Rumor: Tom Cruise "in Talks" to Appear in Star Wars: Episode VII Update

Tom Cruise reportedly met with Star Wars: Episode VII director J.J. Abrams for a guest appearance in the movie.

Update: A representative for Tom Cruise denies the star will be in the Star Wars: Episode VII [http://www.gossipcop.com/tom-cruise-star-wars-cameo-role-not-true-jj-abrams/], but we'll see what actually happens when the upcoming Star Wars series is closer to release.

Original Story: Prepare your bunkers, as the Cruise Missile might be hitting the Star Wars movie franchise. A recent report claims superstar actor Tom Cruise (Edge of Tomorrow, Mission Impossible) is "in talks" with director J.J. Abrams for a possible appearance in Star Wars: Episode VII. The Sun reports that Cruise, who's in London, met in a hotel with Abrams to discuss the possibility of a cameo appearance in the sci-fi film's seventh entry, which is currently filming in Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire. While the source might be a bit suspect, it's worth noting that Cruise and Abrams are already working together on Mission: Impossible 5 for a 2015 release, and the rag has nailed down Paul Bettany's role as the "Vision" in The Avengers sequel [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132099-Paul-Bettany-To-Play-Vision-In-The-Avengers-Age-of-Ultron], Age of Ultron. Cruise's reps have not responded when asked to comment on the rumor's validity.

Star Wars: Episode VII has been quite active in the news recently, with a Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy mash-up video [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/135494-Report-Star-Wars-Episode-VII-Villains-to-be-Known-as-Jedi-Hunters] to see Luke, Darth Vader and the rest of the cast injected in a trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy.

Is Cruise appearing in Star Wars: Episode VII a rumor you want to come true? Are you even ready to see Maverick appear as a Jedi or would you rather he steers clear of the franchise altogether?

Can they just make a good film?

If all these rumors are true then episode 7 is going to end up as hated as episode 1. Stop putting in cameos and fancy stuff and make something than will advance the franchise (in a way that is actually fun)

To be fair, it would be somewhat fitting that Cruise be in a film series where its protagonists believe in weird space magic, though Scientology is more ridiculous. I'd sooner convert to believing in the Force than thetans.

In any case, I'm not going to jump to any conclusions until more concrete evidence surfaces.

Was sorely tempted to post this in the actual news piece, but thought it might be too much.

Why exactly?

I can't even think of any reason he'd make a cameo. 'Hey its Tom Cruise' would take people out of Star Wars even more than the 70 year old original cast will.

I would be ok with Cruise playing a small part as long as he is a villain and channels Vincent from Collateral:

Cameo....
I hope Cruise realises that's like being a bartender or a begger that quickly passes by with maybe a line no one listens to, NOT being the main protagonist :p
I don't mind, as long as it is a stupid little cameo that he wants so he can say he's been in a StarWars movie.

I don't have a problem with Cruise. I like sci-fi movies in general, and his appearances rarely disappoint (though I will grant you he's usually the same character in each). I can only see something like this played for a laugh though, much like Bruce Campbell cameos.
What I am starting to have a problem with is these newsposts though - why is it necessary to link every other Escapist article that might have some remote, tangential connection to the topic?
That SW/GotG trailer? NOTHING to do with this story.
Paul Bettany as Vision? LESS THAN NOTHING to do with this story. FFS, that's Avengers news.
If you have to pad out an article, at least do it in a way that makes sense.

what would a tom cruise cameo accomplish there is nothing to point to previous involvment in the series. there is no point everyone will go oh hey its tom cruise and be brought out of the movie.

It's not so much about Tom Cruise himself, but that they're resorting to celebrity cameos is why this is setting off the biggest alarm bells yet. Honestly, between this and Nathan Fillion reportedly showing up in GotG, I'm starting to think this is going to be a disturbing new trend and there really is no cheap trick Hollywood won't try to draw audiences.

This movie is so under-rated. And it's probably the best movie Cruise has ever been in. As for SWVII. No. Just, no. I'm already anticipating this to be a trainwreck. But seeing Action Man, the Actioniest Man that Ever Actioned, Man... pop up on screen will instantly rip me out of the movie and slam me face-first into the pavement of the real world I'm trying to watch some fun fantasy stuff to get away from for a bit.

The star-power thing works from stuff like Mission Impossible. But fantasy and sci-fi are a different kind of escapism and they work best with unknowns, lower profiles or actors that can disappear into their roles and the world of the story.

Ugh - I'm seriously considering skipping it all together.

You know something, you're absolutely right.

Hugely underrated performance in that cracking movie - I would love to see him play more villains like that.

That said, I really hope this is the rumour mill going nuts over anything semi Star Wars related.

I'm more bummed by Harrison Ford's broken leg!

I have never like Tom Curise, always though he was a bit actor with a huge ego. If he was on fire I would pour gasoline on him then dump salt on him to put out the flames.

However ...

How many actors and actress, under the age of sixty, who didn't dream of being in a Star Wars movie since they were kids themselves? Just like us, how many of them would love to just be there as the third stormtrooper on the left or 15th alien in the bar? So as long as it is a background character or a minor line like "incoming missiles"; let the guy be a kid again.

Anymore then that and I got the salt ready.

'The worst thing about being Tom Cruise is you can't be Tom Cruise crazy, you can just be Tom Cruise.' ~ What's-his-name

If it's done for a laugh like Mark Hammil's 'Cocknocker' in that Jay and Silent Bob movie I'll laugh, if he's a big character it'll probably jar me out of the movie.
