Okay, I know it's probably been done to death, but so what.
RUGBY VS AMERICAN FOOTBALL. As far as the rugby side goes, just to keep things simple lets try avoiding any union vs league debates.

Let us know which you prefer and why.
as for me, I prefer rugby. I've given both a go and can safely say that I'm more of a rugby fan.

How about the rest of you?

Actually most of the time is "football vs handegg" threads that are filled with condescension on both sides of the line. Really the thread just ends up being a bunch of Europeans telling us how stupid we are. (actually most threads where someone wants to compare something from the US to something in Europe or the rest of the world devolves into non-US posters saying how stupid and rude we are....which kinda doesn't make sense since they're the ones tossing insults)

But I digress. I had the opportunity to watch a Rugby match when I was in the UK last summer and I gotta say; I think Rugby would make some of our NFL players run home to their mommies.

I prefer Rugby.
Stuff happens in Rugby games that is more than two riots slamming into each other. Also it is a lot more flowing. Infinitely more enjoyable to watch.

Rugby League is better again.

I prefer Rugby, I'm English, so it's not like I have a choice :p

I dont like American Football 'cos it stops and starts all the damn time. Although Rugby stops for scrums, line-outs and the like, the game feels smoother and they are actually a part of the game.

I guess some of the tackles in American Football are more spectacular, but Rugby certainly isnt short of them, and the players dont have protection.

"Football" (and I use inverted commas only because as you know, in the UK, Soccer = football) is a bit stop-starty with all the plays. Gotta say that the "football" fans are cooler though.
In the rest of the world Soccer = Football. Everyone else calls it football, just in their own language as far as I'm aware :p

US. football because I can watch it. But I like rugby too. Aussie Football smokes them both though, watch it sometime if you can. It's kinda like US football but with less breaks in the game.

Check it out.

The only time I ever saw rugby once and it was on tv. I got there half way in, had no idea what was going on, but recognized the guy that was I guess you could say quarterbacking the play was someone who wasnt picked up in an NFL draft.

So thats about all I can say on rugby just based on my personal experience. Its where the NFL draft rejectees go to play (besides of course the Canadian Football League, but I guess they like to keep their opportunities open for our NFL criminals).

As to which I prefer, well, both pale in comparison to Hockey and Lacrosse, but I'll saw NFL cause I have more expreience there and it gives me a valid enough excuse to naturally hate anyone from Baltimore or Cleveland. Just like Hockey gives me a reason to naturally hate anyone from Philadelphia or Washington D.C. and its close surrounding areas. Plus I know more about the NFL, and I just dont care to learn anyhting about a new sport that looks so closely similar.

Both have their pros and cons. Rugby edges it because of the mental sharpness required to spot a gap in a defensive line mid-play. That and I don't need to where my weight in padding to play.

Football

I get bored watching sports were the ball/puck/etc. is constantly moving because then everything starts blending together for me. I prefer the "explosive"nature of Merican football.

I'm going with football because I'm an American.
-Bandit Keith

Well I'm going to have to agree with Bandit Keith on this one. Only problem is the only time I've actually watched Rugby was like 20 seconds ago on a youtube post so I guess I'm a little bias.

Rugby: A load of muscley men holding onto each other and throwing balls around.

American Football: A load of not-so-muscley men pretending to be muscley and throwing balls around.

Not really a lot to choose from is there?

I have never played Rugby, but to be honest, when you play backyard football without pads it is pretty damn close to be honest. You forgo a lot of the rules and it becomes very similar. So I have to say if I was given the choice I would probably take Rugby.

Oh, and to all the people that love to say football players are pansies for wearing pads, I have never seen two 300 pound people line up to hit each other after a good start in rugby not a frontal tackle at full speed, if you did that without pads you would have more injuries than you could count.

I'm From New Zealand.

So by default I have to chose rugby, we are hosting the world cup this year.

American football is fun to watch though, I have stayed up late a few times and gotten drunk with mates watching the Superbowl.

Though if you want to see a great game, England vs. Australia RWC finals 2003 was epicly epic.

Hopefully this year the final will have some tries scored. The '07 final was disappointing in that respect.

OT: I've played Union, League and American football and I far prefer Rugby Union.
