Thats it, I can't take this anymore! Peolple against video games, either get your facts or shut up! I am so sick of hearing about the evil of VG! "Oh they cause violence amongst our children." Oh yeah sure. Let's see if I get this straight, a game meant to relive stress is a violent outburst of death. Would you rather have your kid kill people in the real world, or kill aliens and theifs in the virtual one. I play games to escape reality, because reality sucks. At least in a game I feel like I can do something to change my world. Games are not drugs. Reason I don't play games here is because its stuff we can do in real life. Farmville, if you want to farm, get a garden and plant. I love feeling like a hero, not a small person with no voice against the world. Games bring me into my world, one that I can make mine, whether I'm a multipowered hero, a mustached plumber, or a strange creature, I love breaking the walls of possibility. So don't drag me down, shut up, and get a 1-up. It's not the game thats the problem, its the player, and how they are willing to read a game. Is it fair that a person can read a book for hours, or watch a movie series for days, but when we play games for a couple of hours, we are as bad as crack addicts.

I'm assuming something specific set off this outrage of yours?

No offense, but an angry outburst isn't the best way to convince people that video games are an effective stress reliever. I know the point has been made before, but people said the same thing about rock music back in the 50s and 60s, and people have cooled down about that.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with your message. You just aren't delivering it in the most convincing way to the people who won't agree with you, who aren't likely to visit The Escapist anyways.

I play FIFA shitloads.

Should I stop playing FIFA and go out and play football instead?
No that defies the game haters theory of "what you happens in games you will do in real life", therefore if you play an assassin you will assassinate someone, if you play pro football you will become pro at football, if you arn't pro you ruin their theory!!

Did I fall into the time vortex again? Because I haven't seen a big anti-videogame movement since about 2002, and there hasn't been a really big one since the 1994 congressional hearings which lead to the ESRB. I have, however, noticed an annoying trend among gamers to flip out every time anyone says anything remotely critical of gaming. If you want to prove the critics wrong, overreacting is not the way to do it.

"Would you rather have your kid kill people in the real world, or kill aliens and theifs in the virtual one."

False dichotomy.
No reason you can't do both or neither.

it's not as much overreacting, as much as the complaints I and many of my friends recieve that we are playing video games. Of course I'm aware people get hooked on the MMO's and will be looking at the screen for days, but in a calmer mood, those of us that play games, shouldn't be told that we are addicted. I posted the thread when I was playing my 3ds outside of a small resturant when I was waiting for a ride. A couple of people came by and told me that I was hooked, and am not going to learn much from games. No matter how many times I tried to tell them why I play, they kept interupting me and my ride arrived. I shouldn't of spread my message out of hate, but that was my nearest emotion. I still believe that us that play games have a low rep with those that don't play games, and some of the MMO's and a few other games might be adding to that, but I think as long as we defend why we play, we can smile and keep reading our stories, through play.
