Here is one you guys may not be aware of, Clock Tower...this game, seriously if you are a fan of the survival horror (Yahtzee pay attention) this is from the super Famicom (You need to find the ROM of an english one to play it) but damn is it scary, Scissor man...and the theme he plays when he is one you...yeah I'll take on zombies, xenomorphs, or even freaking Pyramid head before him.

Star Wars: Dark Forces. Anoat Sewers level. Those goddamn dianogas scared me shitless when I was a kid:

That old childhood fear still grips me almost twenty years later. I always have to skip that level with cheat codes to this very day.

inb4 Amnesia. but seriously, I bought the new humble bundle despite my greatest efforts to NOT buy Amnesia. All just because the water level in the demo, it has scarred me for the rest of eternity.

I have it installed and every time I mouse over the desktop icon, my heart rate goes up drastically.

I tend to try to avoid scary games so really the scariest game (not a demo) I've actually played is Bioshock.

I actually find the water to not be scary. I understand how the AI works for those invisible monsters a little too well. Kinda ruins the scare factor a bit...

Amnesia.

I had never really played scary games until Amnesia, and holy fuck, was that scary. I still haven't beaten it yet.

SCP Containment Breach is also pretty scary.

The scariest game I have ever played was the original Aliens Vs Predator game for the PC, specifically the marine missions.

Yeah they are so small and you do not see them coming. Once your just walking around, looking in the shadows, then BAM facehugger on your face.

It used to be AVP2 by Monolith but now it's Penumbra: Black Plague. Absolutely terrifying. When the first infected came, I just fucking gapped it actually yelling at the screen.

I don't enjoy horror movies nor games. Scary bits and pieces and atmosphere can be implemented of course, but if the main point is just to be scary, then it fails to get my attention.

From what I've watched friends play: Amnesia. From personal experiences: some scary bits like headcrabs in Half-Life (and in that game, especially the point where you teleport the very first time into space during the test, and you're surrounded by those electrifying creatures), stuff from Quake 1 & 2, and the odd moments from games like CS:S where I'm sure the enemy is somewhere else and I'm focusing on sounds until someone surprises me from an unexpected corner.

This may sound weird but after thinking about it well there's really just 1 game that actually has scared me and it is the original TimeSplitters for the PS1, and I've played a lot of horror games, but returning to TS, well the horror level, which if memory serves me right looked like the house from Evil Dead, but anyway the ammo was really limited and the zombies only died of headshots, considering that my aim completely sucked it was really unnerving because those damned zombies killed me quickly but I had to get close to make sure I didn't miss the shot, really it's the only game that has actually scared me, and I didn't play it when it was new, I think I played it on 2005 or sometime around that.

Either silent hill 2...or minecraft.

I don't even need to say why silent hill 2 is scary, but minecraft? Minecraft is practically an excercise in how to do survival horror. You are not very good at combat. The best you can do is swing away with your sword, pressing the attack button like a madman, at least until you get the bow, and even then, you're hardly legolas. When the sun sets, the monsters come out, and that moment of panic when the light suddenly dips and you're far away from shelter is priceless. How many nights have I spent trapped in a tiny, oft windowless room without a bed, forced to sit there all night listening to the sounds of the monsters outside, wondering how on earth I'm going to get out safely in the morning?

What's more, this fear drives the gameplay. It drove me to create an enormous, three walled fortress, and whatever safe structures you make are all the more satisfying for knowing how dangerous the world outside is at night.

Of course, my arachnophobia does not help.

This. I had a crippling fear of that happening to me for years, they were the monsters under my bed, in the wardrobe, they were the creatures lurking in the dark, and they were fucking terrifying. I mean, what if they did it in your sleep? You wouldn't know until....

And now I won't sleep tonight, thanks guys.

The Justine dlc for Amnesia, I finished the main story of Amnesia without too much trouble, but Justine... permanent death makes it so much scarier.

YES! All this! That game made me afraid of water levels. Those damn dianogas were the worst and even with cheat codes I can hardly stand the level.

Honestly, Amnesia. Steam tells me I played for just under 2 hours. That was more than a year ago. I actually want to get back to it some time soon again, just haven't found the time.

Besides that though, Silent Hill 3. I know a lot of people say Silent Hill 2, but aside from Pyramid Head I'm not sure why. There were some very scary parts in 2 and the story was amazing, but it felt like they held back. Silent Hill 3 was old school Team Silent pulling out all of the stops to completely mess with your head.

It also had an amusement park haunted house in it. I'll let you all ponder on that for a moment.
