Sorry to gripe, but would people saying things are dead please stop saying that. It's headline seeking attention grabbing and really it's just cheap.
I first noticed this after Movie Bob's video stating that PC gaming is dead, then spending five minutes back tracking and explaining his (valid) point that consoles and PCs are adapting to new technology such as smart phones, tablets and laptops, and as a result different games are being produced. Now I maybe wrong but when does change=death? Just because casual gamers
have a new platform does not mean we are going to dump our xboxes into the ocean, the laptop did not force NASA to develop a rocket to fire all desktop PCs into the sun to relieve stress on landfills. You know why? Because new technology does not mean the death of old technology. I personally use 2 laptops, 1 desktop, an iPhone and an Xbox 360. I don't favour one over
the other, the xbox is great for playing action games, but terrible at RTS'. Iphone is great for sending and checking quick emails or going on gamefaqs, not so great at writing long emails to my parents. And so on, my point is that just because the technology is changing does not immediately usher in the death of the old technology.
Other examples I hear are:
Magazines are dead!
The use of smart phones means people can get their information on the move, so the printed on dead trees medium is dead.
NO! I just walked past a newstand and saw a whole wall dedicated to magazines and newspapers, and I bought a copy of SFX to
read at work.
TV is dead!
Streaming videos and sites like Netflicks means people can see their shows when and where they like, so TV is dead.
NO! As an experiment I turned on my TV and there were several TV programmes on AT THE SAME TIME. I then used a newspaper (see above) to check the TV listings are there appear to be plenty of channels and shows to choose from, some of them even new.
AAA title games are dead!
Casual games are taking over! Avaliable on facebook, iPhones AND PCs. Cheap and entertaining with huge profit margins, soon all games will be casual flash games bought off the applestore, and big games publishers will be a distant memory.
NO! I have bought Mortal Kombat and Portal 2 this week, AAA titles seem fine to me. Yes, casual games are popular they have a wide audience and they're cheap. However big name publishers are big name publishers for a reason; They make and fund big popular games. Sure,I could go on YouTube and watch some videos of cats doing stupid stuff but that doesn't mean I don't watch TV. Likewise you can play any number of tower defence games right now, but that won't stop me playing Mass Effect 3 when it comes out.
I had some other old timey ideas, like the printing press vs handwriting, but I think you get the idea.
