I don't know why but lately I have an desire for games that give me a dirty pants, so I ask the escapist: what are is your Scariest moments in gaming and why?

the most scariest moments for me were in penumbra Overture/Black Plague.
for example
in overture when you turn on the UV and see the entire room full of creepy texts
or
in black plague where you start hallucinating thanks to clarence and an infected chases you in an dark hall,
I love penumbra because you constantly think someone is watching and you can't fight back which adds much to the atmosphere of you, as an helpless person,

Edit: another scary penumbra part, when I encountered the first infected, I panicked and closed the door with a box in front of it. the infected started to bang on the door a few times and the he walked away, just a I thought I was safe the infected crashed through the door, damn that was scary and intense.

The dream sequences in Metro 2033. And when you go to the playpark in the same game.
Creepy stuff.

For me it had to be the very first level in FEAR. I was sh*****g bricks the whole time. Why was it so scary, it was because nothing happened at all. Nothing physically to you anyway. You were subjected to some flashback looking things, creepy men walking but there was no one there. All that crazy s**t. It scared the crap out of me even though nothing actually happened. It took me 3 times just to get past it.

The dentist splicer, the splicer moving wax statues.

EDIT: not really scary but the "breath deep the blue..." vault unnerved me to no end. Those messages on the terminals and you dads goshtly image running around. Just felt so out of place.

That and the dunwich building. Oh god the dunwich building where do i begin...

Just played Serious Sam HD yesterday. Remember those cyclop beasts that drop from the ceiling? They're kind of cute but they still make me scream like a little ***** like I'm 13 again.

There's the Mirror Room from Silent Hill 3 for me. The sheer oddity of what's going on is enough to make my heart stop, and the sound effects do not help. And of course, there's the screaming mannequin from the same game...

First time I played Fallout 3, I had no idea what the game was really about. I just saw it and thought oo that looks good!

So anyway, trekking through a dark, dingy subway tunnel. I hadn't figured out how to turn my Pip-Boy light on yet, so it was very dark. Suddenly a hear "GEEHHHH!!!!" and a bloody Ghoul leaps in front of me. I really wasn't expecting that and, not gonna lie, I jumped.

Also Resident Evil has had its fair share. First time I played 4 was round a mate's house at a sleepover, so it was dark outside. We hyped it up by switching all the lights off and kind of overreacting.

As my experience with actual horror games is limited to synopses and walkthroughs (enourmous coward right here), the scariest gaming moment I've ever experienced is a tie between the Ravenholm level in Half-Life 2 and the City 17 Underground in Half-Life 2: Episode One. Both of them are absolutely filled with Headcrabs that jump out of nowhere, those unspeakably horrible Headcrab Zombies ("Oh god help me! Why?! Why?!"), and of course those fast zombies that scream bloody murder as they leap across buildings to claw at my face. The latter is probably worse however, considering almost the entire thing is in total darkness and the flashlight lasts about thirty seconds.

For both levels it's actually very difficult to actually die, but the terror more than compensates.

I have never really played any horror games to be honest. Asides from the Ravenholm thing, but that doesn't really count.
Because of that, I've never really been more than slightly unnerved. A couple of times, on a really difficult section of certain games, I've been worried for the survival of my characters, for example, attempting to get the Kamikaze trophy in Heavy Rain. That took so freaking long, it was freaking infuriating. Does that count? Probably not.

Mine would be the museum part in Silent Hill 3.

Playing it for the first time at night probably wasn't a very well thought out plan. One of the first times I jumped and yelled.

Good times.

Not much experience with horror games, but that part with the morgue in Arkham Asylum definitely got under my skin.

I can't really think of one, but some that stick out:

Any part of Fatal Frame 3 where you had to crawl under the floorboards was some claustrophobic hell.

Ocean Hotel level

In Silent Hill 3 when you're in the haunted house and realize that the hanging man wasn't part of the show.

Yeah, that part.
