When Snake kills The Boss.
When Big Boss dies.
When Elisa/Ursula is killed by Gene.
I've had Metal Gear on my mind for the past week.

Dark Tower 7 -
When Oy is killed by Mordred.

Seriously, the other scenes we can handle but this one was...ugh.

Final Fantasy Tactics -
The death of Teta. Also the ending when Delita lays on the ground after murdering his wife.

American History X -
Edward Furlong...

*SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!*

Definitely when Dumbledore dies, because they had to write the entire series to get to that result and that was a tragedy in itself.
XD
Quote me or most of the people in this thread if you want to know who to put a spoiler box.

Oh god yes, it's like she ran out of ways to shock us so she started killing people off.

I've got three -

When Durzo dies. And he had a letter written for Kylar and it was soaked in blood. I was just like...FFFFFFFUUUUU- Because Kylar is constantly ruining things for himself and everyone else.
Dumbledore. I chucked the book across the room and cried for half an hour, then when I went to retrieve it there was a dent in my wall. Sirius' death in the fifth book was also really depressing. Harry was hopeful about finally having family, and Sirius was such a great character. Bellatrix is such a heinous *****.
Oromis! I hate it when mentors die. Which reminds me, Yoda. Although his death seemed...okay. Because it was the right time. But Oromis didn't have to die if it wasn't for Murtagh, who is by the way so badass and awesome in comparison to Eragon that I can't hate him for it. What really made me cry was when Glaedr says that he is now all alone. I really got a sense of how strong their bond was, and how crippling it was to lose Oromis.

Come to think of it, all three (four...ish) deaths that depressed me most out of all the books I've read are all the deaths of mentors. People who dedicated so much time and effort to training and nurturing the protagonist, so that they could save the world or whatever. And then they have to go and DIE.

Piccolo's death brought tears to my eyes. He sacrificed himself to save Gohan and then told Gohan that he enjoyed the year he spent with him and how Gohan was the only one who treated him like a friend.

The death of Gandalf in the first Lord of the Rings..it was touching, but since he came back I guess that doesn't count so I would say Hopes Mom for FFXIII, because he keeps whining about her so much it is making me contemplate breaking my Xbox.

Dan Goddamn Abnett is an excellent writer, and the best of the 40k authors. He works tension the way that others use a keyboard, every stroke masterful, deliberate, meaningful and subtle in detail but when it becomes a whole, powerful.

And he made me tear up, the fucker. Titanicus, a book I recommend as an entry to Warhammer 40k Fiction. At the end one of the Red Coat troopers, Cally Samstag, comes home to find her husband was killed by the 'police'. It's truly hearbreaking. You've spent the whole story being set up to empathise with this character and how she hates her situation and wants to go home then bam.

It's interesting that you say that because one of the prerequisites to being a mentor figure in fiction is that they will, at some point, have to die. The old master has to go so the student can take their place and face their antagonist on even ground.

Anyway:

I was bawling when Sirius died in OoTP, mostly because I didn't see it coming, like I did with Dumbledore, so it hit me harder.

Not so much a death, but there's an episode in season two that's split into different sections and follows separate characters. The section with Iroh, where he sets up a small shrine to his son, who died in the war, hits me every time. Especially since the episode was in memory of Iroh's voice actor Mako, who had recently died.

Also:

Even though the entire third act was basically an Anyone Can Die-athon Fred's death pissed me off more than any of the others...and by pissed off I mean angry tears of sadface.

When Ned dies. And when Rob dies. And when Jon has to kill Qorin. And when it looks like Bran and Rickon are dead.(It's the thought that counts).....Yeah, that's all I got. Oh yeah, and then Catlyn dies, but then she's a zombie at the end of the book, and I still haven't found out how that works, so don't spoil it for me.
now only if George RR Martin can get off his butt and be done with dances with dragons (book 5) i know he's busy with the HBO version, but man, i've been patient, last time i was waiting this long was for stephen king's gunslinger series (and man that turned out dissapointing should ended with the first book) random trivia: George RR Martin wrote most of the episodes for the tv show beauty and the beast, not than many people would remember that show...

Wash suddenly from a spike to the chest
its been a while since i connected with a character in a a movie but firefly/serenity did it for me
thats why serenity was heart wrenching in that scene
My god that was so sad, he was my favourite character! But for me it would be the
Death of Elene from the Night Angel Trilogy. [/spoler]

And the ending of James Blish's book Cities in Flight, that is the only literature that has only ever truly made me cry.

The Malazan Book of the Fallen

Tool's death and enforced resurrection in Dust of Dreams. Got damn, being betrayed by your adopted people, watching your wife get mutilated and raped, your children flee to the man who you thought was your greatest friend, only for that man to deny you even a peaceful death and force you to go back.

Or the finale. All the characters we've been following for the entire damned series biting it to random techno-dinosaurs out of nowhere burns, man. Makes it worse that we've been constantly teased by the little hints that they're so much more than soldiers, and when it comes to it and we see them pull out all the stops, it still isn't enough. It was the most 'wait, what the fuck just happened' moment I've read.
