Casey Hudson of BioWare just tweeted this:

Happy to confirm #ME3 supports wider options for love interests incl. same-sex for m&f chars, reactive to how you interact w/them in-game.

Finally! I'm so happy with this news, needed to share it!

EDIT - some more tweets:

@CaseyDHudson Will there be less dialogue with characters just because you don't romance with them? That was a problem with ME2.
Reply: Casey Hudson
@there761 #ME3 writing team has some great ideas for breaking the mold on char. interactions, which should add to non romance relationship.

TheDdevil Benjamin Bell
@CaseyDHudson You also said that there is no new love interests in ME3. So suddenly Kaiden is back to being gay and other characters? Uh-oh.
Reply: Casey Hudson
@TheDdevil I'm confident that our writing team will handle LI's in #ME3 with sophistication and preserve character continuity.

I didn't even know that Mass Effect was purely heterosexual, although it is nice to see that it is expanding for a wider audience.
Although I feel like if the relationship dialogue is anywhere similar to Dragon Age 2's, homophobes are going to be all up in arms about it.

You know, I think Shepherd's had enough loving. Could we maybe skip the romance options altogether this time and focus all our hopes on it not being a let-down?

I think that's why he's put the "reactive" part in. The problem in DA2 was not so much that they were gay but that the gay characters jumped you for no reason and then got pissy when you told they you were only really into the opposite sex. I think he means that you'll need to initiate the romance yourself.

It's not. There's been female-female homosexual relationships, but not male-male.

Yes, though technically no because Asari are mono-gendered. (it would make BroShep's relationship with Liara a bit gay/bi as well ;))

I wonder who male Shep is going to be able to shack up with then. Having gone through ME2 without picking a relationship, this could be a viable option for me in the third game.

As if they'd take away Liara from my female Shep. I would LET the Reapers destroy Earth if BioWare did that. The question for me now is, who is going to be the gay male character? If it's one of the returning characters from the previous game, I'm going to be annoyed. Same reason I was annoyed when Anders suddenly became gay. I don't like it when characters are rewritten that way, especially if they were interested in Shep only when she was female. Tali being gay I can sort of accept because they hinted at it in Mass Effect 2, but that would be a stretch. Jack too, sense she admitted it, but still. Garrus, Kaiden, Thane, and Jacob? No.
Now, if a new character is gay, I have no problem with that. I did find it odd that no males were gay in Mass Effect 2 after playing Dragon Age Origins.

It will be good so long as they don't take the DA 2 route of 'fuck it, lets just make all of them bisexual.' Having a variety of choices is nice, diluting character significence and subsequently screwing up my immersion isn't.

Good point. I don't get why there couldn't have been a lesbian option with Miranda and/or Jack..

why is any-one even remotly happy or even interested in this? does it make such a massive difference to a game? speaking as a homosexual i dont give a flying-pig if a game got sex of any description in it or not. afterall i can turn to my partner for such needs and its by far better than watching a blank screen with some "sexual" noises in the back-ground, dont know about the rest of you but i played mass effect not for the sex but for the story, atmosphere and too see the effects of a hand-nuke on the face of a giant mutant corpse-robot.

I fully agree with you. I liked DA2, but that was a little ridiculous.

I am pretty sure that there will be no NEW relationships in ME3.
Edit: Here is the article that I read: http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/05/14/bioware-mass-effect-3-has-no-new-love-interests/
Well, I romanced Tali, so not really an issue for me

I'm a naturally cynical person, and Bioware strikes me at being disingenuous in two key areas. First that I highly doubt everyone got together for a brain-storming meeting and decided "Hey guys, same sex relationships in video games have been neglected for far too long. Let's have them in here now!" Instead, they're probably just trying to avoid the same fan outcry that the second game didn't have any same-sex relationships and hastily add them in here, the same way they cut the sex scenes in the second game when Fox News called the first a rape simulator (Ugh.) Not only that, but if the game is still in this level of build, I prophesy another push-back on the release date.

Can't it just be "everyone is bisexual but they don't bring it up?"

Just allow any gendered Shepard to romance any desired/romanceable characters and let the player determine sexualities for the team. I have straight, homosexual, lesbian and bi-curious Shepard's I've designed, why not give me a little control over the teams sexualities as well?

Clarification: I don't mean every character just openly stating they are bisexual, I mean characters simply responding to romantic interest positively (so long as they like you) without really needing to express a cut and dry sexuality. It doesn't really affect personality whether Jack/Jacob/Kaiden/Tali is into chicks or dudes so let the player decide!
