Samsung apparently doesn't see much humor in a Grand Theft Auto V mod that turns the recalled, hazardous Galaxy Note 7 into an in-game weapon. In fact, the company is trying to erase it from the internet completely. Samsung has issued a DMCA takedown targeting a YouTube video that showcased the mod, which gives the Note 7 explosive, grenade-like capabilities. It was a pretty great way of poking fun at Samsung's ongoing PR crisis ? and now the company is responding in a terrible way: ridiculous overreach and misuse of the DMCA tool.

The Note-as-bomb mod, created by HitmanNiko, is clearly a parody of a rather unfortunate real world situation. He didn't copy anything. But that didn't stop Samsung from filing a bogus copyright claim. As a result, the video that we originally linked to earlier this month has been pulled from YouTube, and there's little mystery about the party responsible.

It's unclear whether the original uploader has appealed Samsung's request. Thankfully, other videos featuring the mod remain available for viewing, such as the one embedded below. Instead of pursuing YouTube users, Samsung should probably point those resources to customers affected by the dangerous product that's now been ushered into technology disaster history.
So what do you guys think about this? personally to me it's funny seeing a company dig it's grave even more than it already has or the fact It doesn't know what the Streisand effect is.

I'm not sure DMCA'ing is the right path....

But...I can relate with the sentiment. The internet grabbed hold of this and is spreading misinformation like wildfire. The phones melt, sizzle and are one hell of a fire hazard, they do not explode. But thanks to the internet, 8/10 people will tell you they explode, spectacularly.

So I can see where a PR engine is coming from trying to squash the idea that their phones literally explode, parody or not.

He didn't copy anything.
Except he did. That is very clearly a Samsung phone in those videos, logo and all. Stuff to which Samsung owns the rights and which that modmaker copied without permission.

Plus, like Elijin pointed out, I can see why Samsung would want to fight the idea that their phones explode when they don't from spreading.

Is this a good use of their resources? Debatable, but I can understand why they do it and far as I know, they are within their rights to do it.

It is a clear parody though, and therefore Fair Use.

I thought it was the tv news that was spreading it.

They are on their rights of complaining. But this is like accusing the newspapers cartoon of copyright violation for drawing an exploding Samsung phone. Even worse, the video isn't even from the mod creator. This is another case of a company weaponizing Youtube's automatized DMCA system to avoid negative publicity.

Video restored. Samsung, you suck!
