all that good (and several were physically painful). There were people who didn't like the theme for Sailor Stars, but I always liked it better than Moonlight Densetsu. I wouldn't say the new one is better, but is isn't bad - it is unoffensive, which is more than some of the ending credits could muster.

Recommendation: If you like Sailor Moon - any version of Sailor Moon - then yo should watch Sailor Moon Crystal.

If you aren't familiar with Sailor Moon, but are curious, then this version may be the best place to start. It jumps right in to the best stuff without wasting time on filler.

For comparison, it takes about 8 episodes of the original to cover the plot presented in the first two of Crystal.

Edit2: Oh, screw it.

Act 3: Rei - Sailor Mars

You know, I was expecting there to be less implied yuri in this version with the lack of Ikuhara. I was wrong.

If anything, Usagi comes off as fully bi. She follows Rei off a bus with hearts in her eyes because Rei is beautiful. That is her exact stated reason. She also refers to Rei as "beautiful girl" to her face at least once.

Rei is also a lot calmer. And sadder. Rather than being at one another's throats, Usagi and Rei seem to be forming a solid friendship based on the fact that Rei has been alienated from everyone for having mysterious powers, and she feels a kinship with Usagi because Usagi also has super powers. Nice. I always found their forced animosity in the original anime rather pointless.

Oh - and we get to see Mamoru out of a Tuxedo for the first time ever. He's rocking reading glasses. Also, he's wearing a suit instead.

Again, I'm impressed by the amount of time the show takes for quiet, introspective moments. It is a lot less hyperactive than the original anime.

We also get to meet Nephrite and Zoicite. And Beryl. The Generals behave in a much more practical fashion. Cool.

Jadeite's plan is to kidnap hostages until he draws the Senshi into a trap. Cool plan - particularly since it works.

Oh, nice! Jadeite recognizes Rei. Hey relevant foreshadowing! Rei also recognizes Usagi when she's in Sailor Moon form, apparently the only one who can see through her cunning disguise.

Jadeite is an ice user this time, not a fire user. Interesting.

Rei's transformation sequence is very good. A little different from the original, but without any weird uncanny valley. I'm ready to call it the best transformation so far. Oh, and the fire bird appears during the transformation - awesome.

And, as in the manga, Rei is the one to defeat Jadeite. I don't... think he's dead. In the manga, Rei killed him here, but it looks like he escaped in this version. So we're splitting the difference then?

The episode ends on a clip of the fake-out gem (ie the Princess Diamond episode). The preview confirms it. Okay, so we have our first filler episode coming up. Lovely.

NOTE: If you want me to keep doing these reviews, please POST something in this thread as a reply to one of these messages. If I don't see someone post before episode 4, I won't bother writing up a review.

I register myself in this forum so you won't stop reviewing. I like your no nonsense style, it is hilarious. You said something about a fire bird on Rei's transformation. I rewatched it and there's nothing resembling a bird. Help?

The seemingly survived Jadeite is certainly causing some stir among the Moonies. Some even think it was a bad censored death. For me he was obviously escaping (with that swooshing sound and AN OBVIOUSLY WOOSHING EFFECT TO THE UPPER LEFT OF THE SCREEN). If he's still survived, it would be interesting to see how the show treat him after all this because they already introduced Nefrite and Kunzite, just like in the manga.

The author said that she wishes to pair the 4 Senshis with the 4 Shittenou, but never got the chance to do that in the manga. Maybe now we can see that unfolding. This created new mystery for those who are familiar with the series, which is a nice touch.

I personally liked the original series, but i can't get myself to like the new artstyle of this one. The low budget and and some times horrible art quality doesn't help either.

It's a shame how little effort Toei wants to put into such a popular series

Aww! Thank you!

Okay then, Episode 4 will be written up tomorrow.

BTW - unless people want me to make new threads, I think I might as well just continue posting in this one. Maybe I'll post links in the OP to the later posts or something.

Act 4: Masquerade

Since I'm getting serious about this now (I have fans - yay!), I decided to pull out the manga to compare. I'd forgotten that this storyline was also in the manga. Neat! It even has the same title

This makes me wonder something - so far, each chapter in the manga exactly lines up with a single episode in the new series. If this keeps going like that, this will only be a 13 episode season (assuming they end season 1 with the end of arc 1). I'm interested to see how this pans out.

Anyway...

We begin with Usagi waking up late. While this is very common for her, a manga is shown open in bed with her - the style looks fairly similar to Naoko's, so I'm wondering if it is a specific sight gag.

On the way to school, Usagi wants to abuse the transformation pen. Nice touch on characterization without actually having her go through with it.

We get a recap on who Ami and Rei are. I gotta say, Rei is so much more laid back in this version. I like her better this way - the forced conflict in the original anime got tired really, really fast.

Luna does the "you must protect the Princess" bit - slightly thrown off by the phrase "these Evil" and later "I think Evil are looking for..." Evil is not a noun, it's an adjective! I realize the subbers are trying to be literal, but can we please just call the youma "Youma"? While youma means "evil spirit," it does refer to a specific type of evil spirit. Like how calling Oni "Ogre" doesn't really work since western Ogres are giants whereas Oni are evil spirit creatures and thus not ogre-like at all. Also, "if enemies get it" when she means "if our enemies get it". Come on subbers - at least put it in proper English grammar!

But I digress. And I will again. I am really taken with the backgrounds in the new series. The arcade looks great, particularly the Sailor V logo that is running through its idle animation on the Sailor V video game. Nice touch!

ANYWAY....

Luna comments that Usagi is the leader because she was the first one to become a Sailor Guardian. What a weird logic that is. Does that mean that if Luna had stumbled across Ami first, that Ami would be the leader?

Of course, upon checking the manga, Luna says exactly the same thing there. This series really IS sticking closer to the manga. Even stuff I forgot was in there. And speaking of the manga, the one difference in the dialogue is that the manga USES PROPER GRAMMAR. Ahem.

AND Jadeite is alive. But his arm is hurt. Nifty.

OH. That would be one way to go. The live action "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon" follows the manga somewhat closer than the original series, but it let the Generals live so they could continue to back-stab one another and fight with the senshi in groups. Perhaps Crystal intends to follow Pretty Guardian's lead? Also, if they need some padding later, there are some really REALLY good story arcs in Pretty Guardian that weren't in either the manga or the original anime.

Nothing new with the generals (other than all four are present for a reminder about their mission from Beryl) so on to Usagi seeing her dad in a Tux. ... wow! Usagi's dad looks much, MUCH more attractive in this version than he did in the original. Damn.

And, of course, the pen temptation earlier was foreshadowing! Well done - what a subtle way to remind the audience that she can do that (apart from the fact that she did it in both previous episodes). I should have realized at the time (except that I forgot that this wasn't a sanctioned mission considering that Luna is looking for a silver crystal).

OH! And Crystal actually addresses Usagi getting Rei and Ami in (in the manga, it just sort of happens, and in the original anime, Luna gets them in somehow because Usagi forgot about them). Hilariously, they have to check Luna at the door.

Let's see... spilled wine and being seen (and not identified) by her dad - so far so standard.

Rei and Ami actually get to do stuff (they just sort of get left behind in the manga, and I don't recall them doing much other than Rei making fun of Usagi in the original anime). They stalk "Princess D" and see her head into a room with a suspicious (to Rei's sixth senses) woman.

We cut back to Usagi, and have another one of those quiet moments that I'm really liking where Usagi has a moment of introspection and thinks of Tuxedo Mask. And then, just like that, he shows up and asks to dance. Once again, his "mask" covers less of his face than his glasses, and he wears the Tuxedo as Mamoru, so... not sure why she can't tell it's him.

I will say one thing about Tuxedo Mask - Bow Ties are Cool. ^^

In a particularly weird moment, Luna shows up, mutters something to herself, and... Mamoru hears her and runs off? I checked the manga and it happens there too, and it's just as strange. Is Mamoru afraid of cats? Or does he remember who Luna is somehow? I'm not really sure how to take that.

Anyway, we cut to "Princess D" about to get possessed - and Nephrite out of freaking nowhere! Not his spirit, just him. This is after Ami and Rei burst into the room to witness it (which didn't happen in the manga, but .. might have happened in the anime).

Transformations (for Rei and Ami). I just noticed - Ami looks like she's ice skating during her transformation. Cute.

Yori Papilaya said:
You still haven't told me about the fire bird.
I was waiting for the right moment. Which is now.

I'm watching this on Hulu, so the timer might not line up for other services. However, when Rei transforms (at 15:15) right after her nails turn red, fire bursts out of her pen in the shape of a flaming bird.

It's at a 14 seconds on this video:

However, the youtube video quality is less than I get on Hulu.

Anyway, the fire starts out shaped like her fire bird attack from Sailor Moon R, but then turns into generic flames after a second or two before becoming rings that surround her.

Anyway....

So, "Princess D" shows up in the main ballroom and is possessed by Nephrite. Again, I can take these beats directly out of the manga. Hanging off the balcony, yada yada. Rei and Ami confront D/Nephrite - and get more than a half-shot of their hair like in the manga. Usagi and Tux fall - and parasol (which might be new for anyone only familiar with the dub, where they cut the fall out and simply reversed the video).

And, like the manga, Usagi gets a new tiara since her old one was destroyed in the battle with Jadeite (which is odd since Jadeite survived, but whatevs).

Usagi learns Moon Twilight Flash - which doesn't get a name, which is probably good since she hardly ever uses it (in the manga).

And then KUNZITE OUT OF FUCKING NOWHERE!!! And the other generals. What? I like Kunzite.

Oh, but Kunzite, your translation wounds me. "a servant who serves our great ruler." Really translators? Not a warrior, or a knight, or... oh never mind.

They all introduce themselves and pretty much establish that the whole thing where the generals get killed like regular youma is NOT happening in Crystal, and the thing where the generals stick around to be constant thorns in the senshi's sides like Pretty Guardian IS happening. FUCK YEAH!!! **does a happy dance**

And then, even thought the Generals outnumber the Senshi 4 to 3, Kunzite simply talks big and then leaves. On the plus side, he does drop some helpful info about the bad guys (like their names, as previously noted, and their goal of getting the silver crystal and making the world bow to their dark ruler).

This is actually really helpful. In both the manga and the original anime, Luna seem to make a lot of random assumptions about their enemy that pan out to be correct. Here, at least, they get confirmation of the evil plans that are afoot rather than just guessing.

Oh! And for once, Usagi isn't a lush!

Okay, explanation. In both the manga and the original (uncut) anime, there is a running gag that A) Usagi often mistakes wine for juice, even though they taste nothing alike and B) Usagi is a lightweight who gets drunk very easily. So on several occasions, Usagi picks up random wine, drinks it, and either acts like an idiot, passes out, or both.

This time, she's just tired and falls asleep on a bench outside (while still in costume as Sailor Moon, which is odd since both Rei and Ami have changed back into their fancy dresses).

Mamoru, however, does NOT miss his chance to be a total creeper by kissing the unconscious 14 year old girl.

And yes, the scene is lifted directly from the manga (where it's even creeper since Usagi is falling down drunk rather than simply tired).

Oh Naoko Takeuchi... you have some very odd ideas about romance, don't you?

....

Speaking of which, if this anime really does stick with the manga's acts and finish arc 1 in 13 episodes, then by episode 30 or so things should be getting pretty weird on that front. I look forward to finding out.

ANYWAY....

Luna yells at Tux for being a creeper, then ask why he's stalking them. He says he's looking for the silver crystal as well, and that he might well be their enemy. I could track the lines directly from my manga (except that my manga has a better translation).

And then Makoto is walking in the rain. Cool. (and exactly how the chapter ends in the manga)

And Preview: Makoto obviously.

Okay, so apparently (aside from the thing with the Generals) Crystal is sticking WAY closer to the manga than I'd realized. Like, I could use my manga as subtitles and get a better experience than the terrible translation I'm seeing on Hulu. Yikes. Are these really the official subs? If so, I'll be giving the new dub some serious consideration once I have this show on BluRay.

Overall, I gotta say, I'm really liking Crystal. It is basically the manga plus some extra stuff, and I like all of the extra stuff. My main criticism of the manga is that it could get a little thin at times and was often very VERY Usagi centric. Crystal is telling the same story, but takes time to breathe and giving people other than Usagi some screen time.

I'm too lazy to quote. Is there any quick way to do it? But ok.

About the firebird, maybe it was too fast, but I do get a strong impression of flapping movement of the fire from her pen (plus the sound effect is emphasizing it). About Mercury, yes she does look like she's skating. A very very nice touch. This reminds me, Naoko did a series about ice skating. It was called Cherry, if my memory serves me right.

One thing that bothers me is why Luna suspicious to Mamoru instead of Tuxedo Mask (in the opening scene). For all she knows until this point, they're different people, and Mamoru isn't that significant to her cause since he's just a person who seemed to know that Luna is a talking cat - a fact that anybody can make, since Luna and Usagi often converse everywhere. The one she should be suspicious about is Tuxedo Mask, since his actions seemed intertwined with hers (and the Senshis). The scene made it like Luna already knew who Mamoru is. Which is odd.

Yeah. Mamoru suddenly running away after hearing Luna is very weird. I never thought he could listen to Luna. There was music, and Luna was muttering to herself. She wasn't even in her conversation voice. Maybe he realized that something was off about the Princess D, but the scenes didn't communicate that. Or maybe he was so desperately need to go to the bathroom. Lol

Sailor Moon falls asleep is better than she's drunk. Her waking up late in the beginning, in my opinion, is foreshadowing. It emphasizing that Usagi's unable to actually stay up late. That's very subtle.

Oh why don't you try Niconico? Their subs is better.

Chins randomly changing shape and other animation mistakes

Your images are unviewable (I only get a no hotlinking message from the website).

That said... chins? You think the computer-aided animation and 3D models (the transformations are clearly cell-shaded 3D like South Park and Family Guy) is cheaply animated because the chins seem to change shape?

I have made a few comments about how the CG animation occasionally hits the uncanny valley, but otherwise I think it looks fine. It isn't hand drawn, but then what is these days?

The "OMG Animation errors!" argument sounds like the crap people said about Frozen. It has even been pointed out that there is an animation error in the clip I used in my avatar.

My response? Let's go back to the original Sailor Moon anime and count the animation errors. There are a lot of them. And so what? If the story and characters are good, who cares if there are a couple animation goofs?

As I noted in my review, the backgrounds in Crystal are absolutely amazing! They kept much of the painted pastel style from the original (something you don't see much anymore) but also did amazing jobs on interior backgrounds that the original lacked entirely. I watch Crystal and see lots and lots of attention to detail and beautiful work done. Are there mistakes - sure - but there's also a lot more there to make mistakes in.

Since I couldn't see your images, I took a trip to tumblr and searched for Sailor Moon Crystal animation errors. I was greeted with quite a few images... and in most (not all) of them, I couldn't even see the error, or (in the case of the side-by-side corrected versions) I thought the "error" looked better than the "correction." Sorry, but I just don't see what people are bitching about.

I took the images from here. Pay attention to Rei's chin, which changes shape from a more rounded shape to almost a triangle. I personally expect more from a reboot of a show as popular as this. It might not bother you as much as me though.

Click quote, then edit the original post as you like, copy-pasting the original quote line and typing in the end quote line as needed.

Well, there is the fact that Mamoru walks around town in a Tuxedo quite often. It's really quite odd that they think they are DIFFERENT people at this point. I forgot to check the manga to see what he's wearing as street clothing during their first meeting - hm.

Lol
It honestly didn't make much sense in the manga, either, but then the manga often tends to be rushed and often not so clear on exactly what is happening. Naoko tended to favor style over substance in her artwork, and had issues with blocking (which is why we get a scene that just shows the backs of Ami and Rei's heads at one point) which Crystal seems to be avoiding even while following her manga very closely.

Which is actually one reason why I'm not sure where this "animation error" business is coming from. Naoko's manga style is practically unreadable. She was terrible at sequential artwork telling a story (which is why the manga relies heavily on the characters explaining what they're doing, since the drawings often fail to convey it). Don't get me wrong, the manga is beautiful - but beautiful because of its errors and anatomical issues. And that very beauty is part of what prevents it from effectively telling a story some of the time.

Sailor Moon falls asleep is better than she's drunk. Her waking up late in the beginning, in my opinion, is foreshadowing. It emphasizing that Usagi's unable to actually stay up late. That's very subtle.
Indeed! The writing for the parts they added in is excellent! I am very impressed.

Oh why don't you try Niconico? Their subs is better.
I have a Hulu Plus subscription, so I watch Sailor Moon Crystal (and everything else) on my big screen HD TV. I'd have to watch Niconico on my laptop, which is where I'm writing these reviews, so I couldn't watch and write at the same time.

That's not an error - that's angles. The more in profile she is, the more rounded her chin gets. The more straight-on she is, the more pointy. The change is because she's facing the camera more often.

I am absolutely sure that all the characters in this are 3D modeled and cel-shaded (you can really tell during the transformations - it nearly looks like a video game) which means that she has a consistent 3D model and any changes you see are just anomalies of having a 3D model of a 2D character.

That isn't to say that those anomalies aren't jarring - I still find Sailor Moon's rubbery movements during her transformation to be off-putting. However, they aren't cheap or errors - they are simply a problem with the new style of animation, and something that artists will need to learn how to avoid as the style is more commonly used.

To put this into perspective, a few years back I saw an anime that was clearly animated in Flash. It looked beautiful - until anything moved, and then it was like watching an anime version of South Park where beautifully drawn characters moved around like paper cut-outs while the animators tried very hard to hide that fact (and failed).

The point is, Anime is going through a lot of technical changes right now. Different shows are trying different things. Some of them work, others fall on their faces. That's how innovation works - you try something new and do your best to fix the problems as they come up.

Does the animation in Sailor Moon Crystal have some problems? Hell yeah. But not because they're cheap or lazy - because they're trying new animation methods. It takes time to get used to new software (and each transformation looks less rubbery and more natural than the previous one, which shows signs of improvement right there). Plus, the backgrounds certainly aren't cheap or lazy.

I say, give them a season to work out the kinks. When Usagi gets her second transformation, we'll see if they've fixed all the problems.

In the manga, he wore the tux only on the first chapter. In the second chapter he wore a suit with a bow tie(unlike in the episode 2 where he wore the tux still). I don't know, I just felt it needed an extra small scene where Luna wondering if Mamoru and Tuxedo is the same person. Maybe somewhere when Tuxedo made appearance or something.

I agree with this. The manga is quite allover the place and not well structured, but beautiful nevertheless. This is why Crystal animators are having a great deal of trouble, since I don't think Naoko's style can translate well into animation. Animation always need a sense of space and time, cause and effect, where one thing begins and ends. I'm starting to think that despite the animation 'errors', the animators are having a really difficult job in keeping Naoko's style but still make sense.

I'm an illustrator myself and I agree that only the first episode which was flawless. But I don't think it's cheap. Sailor Moon has this particular design which cannot be copied easily (and furthermore, animated) by even the most experienced animator. If they're not familiar with drawing Sailor Moon before, even though they have a great skill in drawing people, I don't think the job will be easy. So, while I was sometimes disappointed, I can see their struggle.

The old anime is worse in term of consistency of the quality. Didn't stop us to enjoy it.

Sorry if this sounds a bit harsh but I feel I should put in my two cents here. This is what I said on Crunchyroll after episode 2 came out and it really hasn't really change my opinion since the last two episodes.

*************

Let me start off with as a guy by saying that I've been a Sailor Moon fan since I first saw it in 1995 when my older brother showed it to me. It was the very first anime I ever saw and it's been my all-time favorite since then. After I got into Junior High I pretty much forgot about it and moved on to other things. I didn't return to the series until my Junior year in High School and that's when I started noting its problems and all the other stuff which lead to my fanfic that is my own version of the story.

When I heard about this reboot I was just as happy as everyone else was but I was rather disappointed that it was just retelling of the original story that was much closer to the manga rather than doing a new version of it. But even then I really wasn't expecting much from this reboot and as it turned out my expectations weren't far off at all.

After two episodes it pretty much boils down to this: Sailor Moon Crystal is nothing more than Toei Animation making a cash grab with a popular product of theirs because they know fans will buy it regardless. Does that make it a bad series so far though? Hell no, I've actually enjoyed every minute of so far minus the opening song which I absolutely hate. But I have to be completely honest with my feelings about this series even if the majority of fans disagree with me.

This new version of Sailor Moon still suffers from the exact same problems the original version had: No history or common sense whatsoever. We still know nothing about the origins of the Sailor Scouts or the Moon Kingdom. What exactly was the Silver Millennium? Was it an age rather a kingdom? I would certainly like to think so. What happen to all the other people who died on the Moon Kingdom when Queen Beryl destroyed it? How is that no one recognizes the characters in their uniforms when they look no different than their civilian forms? Hell, in this version a five year-old could figure out who Tuxedo Mask is simply because his civilian form is just Tuxedo Mask without his hat, mask, or cape. At least in the original anime the animators were smart enough by having Darien wearing casual clothes instead of a tuxedo all the time.

Crystal offers nothing new to Sailor Moon other than what? A new style of animation that more closely resembles Naoko Takeuchi's original artwork and CGI transformations? "But it based more closely to the manga!" Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, the live-action version of Sailor Moon, pretty much did the same thing more or less. Yes, I know it deviated from the original plot by the time Jupiter came in but that isn't the point. Why do we need an animated version of PGSM? From the looks of it that's the kind of direction Crystal is going.

There's nothing innovative or refreshing here whatsoever. It's just the same thing being told once again. Now seeing that it's still early there is the possibility that they might try to add more to the story, but seeing that it's only going to be 26 episodes I highly doubt they'll bother to do so simply because this is based more on the manga and they wouldn't have the time. Say what you want about the original anime but I think it was a smart decision to split the entire story into five separate seasons rather than cramming it all into one, even if half the episodes were filler.

Look, I can go on about the problems with this new anime, and Sailor Moon in general, but I think I've made my point clear. Sailor Moon Crystal is done for the fans and little else. Whether this was Toei's idea or Naoko's I don't know. I still believe even today that Naoko Takeuchi never intended Sailor Moon to turn out the way it did in the original anime and I think she's just putting up with Toei simply because she doesn't want to tarnish her image in the manga/anime community and to keep the fans happy without alienating herself from them.

To me, Sailor Moon could have developed into something much greater back then had it not been for the direction it was taken and its controversial issues that I believe ultimately lead to its downfall. It deserves better than what it has even now. Under the right director and writers, it could have developed into something that could have rivaled that of Star Wars, Final Fantasy, and even Dungeons & Dragons. I know that's a very big claim but I really do believe that, and I've based my fanfic on that belief. Yeah, I've Americanized the story to the core but so what? No one really wants to read the same story again and again and I'm unleashing my imagination which is what fanfics are suppose to be.

Overall, Sailor Moon Crystal as of now is satisfying but offers nothing new to the franchise. The concept is there but has yet to be taken into full flight. I always felt that Sailor Moon deserved a second chance but this new version doesn't do it for me. We'll see as it goes on.

Why do we need an animated version of PGSM?
Because Pretty Guardian was the BEST version of the show that ever existed, but it was too short, never introduced the Outer Senshi or Starlights (being too short) and was severely limited by budget? And because hardly anyone has seen it outside of extremely dedicated Sailor Moon fans (like us), so this gives others a chance to see the series at its best? And there is no official, legal release of PGSM in the US forcing me to buy crappy Chinese DVDs with terrible subtitles whereas Crystal will be released on BluRay with proper subs and a cast of modern professional dubbers (rather than the awful DiC dub).

So yeah, there's half a dozen reasons why, if Crystal ends up being an animated version of PGSM, it will be the best thing to happen to Sailor Moon... since PGSM.

Now, I don't think Crystal is an animated version of PGSM (yet) but I certainly hope it becomes that good!

Edit: Oh, and the next episode will go up as soon as I have a chance to write it up properly.
