RPG Maker XP or VX?

I had used RPG Maker XP a few years back and I found it fairly easy to use, and could make beautiful environments with it. Scripting was fairly quick once you got the hang of it, which I did even with no coding background prior to that. Importing custom tilesets, characters and backgrounds seemed easy, although a bit time consuming to do properly.
Now I just found out that they released a new version, VX, and I was wondering if anyone here had any experiences with both and could give me a decent comparison. I want to make a 16 bit RPG, SNES FF2 style, based on an old D&D game that we played; so I'm looking for the version which is best to make varied environments, easily import enemies, and with a simple to modify battle system. I would like to buy the program if it's worth it and adequately suits my needs.
Also, if anyone knows of a decent community resource to use to swap custom resources and scripts for the program that would be awesome.

Use XP because it's... well... quoting Tina Turner. ITS SIMPLY THE BEST! BETTER THAN ALL THE REST. And also if you've used it before then it'll be easier than trying to learn the new system. I still use XP anyway...

For what you what, go with XP. VX suffers from very limited custom map tileset space and the character spites like fat chibi things. Just something that bugs me about VX.

Here's a place I go for resources.

I never got a chance to try XP, but VX is essentially a shinier version of 2000 from what I've messed with thus far.

A problem I've had with both iterations is that I can never figure out a way to do precisely what I want to do, or get things to look right. As a perfectionist it drives me batshit, because while my dialouge is terrific, I can't manage to push myself to get anything else done BECAUSE IT DOESN'T LOOK RIGHT GAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

Also I suck at map design. And since 7/10 of RPGMaker is map design...

XP is probably better suited to your needs, the environments available from the get go are much more varied, and quite a bit easier to customize.

I use this [http://www.rpgmakervx.net/] site for resources and scripts.

if this helps vx is the windows vista of the rpg makers whereas xp is the, well windows xp.

only bonus i found in vx is the fact you dont need to set layers, {but then i'm lazy}
