Well my fellow escapists I am asking you to name some of the saddest songs you know. The type that get you kind of teary eyed. My contribution is "Somewhere That's Green" in both its original version and especially its dark reprise.

Here let me give you my ipod. The saddest I can think of at the moment is Screaming Infidelities by Dashboard Confessional. EDIT: The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot by Brand New.

"Draw Me" by Sonata Arctica. The song practically oozes saddness.

"No Children" by The Mountain Goats
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRP6egIEABk

Also "Old College Try" by The Mountain Goats (#7 on Related videos above).

Starting with the Season 2 finale (Nature -- a two parter) Moral Orel is incredible if you like depressing stuff (though most of the rest is pretty dumb). I'd recommend Repression (some season 2 episode) to get a feel for Nurse Bendy (Alone won't be as good if you don't know who she is going in), then Nature and all of season 3. That's where I discovered The Mountain Goats.

I recognize that song from Spongebob! :D

That guy sure can sing, even if it is really ridiculous that kind of singing requires some talent.

The older songs are the best when it comes to 'sad' music. Most new songs tend to over-complicate things with sweeping orchestral scores and fancy audio tricks, when really all you need is a haunting melody (Like in Moonlight Sonata) or beautiful lyrics (Like in I Will Wait For You).

Vincent by Don Mclean. I wept the first time I heard it, you wouldn't think so but the story of Van Gogh is just tragic, his whole life noone saw things the way he did, his only companion in the world was a prostitute and he commited suicide. It's a very sad story but the thing that makes it tear-worthy is that despite the fact that his life was so terrible it didn't slow him down, he kept painting because he loved it, and he created some of the best masterpieces in the world and sparked the subjective art-style. Here's the song for everyone to listen to if you'd like

But the beauty of it all is that the story is somewhat reflective of the fantastic music of Don mclean, he truly is an artist with a six string pallete and the listeners as his canvas, through his alternative music he has laid tribute to those who saw the world differently and that is what helps this song become a thing of beautiful, tear-inducing sadness.

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd is one. In The Arms of The Angels by Sarah Mclaughlin is another. So is Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins.
