I guess the digital age begins for consoles too, if this is true.

Then I honestly don't see why people would get that over a PC?

First things first you can upgrade your PC if you want the quality of your games graphics/smoothness to keep increasing as the quality of those things in games increases over time, with the Xbox you'll be stuck to the release day hardware.

The one thing the Xbox had is that you could have as many games as you want on discs, with ease of access and no downloading, whereas most PC games you have to install/download and take up space on your hard drive/wait for games to download.

If this is true then it will be just a very limited PC imo, I'll stick with steam for all my gaming needs :)

If this is true then i give up on gaming . I dislike digital download ( although i very well understand why people love it). I just like having a physical copy of my games , once this is no longer possible i am throwing in the towel and buying old games to keep myself contente.

Yeah, I can't imagine this can be true, the internet in most places is too poor to download AAA games frequently.

I game on Steam and have a poor internet connection, and will always pay slightly more for the boxed version if its Steamworks, as it takes me a day or two to download a 10GB+ game.

I'm probably just going to hold out for this mythical SteamBox, and plugin the xbox controller to the computer. If the new Xbox comes out before then, I'll just build my own...because screw buying digital from Microsoft.

Ahh, rumours...
So frequent, so random, so pointless...
That being said, if this is true, I wouldn't be too happy, because like someone said above me, it's nice owning a physical copy of a game- a statement I definitely agree with.

I don't know why you didn't OP, but you should have linked to MCV, they're a reputable source.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/exclusive-no-disc-drive-for-next-xbox/092534

It's linked within OP's article.

This isn't the bleak Dig.Dist. only future some of you are imagining. The article makes it sound as if there'll be a resurgence of carts rather than discs. Which is fine.

A little bit earlier than expected if true, but it was going to happen anyway, sooner or later.

Maybe (hopefully) they'll be using flash drives. Although, that would give them an excuse to jack up the price a lot more.

You and me both brother. I strongly dislike paying for intangible things and once video games go all digital I'm done (with modern gaming). Thank the Gaming Gods for amazon, Ebay and, flea-markets though. There are hundreds of games I've missed out on from the past and the ones I have played, not all were beaten (like Earthworm Jim and, Chrono Trigger which were played but not beaten and, Dragon Quest 1 - 7 which I've never played).

Edit: Upon reflection, this rumor seems to be exclusive to the Xbox and Microsoft. We already know that the Wii-U will be using discs so for now all this rumor could do is give me another reason to side with Nintendo's latest console instead of the competition.

Problem with actual carts is that physical hardware is expensive compared to CD, DVD and Bluray format. Even DS and Vita game cards aren't true carts and function alot like a DS card.
Maybe the DS cards would be a good next step. The DS was basically a handheld SNES but seemed strong enough to play higher quality games years ago (like Super Mario 64). That was just on the DS too: the 3DS uses the same cards of the same size and Samurai Warriors looked like something that could have been on home consoles. There's no reason I can see to scale that technology up and implement it into a home console.

I don't think this will happen. Lots of people have very, very crappy internet. This would literally make it impossible for them to play anything because it would take them a year just to download a game.

Rumour: Next Xbox console won't include Dark Sakul as a owner.

Maybe they're going back to cartridges.

I'm totally on board with that idea.

Nope Just Chick Tesla

I hope that it isn't download only. The internet just isn't robust enough for this yet.

And if it uses something akin to flash carts then I'm guessing that's just their way of getting out of paying Sony licensing fees for using Blu-rays

I can't see this working, so I reckon this 'rumour' is exactly that. Not everyone has broadband, meaning this move would immediately alienate a chunk of Microsoft's potential customers. No disc drive would mean no backwards compatibility with current customers' game libraries - unless they plan on releasing a USB external disc drive peripheral as well, and that'd just be dumb as hell.

Weren't games in cartridge days were like 90$ each?
Fuck, considering the state of the industry 120$ would become the new standard.
