...on PS2. Something with a lot of side quests and some at least semi-open-world gameplay. I'm looking for something that won't just keep me playing after I've beaten the main story, but will encourage me to start a whole new game (Like something where you get to customize your character to your own style). Also something that's fairly immersive.

Thanks in advance.

May I suggest you include 'on PS2' in the title? It would save people coming in here thinking they can help when they can't. Myself included.

Damn, my first thought was 'OBLIVION!' but then I read the PS2 bit. Hmm... try some of the Tony Hawks games, I've always regarded them as being kinda RPGish.

Persona 3 FES has an entire extra chapter added onto it. And that's a long game to begin with. That's probably the only one I can think of.
No cosmetic character customization, though.

I could name a number of RPGs on the PS2, some good and some crap, but most don't have New Game+. Closest, i suppose, would be Radiata Stories, which is somewhat open, in the sense that you can get into some areas before you're supposed to go there, has a very limited carry-over new-game scenerio, and that there's a single major story split which encourages, if nothing else, a second playthrough.

There's also Breath of Fire 5: Dragon Quarter, but i refuse to suggest that on the grounds that i hate it and i hope it dies forever.

You could, if it can play it, import Tales of Symphonia. You'll have no idea where to go or what they are talking about lenghening an already long game with insane replay value.

What he said. I had a few in mind, but then I read the "on the PS2" part and was like 'oh, nevermind'.
I did enjoy "Star Ocean: 'Till the End of Time". It has multiple endings and several optional after-story challenges to try.

You could try Dark Cloud 2, it is a dungeon crawler RPG that has two playable and customizable characters, has a fun town creation mode and has tuns of side quests like fishing, spheda (which is like a spin on golf) and character recruitment. It even has an extra chapter after you beat the main story which has extra tough dungeon. Although it is a little bit difficult to find in stores so I would look for it online if you can or you could just get the original which isn't bad either and is easier to find.

If you didn't say that it you only wanted to get an RPG for the PS2 then I would also recommend Chrono Trigger just because it is such an awesome game and it was even ported to the DS.

Star Ocean: Till the end of time.

Alternatively, you could sell your PS2, pick up a PS1 and play Star Ocean: The Second Story and get a far better experience.

I'd recommned giving Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King a shot, if you haven't already, since it fits those criteria, although maybe not with the customizable characters. You can pick the fighting styles of the characters, but they aren't fully customizable.

Still, I'd recommend that.

How about FF12? It has the customization part. That is all I can come up with.

Dark Cloud 2!!!! An AMAZING game that has alot of things to do that will keep you busy for a long time. And it does nudge you to play it again after you beat it. I would love a Dark Cloud 3...but it probably would only be a PS3 game..

This. As much as I love Shin Megami Tensei. In fact as much as I obsess with it, Dark Cloud 2 is a game I will also go back to frequently to enjoy old times. The weapon customization alone is enough to fill up a game, but as mentioned by Polarix, the fishing, golf, and town building all add up. Plus there is also the monster transformations and robot customization, along with a gigantic invention system. Alot to do, and there are minor new game+ features as well.

I know, it is a very good game. The gameplay is fantastic and another thing that I liked about the game is the music, I could listen to the Intro theme 10 times in a row and not get tired of it. Too bad it is so hard to find in stores because I rented it when I was younger and now I can't find it anywhere, I'll probably have to buy it online to be able to get a copy of it.
