Okay, I'm a playstation head and have always liked RPG's but never really had the chance to get into them. I played Final Fantasy X a LOT and at the moment i'm well into The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
I know some of you guys have gotta be well clued up, so i'm wondering what advice you could give someone like me as to what games i should look at. I'm pretty much just looking for a game with a good story line, good character building and fun i guess :] oh, and they have to be PS2 or PS3. sorry.

hm. Digital Devil Saga is pretty good. Dark Cloud 2 was loads of fun. i can look through my library of ps2/3 games for recommendations. also, what about turn based RPGs? if so i might have a couple more recommendations.

Fallout 3 might be a good idea.

Also, I know you said PS2/PS3, but do you have a decent PC? If so, the KotOR games/Baldur's Gate games/Neverwinter Nights are pretty good.

Yeah, I'm into Bioware.

Yeah, I'm into Bioware.
I would've said the same thing.
Also, if your PC can handle it and you liked KotOR, Mass Effect is worth a try.

I would have mentioned that, but my logic was that if he didn't mention the PC as a gaming platform, chances are the one he has can't handle ME.

I endorse Mass Effect as well, but if you can't afford to run that, I would heartily recommend Jade Empire.

Jak and Daxter, not an RPG but still a hell of a game

If not that, get some of the Bioware games listed

Kingdom Heart 1 and 2,
I agree. I don't care if there were Disney characters in the game, the combat was fun, the bosses were fun, and I never stopped having fun, ever.

This is my recommendation as well. Also, look into Steambot Chronicles on the PS2. I picked it up used at a game shop, and it is a very nice RPG. Loads of content. Google it.

Not being an RPG fan, I would suggest the KOTOR series, you already have oblivion, MAYBE Mass Effect.

Kotor I and II are fun especially if you like Star Wars. I enjoyed the arena matches and Captain Picard in Oblivion. Mass Effect is fun, but real dialouge and story heavy, so if thats what your looking for. All three of these games did keep me interested to play til the end.

I do hate Fable series, Fallout 3, and Morrowind. I also have a bias against JRPGS.

Kingdom Hearts, has excellent gameplay. BUT ITS FUCKING DISNEY!

Shadow Hearts 3: From The New World. I can't recommend 1 or 2, I've never found them, and thus never played them.
Shadow Hearts is a strange and wonderful game. You end up with a strange set of party members, it has a neat battle system, and quite a good storyline. I think it has what you need.

You have a PS2, which prolly has some of the best rpgs released (including the PS1 library). The Tales of series, Final Fantasies (ALL of them: Tactics, FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, FFX, FFX-2, FFXII and the made-for-PS1 compilations of older games if you're feeling SNES-y), Dark Cloud 2, Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, Persona 2, 3 and 4, Disgaea 1 and 2 with Makai Kingdom, la Pucelle Tactics and Phantom Brave (if you don't mind strategy JRPGs; Nippon Ichi=win) are the ones that come to my mind. There are a LOT more tho. I'll post some more when I can check my collection :p
EDIT: the poster above is right. Shadow Hearts 1 might feel a bit dated, but Shadow Hearts 2 and 3 will probably quench your thirst for RPGs.
EDIT 2: also note that most of the games I mentioned might be pretty hard to find, and if you do find them, they might be a little expensive. I'm not sure I can reccomend any PS3 RPG since I haven't played any except for Disgaea 3(I'd save up for FFXIII tho!).

I would not recomend ANY JRPG's I personally love RPG's but my experience with JRPG's has alwyas been bad. Fallout 3 is nice until you get to the ending. Oblivion is also a good one; but you know that. I dont recommend Overlord not very deep character. Baldur's Gate. Alone in the Dark isn't terrible.

I'd personally add a little addendum to the KotOR recommendation. First one was a great RPG, I thouroughly enjoyed pretty much every aspect, but I genuinely wish I could go back in time and unplay the second one. The ending of number 2 was just a great big slap in the face to anyone who played either game, and the game itself wasn't great. So get 1, but steer clear of 2.
