So my work has tasked me to run my team's Mario Kart tournament, which is great, but I've never done it before. It's 16 people, which makes it REAL simple (16 becomes 8, becomes 4, becomes 2, becomes winnar) - where could I go wrong? The question's two-fold:

Part a)
One of our colleagues is injured, and may not be around for a few weeks. The other is a soulless douche that hates everything, and will likely refuse to play. If both are gone, I'll have 14 players.

- How do you do a standard ladder system when 14 becomes 7?

- If only ONE is unavailable/an asshole, how do you do it with 15 people?

Part b)
Alternatively, if we have 16 but the ass decides to be a dick and not play, I could make it simple and just say he plays, but forfeits.

- How can I make it fair between the players that automatically win and those that have to actually race?

Thanks for your time, you classy guys, you.

Make it simple, everyones name is randomly drawn from...something, probably a hat. each lots of 2 go into their bracket to face off. If one refuses to play or isn't their, they forfeit and that winner simply gets seeded up to the next fight.

Easy solution.

If dealing with an odd number, just have one person sit out a round. I would also look into different tournament structures if I were you. Some of them are really fun and can make the early losers feel less left out.

Edit: The type I'm thinking of is a Swiss tournament, but I don't know if that'd work with only a small number of people.

mmm I love playing mario kart in bed with my socks on.... wait what? oh Tournament... hmm

You could try and set up a time trail sort of thing using the ghost mode time attack: Best player(s) gets to go straight to round 2
